At the risk of starting another firestorm, I'd like to make a suggestion for a new type of challenge: A tournament where the first round is a member's open challenge and the top 1/2 (or whatever fraction is decided upon) of the finishers earn the right to submit to the next challenge round, which could have a theme or be another open challenge, and then the top 1/2 there move on and so on, until the final round.

This would let the cream rise to the top, but EVERYONE would get a chance to participate, at least in the 1st round.

Well, that is very interesting idea. Do you think that specific theme should be given or "free study" will do it?

NO - a per round theme

Per round ? That would be great!! And make it harder from round to round.

I had thought the 1st round would be "free study" then different themes for each of the succeeding rounds, but that was just the way I thought about it first.

a free study that way no one can use the excuse they weren't inspired by the subject of the challenge or complain once eliminated about wanting to participate in a challenge.

don't be so pessimistic...

I like the idea. Maybe begin one each month and then at the end of the year have the Tournament of Tournaments with the top 20% of each monthly final round competing against each other in the same pattern.

i'm not i'm being a realist...been around here long enough to know the real truth of what will happen...and if it isn't someone not being inspired it will be someone not understanding that challenge theme thats being realistic about it.

Well.. then we may as well just do away with challenge themes altogether then shouldn't we.. because Pete forbid a few people don't get it and feel left out.

there are always pessimists, and anti-this'rs
you have to ignore them, and go with the gut...

I really like this idea. I think starting with a free study for round 1. Then a theme with some difficulty for round 2. Something difficult for the 3rd roundâ€Â¦. like a technical challenge with theme and a limited time frame for a little added pressure......kinda a make or break situation.

Tremendous idea! I would love to see this in effect.
