... and I too share this view, but when one considers that the latest estimate of the total cost of the Olympics for the Brits will be a staggering $38.5 billion, perhaps we ought to consider downgrading it a tad.

I agree with Ray. Particularly as we are in a recession and have the most class divisive, vindictive and destructive government in memory who seem intent on pushing ideology over sense and punishing the most vulnerable and less well off in society for the mistakes of the rich. I didn't watch the opening cermony but some of it sounded good. The celebration of the NHS for example, must have made some squirm seeing as the government are in the process of pretty much destroying it.
Still, at the heart of it, it's about the sport and for those that like sport it should be an exciting time. Literally everything else about the Olympics has been obnoxious and obscene though. |
Not posted for a while but felt the need here.
Clive - in terms of financial morals, I think this is the wrong tree to bark up. The cost of the Olympics is dwarfed by bailouts, the smoke and mirrors of quantitative easing and tax evasion from the very wealthy. Given that the government is firmly opposed to measures that might support growth, I choose to see the Olympics as the only stimulus package they've left in place. I'd much rather see the money spent here than propping up banks that continue with the obscene and immoral bonus culture.
In terms of the regeneration versus commercialisation agenda, cities need to develop. I used to live in Bethnal Green, well before the artists' takeover, I have no nostalgia for what it once was - authenticity alone doesn't equate to value.
For me, the opening ceremony was exciting and poignant and I'd say two things about the London Olympics:
1. Having got it, it was pretty essential that we give a good account of ourselves
2. Offering an opportunity for Mitt Romney to get himself into some deep water does a service for the entire world! |
Well said!!!! |

Aye I'm a digger driver and at work on a Saturday and yeah I work an 80 hr a week or so to keep my business going so my apologies if I don't proof read every post,
And to be clear those efficiency savings where put in by labour so where do we turn? I really hoped that the Libs might tame the torries and we'd crawl out of this with a more private sector driven economy rather than state borrowing lead subsidies of the public sector as was but it's all gone to pot, torries punishing the left wing unions, unions fighting back with strikes claiming public support yet can only manage 57% of a 20% turn out.
We need a new system were stuff gets done to help people not just your wrong we're right politics we have now.

Giles
All credit to you for the effort you put. You're a business owner though and the majority of people working in the private sector aren't - they work in offices, shops, factories etc - they're not putting in 80 hours per week. When I worked in a hospital many of us were working those sorts of hours - perhaps not every week, but many of them. I don't think there is a divide in private sector / public sector effort as you allude to earlier in this thread. You'll find those who work hard and less hard in both sectors.
In terms of subsidising the public sector - what do you mean? Public sector pensions? I'm not sure how pensions are any different to salary - both are just part of the remuneration package and those packages are market driven as any part of the labour market might be. Public services driven by demand by the public lead to workforce requirements - these translate into commissions for doctors, nurses, teachers etc - the only way they've got to manage the supply of prospective professionals is manipulate the remuneration. Public demand for public service thus drives public sector pay.
I'm actually all for public sector efficiencies, including the NHS, but it definitely results in cuts which will and do impact on the services that were demanded by the public in the first place. It isn't like the public sector has just autonomously bloated itself; expectations of today's population of a right to instant everything (for free) has created something highly problematical as politicians have sought to meet the demands of an increasingly expectant and demanding population.
Until we, as society, address the something-for-nothing culture, so the cycle will continue. The values of the Olympic sports (though not necessarily the commercial machine behind them) certainly offer a counterpoint to the something-for-nothing culture that has got us where we are. |

I thought the way the cauldron was created was especially wonderful, especially how it is linked with each of the countries being represented.. I was wondering what these things were that they were carrying in alongside each flag.. If they announced what they were beforehand I missed it. |

I think correcting Americans who can't get their head round the UK or Britain not being called England should be an Olympic sport in itself. ;) |

I left a message on NBC's facebook page, and encourage everyone else to do the same.
It won't change anything what they've already done, but maybe someone will get a clue.

I'm glad NBC isn't the only source I get on the idiot box. Their coverage is downright deplorable.
Why is it every athlete always has a sob story behind them? Why do they not show sports without American athletes competing? Why do they always use the most incompetent commentators (Bob Costas especially)?

Aren't all the internet sources also NBC-related? Or is there a way to watch on the internet that avoids it? |

The US National Volleyball team just finished playing Serbia and I kept looking to see which branch of NBC was airing it live while the game was going on. It wasn't like it was at a time where America was asleep or anything, because the game started at 8:45 AM PST. Well I just found out that they will be showing the game after the game has already ended and results posted all over the internet. Streaming the game should not be the primary option when you are home sitting in front of your TV, because the quality is not the same as high definition and not everybody is set up for it. I am bothered by this. |
