I am considering entering a photo or two in the State Fair of Texas...and, having never done anything like that before, wanted to find out from you seasoned veterans out there, who will tell me like it is I am sure, if my two of my pictures would be decent enough choices for such a vast undertaking. I know that there will be thousands of entries...but I won't know unless I try, right?
There are categories for amateurs and pros, so I can submit in the amateur section (thank goodness), and I can submit 2 photos total...in either color, B&W, or special effects. The entry fee is only a few dollars, so that's not a problem. I am considering "Jazz" for the color photo and "Summer at the Farm" for special effects.
Anyway...you've seen them...is it worth my time trying?

Go for it Laurie!
Both shots are first-rate and worthy of any public display, competition of not.
Beam when you see them, & watch the public's reactions when they see them.
Keep us posted!

I'm not a seasoned veteran, but if you don't enter both of those pictures, I'll never forgive you. ;-) The only thing I would do first is clean up (or blur out) some of the noise in the jazz photo in the background on the right, because that will show up quite a bit when printed in a larger size. But both of those shots are really excellent (as determined by DPC voters!) and should do really well.
Good luck!

Summer at the Farm screams to be entered at a State Fair. If you don't enter at least that one, I'm going to unleash 1,000 small wooden manikins to come march on Texas...

Hmmmm...better have my camera ready for that one. Sounds like it would fit in my project quite nicely. LOL
Thanks for your support...I just didn't want to feel stupid when they call and say, "Thanks for playing! Come get your crap!" I'll enter them and hope for the best. They have places and best in show in the color and B&W sections for each class of photos entered (still life, rural, etc...) but not for the special effects one (it figures). I won't know until I try. So I'll do it. The fair runs late Sept. through late Oct. but they prejudge photos, so I don't know what kind of time frame we're looking at. I have to enter them by August 5, so I'll order them from dpcprints. Thanks for your input!
BTW...jadin...I love that picture of JP shaving as well...but I don't know if it would garner the same emotive response...but then I could be wrong! :o)

Jazz is a great photo, go for it
Summer on the farm on the other hand is an awesome image, This would win in any competition anywhere. One of the best i have ever seen.
Keep up the good work
You may get thrown out of the amature section because of the professional quality of your work:)

Your probably right, "Summer at the Farm" will probably do better for mass market.
Danny: On the fence is stellar, I also like Made for Two; DSC_2182.jpg (have you tried this one b&w?); Sundry (silohet one) is neat; there is plenty of other ones I like but none I can exactly say "yeah! submit that one!"
edit: i had to search for dairy queen, but yeah that one is great! couldn't find strength of a nation.

Hey go for it! THose two shots are wonderful and "Summer at the Farm" is a must....Be sure to print in the highest quality and color profile as where you might getting to print out...Perhaps call the printers to see what exsactly which color profile you will need to convert too...and other techinical questions. I think too, just just use a white matting for both and keep it simple when frameing them...IMO.....
Looks that you color selction is seperated from the balack and white in Summerat the farm...But I blew it up to look closer and at the right eyeof the 1st boy and corner of the mouth of the 2nd, there seems to be one area that seems colored where it may not have to be....almost distracting....you can barely see it with looking at the photo as is...but, it might be something to desaturate....
I don't see any problems with Jazz...imo...just to be sure to print it with a higher resolution and not the copies you have saveed to up load here....
Hope you have fun and do well....I have entered two of mine, which are on my website and on here in my profile page....I have enter stuff along time ago to my State Fair....This year, is my first for photos too...I'll find out if I made it to the jugdeing part in about 2 weeks. Hope to hear more...:)

I'm going to have them printed through DPC Prints; I uploaded the high res versions of both...I am assuming the quality will be great, as I haven't ordered from them before. Thanks for the tip on the two spots that I need to look at, I'll definitely check those out and resubmit the print if necessary.
Good luck with your fair...and me being nosy, which two did you submit? :o)

I think both images are good and you should go for it. Opinions and tastes are so very subjective and one of them could be just the image that captivates the judges on the day.
And photo magazines always say that they hear comments from people who, on seeing the chosen winners, mutter that they could have done better but didn't enter it because they didn't think they stood a chance.
You have to be IN IT TO WIN IT!
GOOD LUCK!
