Wanted to let you guys know that Dallas just had his first release surgery on Thursday. They did 4 different Z-Plasty's on him. One under his armpit, one on his inner elbow, one across his chest, and one on his neck. He went in Thursday morning at 6 am for surgery and was released by 4pm that day! So far, he's only had 2 doses of Tylenol for pain! That's it!!! I swear, this boy amazes me more and more! I stub my toe and want something stronger than Tylenol. lol.
Anyways, we had to go back to Winston Salem today (a four hour drive for us) because some of the stitches on his chest popped open and he had an open wound about an inch long. So they glued it up, looked him over, and we came back home. Made for a VERY long and expensive day! But, all is well with him so far. They have even given us the go-ahead for him to start school on Friday! I'm so nervous!!!
If you want to check out the updates and pictures of him, you can here: Dallas

Dallas' stitches popped open again this morning. So we had to try and close it up with a butterfly enclosure and some steri-strips. Hopefully it'll stay closed this time.
We go back on the 14th for his follow up.
I'm nervous about him starting school Friday, especially with having over 100 stitches. Hopefully his wounds will be mostly healed by this Friday!

We go back to Winston Salem tomorrow to do a follow up with the doctor.
Dallas stil has an open wound on his chest, which is now infected. sigh.
There are a few other areas that are infected as well.
I tried to tell them the last time that this was something I was concerned with. Dallas is so much more prone to infections now that his immune system isn't what it used to be. But it seems like they just dont care. Perhaps they expect things like this to happen and it's just a little bump in the road, but to me, it's more than that. If they would just tell me "hey, these areas are likely to get infected" I wouldn't worry AS MUCH about them. But they don't!
Sometimes doctors frustrate me so much. I just have to remind myself that they have done so much for him already and they know what they are doing... even if I think otherwise.
Hopefully tomorrow we will have good news. I'm sure we will.

I'm sorry to hear that there are always these setbacks to take the shine off the progress. I hope he gets on top of the infections quickly. Does this mean he'll have to delay starting school? I bet that brings some disappointment as well. It's a long road for sure, but he has been advancing along it amazingly well. All the best for this stretch!

Doctors don't heal!!!
Have you tried 'melaleuca honey' it's natural and apparently does wonders to heal infected wounds. I'm so sorry about what you are going through it must be so painful for Dallas and yourself and your family. |

Disclaimer: I obviously don't know the specifics; just thinking out loud here.
Could it be possible that the doctors are giving him minimal antibiotics so that he doesn't develop a resistance to the antibiotics? Or perhaps he's already developing a small resistance due to multiple surgeries? If so, perhaps that could be a reason for the infections. It might be worth asking... I'd imagine that this type of infection is fairly common given his situation. Maybe so common to the doctors that they don't even think to mention it?
I know part of the frustration in dealing with situations is that often times it's difficult for us common folk not in the medical field to know what we should be asking. It's frustrating, but I'd be careful putting too much blame on the doctor. They may be skilled surgeons but terrible communicators. I'd suggest staying calm (which I'm sure you are), and keep politely asking questions (which I'm sure you are). You do, after all, have a right to answers. |
