Some of FLW's designs create emotion for me. |

I would think something as simple as this would qualify. |

Totally guessing, but my thoughts went to soaring rooflines as an expression of joy or freedom, and sterile apartment houses with tiny windows as an example of feeling contained and hopeless. A really ornate facade is boasting, though it could make the viewer either jealous or resentful ... or maybe awed. Something like that, anyway. I may have to venture out of the suburbs to find anything that speaks to me LOL. Although now that I think about it, a row of McMansions makes me think of people who really want to conform to fit in, and then there could be one quirky house that stands out to make you think of a rebel.
There's my 2-3 cents ;-) |

You may want to look at this Posthumous Architectural thread. It was the thread in which the original challenge suggestion was made. |

If the subject is architecture & the style of the shot is to be emotive, then it seems to be mainly about the light & camera angle. But I expect some will also be looking for architecture that is emotive & take a technically correct shot of that. Either way, voting out to be a challenge in itself.

Funny how no one has the same vision of the challenge meaning - this will be the perfect field for the troll voters ;-) |

Thanks, Mark, for posting the link to the original thread. And pixelpig is on the right track with what I had in mind. As said in the original thread, architects are all about the light. Don't forget to consider the interior of structures, how the light cuts through them, illuminates them, creates pools of moody shadows, etc. Think beyond capturing the structure, and find it's "soul" for lack of a better word.
Here are a few examples I found that are in that ballpark:
The image can contain the whole structure, part of the structure, the interior or the exterior, be modern or old, be tall or short. It just has to show more than JUST the building. |

Well, it doesn't preclude you tone mapping a single shot if you want... |

Here are some of mine, that might qualify as emotive.

Hmm, been shooting for this today but it's tough deciding what meets the criteria, e.g. in this example:
Wouldn't that get a lot of dnmc votes due to the skater being the subject? Just wondering what other peoples thoughts are. |

One thing worth noting: challenge description specifies "structure" ("Take a picture of a structure in a way that emphasizes emotional content rather than form. Subject should be identifiable as a structure..."), so it wouldn't HAVE to be a building. A bridge, for example, would work in that definition for sure. And a bunch of other things that are "built" but not "buildings"...

R. | You missed this:
"it should be predominantly about the building." |

That's the confusion, alright: Titled "architecture", refers to "structure" twice and then sums it up using "building". They don't seem to put a lot of thought into these descriptions sometimes.

When I first saw this challenge I had a beautiful old bridge in mind (I've shot it a few times already). However, once I saw this last part of the challenge description I decided against it so I won't be entering this challenge. Mind you, I will be voting as if that last part was not read by the photog and will not be penalising anyone for entering structures other than buildings. I hope others will do the same.

Ok the consensus seems to be, that there will be NO DNMC, b/c it's open to a variety of interpretations! |
