Out of the 5 open challenges, at the moment, 4 are advanced, 1 is basic. Out of the three in voting, none are basic. That is too much to bear?
Basic is too hard? Maybe that is why this is called DPChallenge... |

For what it is worth, I just pulled my Abstract Macro entry because of the basic rules limitation. It would just look a whole lot better with even some slight cloning and local exposure adjustments that a first grader could learn to do in five minutes.
What's frustrating is the complete waste of time this has been for me. I had to spend an hour shooting with a less than ideal composition to avoid bright highlights that could not be dealt with properly under basic rules. So the images are useless even if I did give them advanced processing and try and use them for another purpose.
It's just one challenge so not that big a deal I guess. It does seem to me though that the few being catered to that don't want to spend an hour learning to dodge, burn, clone, etc. are holding back the many any time we have these limitations set in place... |

Basic editing challenges us to get it right at the time of exposure. Can't clone that pole out of someone's head afterwards, you have to pay attention. Basic has it's place.

I'm on the fence. I think we should think more about our incamera experience.
But I don't think we should have to worry about cloning imperfections or using lens distortion tools. |

Aw, gee. I guess it's harder than I thought to get a decent picture with the 5D Mark II. The thing is I find it hard to let go of all the power - holding back the many - in basic challenges. |

I here what you are saying Steve :) I guess for me it would make more sense to have more "Minimal" challenges (with the ability to crop) instead of basic challenges if we really want to learn good fundamentals. |

basic editing is like fooling around with the girl and not being able to go all the way. it might be fun and good enough for some a times, but in the end, its frustrating and pointless.
