I'm with Deb and Roz (and Ken).
He did mess with the votes... but only for a little while. Nothing illegal about that.
IMHO, he did nothing wrong. He only pillaged the village for a bit... no raping or burning occurred. :)
How is it a problem to vote one way and then correct the votes to "valid" ones before the voting ends?
I don't understand that problem.
He came.
He voted.
I hope he doesn't leave.
Put on your big girl panties, folks! Let's have fun!

It would have been more interesting if it went up and down and up and down. This one was rather boring.
Bouncing scores are much more interesting than plummeting ones.
Though I'm still waiting for him to raise my score back up on DOF. Obviously my 5.5 isn't real. ;P

Yup. The ribbon hogs and their little band of "friends" and the constant whining about their precious scores does get old fast. WHY NOT MOVE THIS THREAD TO TINIEST VIOLIN? Hm?

Yup. The ribbon w****s and their little band of "friends" and the constant whining about their precious scores does get old fast. WHY NOT MOVE THIS THREAD TO TINIEST VIOLIN? Hm? |
Hey guys! I'm so very sorry that I started this thread. It was all to help people who were feeling bad about their scores to realize that it probably was just somebody playing around and not a big deal. I know one person who is a past member who was thinking about coming back but has such imposter syndrome that they're afraid of watching the scores. I've been through that myself so many times. So I had that in mind when starting the thread. It was a: hey, Don't take this one too seriously, thought.
And while we are used to lowball scores, and while the ones will never really resonate with anyone, I think it's posts like this that really really hurt this site. Being able to talk about scores or even complain about scores has been a part of this since I started. We would celebrate with people whose scores were doing well, and commiserate with each other when our scores were going down. It helped us get through the process, and helped us get to know each other, as well.
But I do not think that calling people sacred cows or w****s is at all appropriate. I have no idea if I have friends on this site that recognize my photos and say oh it's Wendy. I have to give her a high score. I know for a fact that I have people on this site who know it's a Wendy photo and have in the past given me ones and twos. And that's between them and the SC.
I certainly can recognize the number of people's photos. Who they are does not affect my voting. They would not want it to affect my voting. They are not here for their friends to give them high scores. They're here to see how their photographs do. As am I.
I am reporting this post to the SC. And I would prefer never to be called a w**** again. Thank you.
Edited to add:
Why when people are frustrated do they need to bring someone else down with them? Has anyone thought that the reason the ribbon hogs might be ribbon hogs is because they enter soooo many challenges? I've entered over 1780 challenges. I was trying to figure out what to enter for tonight's challenge. I try to keep entering and to keep posting, because I love this site that has done so much for me. But cheer up -- I've lost interest in tonight's challenge. It's all yours.

Thank you Wendy, you said it very well. In fact what most closely resembled whining in this thread were the posts about "sacred cows" and "ribbon whores" |

I often do. I recognize your daughter, husband and cat, and often your editing style. I don't think it influences my votes. |

Heck, by now I'm a Wendy Expert, a LevT Connoisseur, a Mark Wiley Wannabe-with-a-drone, a Roz Recognizer, a Tibi Familiar, an Ammie Amigo, a Maryane Marveler, and on and on. If anything, I'm harder on them than I am on the unrecognized (by me), but not a lot. They're all very good. I'm not sure why anybody worries about this stuff... |

Seems to me that he did not abuse the voting system. When rollover happened, he had voted appropriate votes.
Many people put in a "placeholder" and then go back and adjust near the end of voting.
I don't see this as abusing the system.
Does the SC think that putting in a vote and then changing it before rollover is abusive?

I mentioned the "placeholder" method early in this discussion -- that's not a problem.
This particular situation was not that. |

Wow, imagine my surprise when I am about to enter a challenge for the first time in a long time...
Not even a warning and no reason stated?? Ok.
[insert my NJ-esque rant about no wonder you are losing members, bla bla bla]
To be clear, I am mostly annoyed at the lack of communication before investing the 12 minutes shooting and editing for the challenge. I'll get over it. ;-) |

There SHOULD have been a message emailed to you about the suspension, it's (supposedly) automatic. Sorry about that :-( |

I'm surprised that Site Council chose THIS hill to die on with Ken.
At rollover, he had voted fairly and accurately.
Yet, he was suspended... HE... who is known as the Court Jester of DPC.
In fact, SC had an entire challenge honoring him:
In the Style of : Art Roflmao
And THIS is what you get rid of him for?
...a practical joke that did not have any effect on the scoring of a challenge?
I'm disappointed.
I kinda wish that I hadn't just renewed my membership before I had this knowledge.
Ken has been a HUGE supporter of, and encouragement to, DPC for many years... providing many laughs for many people.
I still say he committed no crime... maybe he should have been asked to not do that kind of thing again, but he came back to enter... paid to enter... and now is suspended.
I am not amused.
I realize that probably no one cares whether I am amused, and that's okay. Totally okay.
I just thought I'd make myself clear on my thoughts of the suspension.

