Are you delusional? This challenge is for ribbon winners, not creative artists.

Like that ribbon whore ursula...

Maybe we should just have the challenge minus the word "Masters". That might make people less prickly.

So instead of a Master's Free Study it would just be a Free Study? We already have those!

I have no problem with the name or the challenge. The only thing that disturbed me was Deb claiming to be less creative than other ribbon winners?!

Let's put this in order.

Besides the regular weekly challenges, here are the things Langdon should consider...

1-Masters challenge, 4 or more ribbon winners and at least one blue ribbon required. It doesn't matter if 10 people enters, at the end, we'll watch a good show (hopefully) - Basic Editing
2-New Members Challenge. Must be a member, registering is not enough. Must not have any ribbons and only be here less than 3 months. This way we give opportunity to others to win ribbon and not feel so bad for their work to start with (hopefully that is) - Advanced Editing
3-Because of cliches, I would like to see more detailed challenge rules such as "Macro" challenge no bug, no flower no drops, "Night Shots" challenge no auroras, any "colors" challenge without macro shots and without glasses (any kind) etc.... This will open up more opportunities for others.

Above list don't require website code change. They all aim for new members (#1 for new members to see what kind of talents we have here) and for older members who are not able to win any ribbon or HM for years (not because they are bad, because too many cliches are winning.

By the way, whatever happened to "Membership handouts"? We used to had many people helping others to become members, but that is totally gone now. I think I will start DPC Hats giveaway with membership handouts with help of other members.

Ya, that disturbs all of us, but that's Deb being Deb...

Y'all is modest, but there are some who consider you one of the most compelling talents in DPC, the more so because you seem oblivious to the clarity and concision of your own vision.

I didn't know 'concision' was a word. Learn something every day.

Maybe we need an "In the Style of Melethia" challenge, AKA the "Concision Vision challenge."

BASIC editing for a MASTERS challenge? What on earth for?

My feelings exactly. I can see no point in people submitting suboptimal images for this challenge.

Why on earth not?

This is meant to be a competitive photography site, not who can out-PS/Topaz/HDR everyone else...isn't it?

And if the Masters are so good that they do have a plethora of ribbons with which to gain entry to this very elite challenge, then they should easily be able to wow us with wonderful photos that have no more than Basic Editing.

Hell, I say make the Masters FS Challenge a Minimal Editing challenge.

I think it should be a pinhole camera challenge with NO editing. They should make copies of the prints for every DPC member and mail them out.

Was there this much jabber for the last MFS? Why so much BS? Post the challenge. Those who want to enter, vote comment or just peruse do so, those who don't then don't ! Why does everything have to be a big issue around here?

The last MFS worked out fine, why mess with it?

I wish people would stop whining about ribbons and just enjoy the experience. Winning a ribbon around here doesn't make one a great photographer. Heck winning several ribbons doesn't make one a great photog!

Learning and progressing is much more fun than winning. But that's just me.

I miss seeing "the DPC hall of famers" and their creations. It only makes me want to improve. That,s what drew me to this place.

The mystique is somewhat lost for me.
(I know there are still a few great talents here)

Just not the same for me. I want the old DPC or just fresh talent that will challenge the rest of us.

And no fancy schmancy paper or framing either. Don't want to give the illusion of a finished product.

To be honest your self portrait that won the blue was an inspiration to me. Maybe you and your whiny brethren can carry the torch for just a bit before someone steps up to keep you interested.

Ya, that disturbs all of us, but that's Deb being Deb...

Ha! Yeah, I'm just that way sometimes. I still say go with the challenge. If it gets Jorge to jump in, all the better! I do like the idea of a themed challenge, though. Make some of you get out of your comfort zones! Can't say what that theme would be... something intangible would be best, I think.

Thx for the kind words
I don't think I was whining. I also don't see myself as one of those " carrying the torch"
I just miss seeing some of the work from the people that are no longer active.
So if a MFS brings them back for a brief moment why would people have a problem with that? Elitism isn't what I think when one of these challenges appear. These people have earned the right compete in such a challenge. We all have an opportunity to reach that level. It is up to the individual to strive for that. You don't want to strive for that level, that's fine don't knock others for achieving.

I didn't mean to come off like a jerk there. I did horribly at a pub quiz and I was down.

I don't see the Masters challenge as an elitist thing either. The DPL was great for bringing folks back and boosting participation. Anything along those lines is good for the site.

I'm on an expat site here in Germany for English-speakers and every day I get to read about how great the site used to be, and how it's not the same and how it's stale or lame or not as fun. It gets old. Like there, DPC is an online community where it's what you make of it. That's all I was saying.

Hey no prob.

No controversy intended - but I would like to see this. This last happened around the time I joined DPC and it was fundamental in inspiring me to take better pictures.
09/01/2012 10:55:07 AM · #170
I going to chance my arm and resurrect this. I remember the last one vividly - I had no ribbons at the time but I still very much enjoyed viewing it. It also made me want to take part in the next one. I've been here nearly four years now and haven't had the opportunity to enter one.

Surely there must be more than the 41 people who entered the last expert challenge who would submit...? In that case, arguments in relation to exclusivity would seem to be a bit moot.
09/01/2012 10:59:43 AM · #171
Is it two ribbons to enter? Either way I'd be all for this.
09/01/2012 11:03:01 AM · #172
It's just the name that's a little put-offish..... I'm sure it would be a good show and I suspect you would have more than 41 entries. I say yes.
09/01/2012 02:04:34 PM · #173
I'd be for it, but I shudder to think what the ribbon winners will look like now days. Over the past few master studies it's gone from one-of-a-kind type shots to challenge rejects (ie outtakes) placing in the top ten. If we run this I say you can't enter any other challenge during that week.
09/01/2012 03:59:15 PM · #174
I feel like I'd be in the wrong group, could I not stain myself brown for this one, oh maybe not.
