Great colors and an interesting silhouette.
Green and orange and a scene right out of a fantasy movie.
A very professional-looking commercial shot that just screams calendar.
Such a quaint timeless scene that easily looks like something from a calendar, card, or christmas catalog. |

I am stunned this finished way down #152
I can imagine many calendars having this, and it's a wonderful shot. (I gave it a 9!). While many above it are very nice too, they don't appear as calendarish as this one. Congrat's Paul on that one!
I also thought this would be in the top 10 ( Scalvert's), though it still finished a respectable 34th place. It's very striking in it's natural colors--something I also very strongly associate with calendars.
I think both of these shots would bring a painterly beauty to any Calendar they were published on. Something I'd be happy to hang on my wall compared to competing calendars. Congrats to both of you. (And to the ribbon winners--excellent shots as well.

Not a coward, I hope you rethink that comment after you read my defense:
I was referring to an imaginary country which divides itself sharply between red and blue...I referred to this imaginary country as the D.S.A. because every comment from the citizens of this imaginary country attacks 'the other side'.
I love the U.S.A. a lot! You have every reason to be proud to be an American, United with others in your country...It just bothers me when people try and divide the U.S.A. along imaginary lines.
Sorry for my unclarity.

Ignorance is not confined to Canada. The average level of education and access to unbiased information via the media, public institutions is considered relatively high internationally.
While we have many things in common with Americans, there are some differences which have become more visible during recent history. A 'proud American', i.e. and today, is likely to be considered a patriot. Many Canadians, however, pride themselves as being concerned global citizens.

Well, I certainly in no way meant to start a my country is better than your country. And in my defense, I was not referring to Canada at all as being ignorant. Instead, only to one individual as an ignorant whatever.
I don't poke my nose into other countrys' affairs and I don't know why *SOME* people from other countries feels they have the right to poke theirs into ours. That's all.
Sorry if I mistook your original post, but we Americans have been under a lot of this 'global attack' stuff lately. While I don't necessarily agree with everything America does, I will still stand behind it 100%. Maybe I'll disagree publicly with some close friends, but that's what the freedom of speech is all about.

Thanks! I knew I'd take a hit for running an "artistic" filter on this (I used a light application of Dry Pastels) on it, but it already had somewhat of that look from the limited DOF and the shape of the flowers, and I wanted to reinforce the look. I've seen a lot of calendars with paintings of flowers.
With the Impressionism challenge running in parallel I thought the technique might be suitable for this subject, and wanted to "get in on the action."

No problem...I can understand that it must be frustrating to be in that situation. It's easy to pick on the 'big guy'...
I hope that whatever is dividing you guys stops and that the media learns to quit feeding those differences. There aren't two types of Americans...realising that will make a world of difference to your (plural) situation...

Surely the event of over-riding importance for the month of November (at least so far) was the election.
There are calendars of pets, flowers police officers, trucks, planes, firefighters ... why not politicians? |

Usually is not always. Doesn't sound like you'd care for the Sumo Wrestlers calendar, but I suspect opinions are different in Japan. I've seen many other "off-beat" themes as well ... check out this ad:
THE 1994 TELEGRAPH AVENUE STREET CALENDAR by B.N. Duncan & Ace Backwords is now available for $10 postpaid from: Ace Backwords, 1630 University Ave. #26, Berkeley, CA. 94703. This year's version features Berkeley's Naked Guy (as well as other naked Naked Guy supporters!) along with the (un)usual cast of street characters. If you're going to buy a calendar, this is about the best there is.
Calendars could have a photojournalistic theme too -- e.g. top news stories of 2004 -- and as P-J this is a far above-average shot. |

As PJ I think the shot is on the low side of average. Way to common and not interestingly enough to put on a calender if you were to make a PJ or political calender imho.
I don't think it is worth a one, I don't care about US politicians and I don't even have a calender anymore. :)

Aargh, I'm sorry I brought it up. I just thought that since this was the underrated calendar shots, that if that was in a free study, it'd have a much higher rating than a 4.151. I'd fully expect this to be in a GOP calendar, or even a Presidential or Campaign Synopsis Calendar. It's something I'd rather look at than some of the shots that ranked above it. But I'm sorry for inciting the political beast, I didn't consider the reprocussions. I apologize, I'll never do it again.

You haven't -- we are strictly discussing the photographic plusses and minuses of this photo, without regard for our opinion of the persons or events depicted.
However, you're welcome to join the debate on the use of an "artistic" filter on my entry instead ... no politics there : )
