I made the mistake of trying to guess what voters might be looking for all on my own when this is probably best done by committee.

I gave my image heavy processing guessing that would be okay for this challenge and might score well and a couple of comments have come in already making it clear I was wrong about this. If I am going to continue to be a recluse before posting my entries I had better just enter things I personally like and stop guessing what the voters might embrace.

It's going to be a long week and I wish I could just brush my entry under the rug. Not so much for the score which isn't that bad, but for the processing that I don't even like myself- what was I thinking? :(

I used to think like this but now...I challenge myself and enter what I like and what challenges me to think differently about my own work vs figuring out what the voters may like or not like.

Unfortunately, I have not reached out for other member's opinions as I simply don't have the time that I would like to have to do the same in return for others nor, do I feel qualified to be handing out advice LOL...so, I'm also going it "alone" in here as well. It may not be the best strategy but, it's the one that I can handle best. Perhaps, I should find ways to make more time to do this as well.

However, please, please, please...do NOT judge your work according to the scoring in these challenges!!! :)

There's a whole lot of factors that come into play as to what hits the front pages...I've learned through discussions on differing aspects over the years in here. I now no longer take these scores so seriously. It feels really "freeing" to just shoot for the love of shooting something that I'M proud of.

Hang in there and let the value of the scores slide. Value the comments and how YOU feel about your shot more than anything else. :)

Comment have been great. Only one very minor "personal preference" critique, but that person also totally got what I was trying to convey.

It amazed me that people take this so seriously. It is a virtual contest with a virtual ribbon.

The best of ,,,means that YOU put in the shot that is your best shot. Not what you think other people will vote on high or low, not what other people will love or hate.

This is YOUR time to shine, with what YOU think is your best.

This could mean your lighting, your composition, your thoughts, your concept, this means what makes you happy, what makes you look at your own picture and give a sigh of happiness.

I entered last year, my best shot, which happened to ribbon, this year, I did the same thing and put in a shot that I love, that I thought was my best shot, to me, it meant, freedom, creativity, editing, something that when I look at it, it makes me feel free, makes me happy, makes me lose myself in it. It is not going to win at all, but I have this shot blown up and on my wall, and everytime I look at it, I sigh and I think of happiness and how excited I actually was to take it, see it in RAW and process it, till I sighed even louder.

Other people will not see that, some may, but it is about YOU, not them.

THAT is what the Best Of means,,,,

NOT what other people think.

Past ribbon winners tend to have more nonchalance to winning ribbons in the Best of challenge..
OR you are very disappointed yourself at your score this year?

Agreed. I entered a shot I love and in it is an expression of love that I am proud to proclaim ...and a benediction. Many will not 'see it' but a few will appreciate it. I can certainly wish more would 'see' it but wishes are fishes; they slip away if there is not that bright shiny hook;-)

The numbers that matter to me now is not the score but the number of comments.

I am happy that the number of comments currently is 4 ...and I hope there will be a few more in the coming days.

Stats: You have rated 406 of 406 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 14 images (3%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 6.0099.

I have flexed my brain muscles enough tonight - time to rest. More commenting on the morrow.

I have to completely agree with Juliet! I entered what I love of mine, what I actually thought "Best Of" when I first viewed it as the shot made me smile and it showed ME that what I was doing was pleasing to ME! Most enter and share their entries with the rest of us to do just that, SHARE (and a small bit of showing off ;} ), but the scores....as in every other challenge, are based upon subjectivity. If you aren't attached to the photo you entered, thinking it truly is what you want people to recognize as your best for 2011, and you enter a shot purely for the scores and nothing else, it is unfortunate. My photography is nowhere near what many score on this particular site, but, as a photographer, I have grown and am proud of what I now do. My scores are trending up, but nowhere near ribbon territory and I'm OK with that. As has been said over and over and over here...the end result should be that YOU like your shot. My stuff is MY stuff and in no way mainstream DPC eye candy and I'm great with that and have no desire to start shooting and entering for the pure sake of pleasing everyone else. The key is to help others "see" that there are always many different ways to look at something and hopefully people will be open minded and entertain something other than their own personal idea and their idea only!

I also don't believe that just because one has won a ribbon, the photographer becomes less worried about scoring as they have their ribbon. I believe that they are comfortable in their photography and are pleasing themselves, not trying to please everyone else.

Many enter purely to get a higher score, while others enter what they like, hoping, but not worried about whether others can appreciate what it is the photographer saw and is conveying, but the best gage of that, on this site anyway, is a high score (since few now bother to comment). The Posthumous Thread is a prime example of people shooting what they like, regardless of whether the masses like their shot or not, and people appreciating it, even if it scores poorly.

Shoot for YOU, not for what everybody else will or won't like.

I do agree with Juliet (age 95) and Kat (age 6) and the 100+ years of experience they bring to the table. People are commenting like they were expecting a gift -- shrugging and apologizing (in my case). I think the challenge name creates high expectations. Why not call it the 2011 Free Study? One more comment to the effect of "this was your best shot of the whole year?" will cause me to jump out my basement window.

I was thinking along similar lines as I was considering possible images this time around. You often like different images you took for quite different reasons, and that does not lend itself to the notion of "ranking" them as better/worse than each other.

I'd prefer the challenge to be called "2011 Free Study"

Yes, this ought to be the one challenge of the year where one abandons the desire to please anybody else, and publishes something solely as an autobiographical marker ... 'This was the photographer I wanted to be in 2011'. An unfettered expression of one's self.

So it should be called something else. And it should be juried.

That would be good and much more inspiring, in fact more juried challenges would be awesome.

Aren't we having a jury led evaluation this time around? It's always fun to see results of the two different judgment criteria.

Phew, finally hit 6! Now I just need to hope it stays there (although what I'm really wanting is a final score above 6.0089 so it gets in my top 5).

Just created an Art of 2011 challenge suggestion, check it out and see what you think.

I'm struck by how many of them have the title as what the person named the file. I guess titles shouldn't matter since it is a photography contest, but I can't help but be swayed when the title matches the image in more than just a series of numbers and edit techniques.

I'm in the 5.7+ range, which is as I expected. I honestly had others I would have considered but my original external hard drive wasn't recognized by my computer, so I need to have someone download all of it's memory to my new one.

Good luck everyone!!

My entry has many flaws but it was the best I could find... There are some that I considered the best but where already within the challenges of 2011.

Its funny / sad how I realized that DPC is still an engine for me to shoot, and how out of its context I do not have many other photos.

As for the score it started bad in low 4s but now is OK
