By your same analysis, members of the military shouldn't be taxed either, they spend so much of their lives training, they represent our country AND, even more seriously than people running in circles or jumping in the pool, lots of people are trying to kill them...
Originally posted by PGerst: They are taxed on the prize money, not the medal.
I'm assuming that was already stated in other posts (didn't read them).
Personally, I think it is crooked to tax the Olympic athletes on what they win at the games representing our country. They spend so much of their lives training, then win representing our country, and then the Guberment takes it away. Yes, they get endorsements, tax them on that. But, not what they win from the Games.
There are so few people in the US (relative to the population) who get a medal every 2 years that the bottom line to the US can't be anything to justify such a rude take-back. In a sense, the Guberment is getting tax money all throughout the athlete's training as they pay for the training received.
Its a shame.
Originally posted by jusjoshing: Just found out about this, but did anyone know that american athletes who win a medal have to pay the IRS? Each olympic athlete wins a prize of 25k for gold and less for silver and less for bronze. But when they come home they have to pay 35% tax on their winnings. Michael Phelps has already paid 150some thousand in taxes on his medals. So rediculous. Meanwhile in most other countries, their returning athletes wont pay taxes on their winning a medal and representing their country. Total crap. | |

The jumping ought to be fun, a very technical and tricky, but not dangerous, course for the horses. |

Well, you know, if the rider falls off...who cares?! Just as long as the horse is safe! ;-D
But, Colbert makes Dressage far more entertaining...Poor Jan! |

Holy moly... that raises the question of what they do with that gear after the Games are over. Steep discounts to the lucky public?! I cross my fingers. |

What is the purpose of the room? Is it available for professionals to rent so they don't need to bring a lot of gear?

Dressage, what a stupid sport.
I have a problem with any sport where someone has to tell me who wins; gymnastics, diving, boxing, trampolining, .....
So many controversies have arisen from scoring and judging mishaps/bias that they should simply eliminate all sports which involve them as the sole determining factor for their outcome. I know you have to be athletic to compete at all those events listed, but it drives me nuts that judges have the power to exercise their bias in scoring. If it's not easily measurable, it shouldn't be in the Olympics. The motto is Citius, Altius, Fortius; we should stick to sports which push those limits.
The other thing which drives me nuts is race walking and all the swimming events. There should only be one stroke for each distance, the fastest one. You know who added breaststroke to the Olympics, the guy who couldn't compete at the faster strokes. It'd be like seeing who can run the fastest backwards, sideways, stutterstepping, it's ridiculous.
edit - I was adding links but there's so many of them it's pointless. Anyone who follows sports, specifically the Olympics like I do, knows all these already.

If you subscribe to pro level service, basically an annual fee club pros use, you can swap out your covered lens with a loaner while yours gets fixed. Clearly Canon wants to be sure they don't run short.

PS, anyone watching the amazing blocking demonstration in the Men's Volleyball USA v Russia. A greatly superior Russian team just seems out of synch, but both sides are putting up amazing 3 man roofs.
Edit. Russia put the hammer down in the third set after being down sets 0-2 and dominated the weaker American side to pull it out 3-2. Awesome game.

In the US Canon Professional Service is a 3 tier service, silver is free, gold is $100 a year, platinum is $500 a year. You don't get the service loan backup at silver, you have to pony up for gold or platinum for that, plus when you pay you get a "Equipment Evaluation Loan" and I expect a few of those D1 Xs are out for "evaluation". |

Yes, I did see her ride. I'm not a burly rugby player, but I'll share my kleenex box with you...;-)
Here she is breaking the world record with an unheard of score at 88.02%.

Watched the live feed of track and field and thoroughly enjoyed the Brit commentators versus the NBC drivel. Great to see some wonderful finishes from folks with Eugene connections.
*SPOILER*. For those watching delay.
Galen Rupp in the 10,000 meters...Brianne Theisen for the Canadians in the heptathlon. Excited to see Aston Eaton in the decathlon.

I'll second that. At work, I usually have the streams going in the background while I'm working, its quite exciting to hear. Still, its even nicer at times to hear the streams without any commentating at all. This way, I can hear all the other things going on...almost like I was there.
NBC prime time coverage is ok....but I love the individual event streams...pick and choose. I've watch sailing, archery, kayaking, etc.
Well...was out all day today...about to watch Phelps' last swim.....
ETA: ...and that's it for him.

Does anyone else think it is very odd that there was only 2 Royals there, Harry and Kate. No Prime Minister or any of the Cabinet, none of the Queens children where there. She was meant to show up, and all the speeches addressed her as though she was there! |

I think you have to cut the Queen a break...she is still recovering from the jump 17 days ago. She is over 80.

I have got a bit paranoid about her not being there. Princess Anne was not even there and her daughter is in the GB Team. |
