I guess that with pbase moving to becoming a pay site some peeps will be looking for alternatives. This is a very up to date list of alternatives, some free, some not. Most seem to be affiliated with printing services, and none are as good as pbase IMO, but you gets what you pays for.

OK, that brings up a good question. What do you want in an online personal gallery? What features would you consider critical?

Critical = C
Non-Crit = N

Sub Galleries C
Private Galleries C
EXIF reader N
Unlimited Filesize N (but would be very useful, bandwidth permitting)
Multiple Simeltanious(sp?) Uploads C

control of style sheets ala pbase?

01/15/2003 02:42:46 PM · #5
Sub Galleries
Private Galleries
black background or the ability to change the background color
01/15/2003 02:45:51 PM · #6
1. Background color control
2. Image Title field
3. Image comment field
4. Space for viewer comments
5. sub folders
6. Viewable by anyone from anywhere (normal link / not deep link)
7. Space usage stats (if there are limitations on storage)
8. Search by photographer/camera model/image category

I don't care much for exif extraction. I can't imagine that I would ever post an original image to the site.

PBase has it setup very nicely :)

Create public and private gallery
Unlimited Storage (don't mind paying for extra fee)
Create folders/subfolders
Counters
Comments
Co-branding (integration if we have our own website)
Photo Printing

Pbase pretty much does everything I need - no pop-up advertising or crap like that, easy sharing, direct linking, I like the EXIF extraction and happily pay $23 a year for 100Mb of web storage.

How in-depth would you like us to get on private galleries? Whether they be password protected, or you select the users that you want to be able to see it, or what?

being able to select users would be cool :)

I'm rubbish at thinking up good passwords

Either way for me, Langdon.

Make it invisible like on pbase...

pbase is pretty much feature complete for my needs, so as much of that as you could implement : )

Again, pretty happy with the pbase way of doing things - invisible, but anyone with the URL can view.

I like the fact that when I process my photos with Thumbs Plus, that the exif info is saved. It is not nearly as complex as PhotoShop, but it is nice to see that with some shots I look at to help me understand how the photo was built. This, I still like pbase, and like others gladly contribute $23 to have my photos stored.

I'm bumping this to see if anyone else has any opinions about what features they need in a personal online gallery...

Pretty much the same as what John said for me.

The ability to copy/move images from one folder to another would be nice as well :)

Built in print options would be nice so that we could optionally have uploaded a printable resolution version and have a print payment interface.

I'd also like a slideshow feature for everything in a gallery - either something fancy or just forced update htmls.

Maybe 'auto framing' styles - not sure how to do that on pbase, but something that would put an auto-drop shadow on everything or border etc. I can do simple stuff on pbase but not much more than that.

Easier re-ordering - pbase is a bit of a pain to re-order on - some way of 'auto numbering' for ordering would be good.

One place that I have found that produces the best quality prints from digital images is believe it or not... walmart.com. I used to always order from ofoto or image station but walmart does a much better job. Free shipping too if you have your prints shipped to your local walmart store. 4x6 prints are just $0.26 each.

Maybe someone can help me out with this one. I am interested in ordering prints from somewhere that offers matte finish prints. Anyone know of a quality online site that offers this service?

Thanks!
Bill

www.ezprints.com are pretty good - they are also the printing backend for daprints.com, the not so deviant really output end of deviantart.com.

EZprints prices are okay and the quality of prints I've had from them is very good, the do gloss and matte prints too. So far they are the only on-line place that hasn't screwed up prints (unlike ofoto, dotphoto and others)

Thanks Gordon! Very helpful! I'll try EZprints.

Thanks again!

My local WalMart does prints in-store in glossy or matte with or without borders, all for the same price - maybe yours does too!!!

I'll second the walmart.com recomendation. They're really good for me because when my family sees a picture they like they can print and pick it up at the walmart. I tried a 20x30 print from ofoto. It turned out bad but that was because I had no idea about dpi and other weird printing stuff. I'm still learning obviously:)

Just want to add you can only store your photos for one month unless you pay.
