I'm in the mood to try something edgy and conceptual. My problems are I have no imagination or creative juices and I hate people so have no one to take photos of. Any suggestions?
Additionally, if anyone has some new style suggestions or have recently been exploring a new style post it here! Inspiration and learning new things is always good. |

What if you did some conceptual work with placing the chimps in your photos in urban settings? Find a pose in one of your shots and put the chimp into a mall, or car, or fast food place, or watching TV or stuff.
Could be fun.

abstract - focusing on color & texture - further expanded by only using things occuring in nature.

I wasnt really thinking of digital art type stuff. I do that now for fun. Also chimps in 'human' settings is a little cliche and sounds like a bad 50's thing where people actually forced chimps to perform tricks like that to entertain people. |

How about doind buildings or architecture in your area. Or a photographic record of your home town?
Maybe a record of playground life?
Visit your local school and do classroom photos, could give an informal chat to some of the classes on photography at the same time. |

You sound like me. ;-)
While I can relate to Jacko's suggestion, I don't feel you'd have to get drunk. I'd much prefer a sober shot to an inebriated one.
On a more serious note, I'd suggest changing everything: lenses (use a normal, fixed lens), locale, attitude, time of day, composition (above all, composition!). Do not go out to with any preconceived ideas, not even with the idea to take an x number of photos in a given time.
Instead, concentrate on or consider, if you like, carefully all the more or less static thing(s) you encounter, from all sides. Walk around them as a sculptor would. Let your ad hoc subjects dictate every photographic decision, from approach via the 'click' of the shutter to final editing. Let something come over you.
With moving or highly changeable subjects and scenes, I would suggest the same attitude with a different but consistent shutter speed of above 1/1000, depending on light and your reading of it. With this exercise, shoot as much as you can as quickly as possible, but allow yourself no more than a single shot of the same subject or scene. Try to use your camera physically, too (perspective, camera motion and orientation, rotation, that sort of thing). Here your semi-conscious aim should be to discover a story you do not yet know.

I'm already the mistress of overexposure! underexposure too, which is far more seedy. |

What are your interests outside of photography?
My creative juices really start to flow when I photograph things I'm passionate about. |

| Try white. Find a setting, place or set up something that has white as the predominant color, loads of texture and one item that has lots of details but is black. See how much detail you can capture in both the black and white. |

My interests are subjects I already photograph - wildlife and nature. It has been deemed that such subjects are far too boring. Hence the desire to try something edgy with impact. Street photography is out since I dislike people and I live in a small town in Kansas were our streets are dirt roads and no one walks on them. Most of the edgy stuff I see involve people, conflict, or very New York urban-like settings - the very things I do not have. |

Who has deemed it boring? Are you sure you're not actually quite happy with what you've been doing already? Has someone else told you you need to be more edgy?
Can you make wildlife/nature shots more edgy? I'm sure there's plenty of drama to be found in the animal world, especially by someone of your talents! |

Check out my movement based abstracts... there are others who do this on the web (better), but it's fun, and different. Works best with colorful subjects, 1/8 of a second to 1 second exposure, and try different camera movements. |

Try night shots of "unsavory" subjects (you said "edgy") like alleyways, truck stops, no-tell-motels, refineries et al. Since you hate people, you won't be taking a friend. But to be safe, consider packing an AK-47. |

Jump on a plane, come to toronto and I'll take you around town. I need a driver for my night shot challenge.

| I think edgy is hard to do without the human element unless you are going edgy-abstract. I would suggest utilizing the fact that you hate people. Take some people photos that express that opinion. |

It's not really a hate hate thing. I'm a very shy person and for one reason or another most people ignored me so I ignored them. Nowadays I keep mostly to myself and dont bother people, which makes photographing them fairly difficult. I also get extremely paranoid taking candids in the street or at events fearing they are going to come over and beat me up. Because of this fear I rush my shots and have no feel for composition nor do I get close enough. I've tried all types of things to overcome my fear of people but it just produces very poor photographs and in the end frustrates me to no end. We also dont have crowds of people here, in fact, you could go days without seeing another living person here.
Just thought I should clear that up in case people were thinking I was secretly plotting the destruction of mankind :P |

| Why not try and make a photo session of something! like for example metro fotos, or transportation fotos, grossrie store! just stick to one theme and take as many fotos as you can. like if you do underground(metro) stuff take pictures of people leaving the trains, to the ticket booth, to the trains! just tring to be helpful! |

Knowing what part of the country moody is in, methinks public transit is out. :)
What about farm equipment? Should be in large supply in that area. You could do an industrial type series?

I can relate.
Here's an idea: First, come up with "edgy" ideas or themes - fear, hate, alone, pain, shy ;). Now pick some inanimate objects which have no direct relationship to those themes. Then try to convey the ideas using the subjects, through composition, POV, lighting, color (or lack thereof), etc.
Somebody said something earlier in this thread that reminded me of the shot I did for the All Alone challenge: Alone in a Crowd. I got the general concept for this late during the challenge, so had to quickly come up with props that weren't quite what I had in mind, and didn't execute very well. But I was pleasantly surprised that I seemed to have managed to do an OK job of conveying a sense of menace and fear based on some of the comments (such as "I've never seen marbles look so threatening").
Anyway, one possibility might be to create a series using the same or similar props; another might be to take a theme and make a series using different props. |

| Your profile bio says, "I started photography in January 2003. I enjoy it a great deal. Hopefully one day I'll be good at it." With 7 ribbons, I'd say you've gotten good at it! Congratulations on your great work ! |