Please don't make a mountain out of a molehill ...
He DID abuse the voting system in that he assigned votes for neither a fair evaluation nor to sort into groups for later refinement, but rather for the express purpose of "baiting" other members into reacting, with the predictable amount of emotional distress and disappointment.
He acknowledges it was wrong and has (sorta) apologized (mea culpa translates roughly from Latin as "my fault"), and has received what I hope would be seen as appropriate temporary restriction from some site activities -- same as we would for anyone else who behaved similarly.
Surely you don't want the SC to start playing favorites and enforcing the rules based on personal relationships ... |

Thank you.
Truly he forced you (SC) into having to enforce a rule specifically. Anyone who has been here for a little while understands that.....and Ken as well as anyone.
Yah, Ken/Art will be who he is......and the Ken I've known has pushed boundaries before. He knows.....

So lemme get this straight. Ken trolled everyone in a recent challenge or two, handing out low scores just for funsies?
If I'm wrong, please correct me.
And if that is what he was doing - then why wasn't the vote scrubber working?! Isn't that its purpose, to detect and remove artificially low scores, especially those cast by one member? Does the vote scrubber even exist?!
I guess the answer doesn't really matter. I entered the Museum challenge with a strong entry and thanks to Ken being bored and choosing to have fun baiting members...well...that's exactly why I left two years ago.
People are allowed to get away with crap like this during voting.
Safe to say that I am not going to be entering any more challenges.

Actually, that's not what happened. A thread began bemoaning low scores (nothing new there) and when Ken saw it he decided to prank us and handed out all 1's on two challenges in voting and all 10's on a third one. We saw it happening and contacted him. He went back to those challenges and revoted rationally, then posted to this thread accepting responsibility for his prank. We slapped him with a suspension from voting or entering for 2 weeks. End of story.
It was either funny or obnoxious depending on how you feel about Ken's shenanigans, but he did apologize and he has paid a price. |

The vote-scrubber only takes effect at rollover when the votes are tallied -- it does not keep track of votes at they are being made.
The ploy was uncovered, the "erroneous" votes rectified, and the perpetrator punished within the existing disciplinary system, not "allowed to get away with it".
Again, IMO, mountain molehill ... |

Really? Then why do I still have a 2 on my Museums entry? Are you going to tell me he didn't go a-trolling in Museums, too?
Again, doesn't really matter if I got trolled by Ken or not. I've had enough.

I can tell you for 100% certainty that Ken did not vote on the Museums challenge.
The reason you have a 2 on your entry is that someone didn't like it, for one reason or another.
My gut feeling is that someone didn't like any war type imagery. I looked and your entry, ryans entry (10th place), and mine (2nd place), all had a vote of 2 on them. No other lower votes cast really, from 1st place thru 16th place.
For transparency, I'm posting the vote graph from your entry (visible to any member after voting) - my vote in red (I liked it and gave it a 7).
Quit entering if you must. Hope you don't, but that's your choice. However, please don't look for some other conspiracy that isn't out there. Votes happen. The voting scale is from 1 to 10. It's going to get used ... |

A 2? That's actually quite generous. If the member I'm thinking of, they usually give a 1 for anything with a gun or similar in the image. Only because there isn't a zero in the scale. Just expect it for any entry like that. |

That's all fine and dandy if this member is anti-war, but how I am supposed to know that? SMFH...
I've not participated here in the site for TWO.YEARS.
Also I never said anything about a conspiracy. But to get trolled due just to a voter not liking the subject matter is ridiculous.
I don't care much for insect macros, so if I voted viscerally that means I should be giving those pics 1s and 2s, right?
Well guess what. I don't. I vote fairly. My voting on all images starts at 5 and goes up or down from there.
And when I do see images like insect macros, I overlook my feelings on the subject matter and give a score based on matters, like detail, composition and so forth.
I am just very, very disappointed and saddened that the same mentality of entering only safe, palatable images that are as threatening as baby food is required to ribbon here. So, y'know, people don't get offended.
