So entering a more "normal" photo in an Expert ruleset challenge is now OOB? |

re: Flip and bend...
this type of processing is REALLY addicting... take a totally mundane photo, and WOW! the textures/patterns and even depth
gonna be hard to choose one.
might have to join the side challenge, too.
p.s. starting from an iPad photo there is software to create the same effects as the PS process with just a few swipes.

Obscure for sure.
As for extra points, my new philosophy for voting on Expert challenges is going to be something like this:
Score 8-10 for seamlessly blended, pure fantasy images (like Gyaban's stuff).
Score 5-7 for challenge entries that evidently attempted to use Expert editing options, where you can tell multiple photos (or pieces) were combined, although maybe a bit sloppy.
Score 1-4 for challenge entries that are typical, run of the mill photos where no attempt at using Expert editing options is evident.
Embracing the Expert challenges - yes! |

??? Thanks in advance for the low vote. Maybe we could change the name of the site to Photoshop_R_Us.

I really don't care how you vote! You obviously have a bee in your bonnet over this and its starting to sound very childish!
Let's all enjoy the "challenge" whatever rules and move on. |

It's only "Photoshop_R_Us" when there's Expert challenges on the menu. |

Yes, I have a strong opinion on the Expert editing ruleset, and I've come to embrace it. No longer opposed. Prefer not to see so many, yes, but if Expert challenges are being run I now will applaud the efforts of those entries that truly rise above all else and use the toolset to their best advantage.
However, I would like to go on record as stating that I've not once made any references to other DPC members in any personal manner whatsoever - it would be nice if all of us could keep that hat on.

The overall ratio is almost 6:1 for the 'photographic' challenges (if you like to call 'em like that), so... what are we talking about? Last year they were much more - now it's one every two weeks, is it sooooo much? The fact that we have 3 in a row it's weird but doesn't change how advanced and minimal are waaaaay more in numbers - THIS is the fact. |

For reference - the earlier posting with the "facts".
Originally posted by Alexkc: The challenges we had this year (not considering the ones in voting and the ones open to submission):

Expert 7
Minimal 6
So the site is steering towards fantasy like stuff? Strange way to do that: 48+6 vs 7. |
Agreed, the numbers for the year are much greater for non-Expert challenges. Numbers can be played with to work in anyone's favor if so desired.
For example, it could be looked at as the number of Expert challenges went from 7 to 10 in one week, that's a 43% increase in Expert challenges for the year, in ONE WEEK.
I think it's sufficient to say that it's quite unusual to see 3 Expert challenges for entry submission at the same time. Trend or not ... as I said before, only time will tell. |

That reminds me of an article I read this week that said the number of confirmed MERS cases in the US "tripled" last week. The facts? It went from 1 case to 3. Facts are an important. |

I'd just like to point out that the challenge ruleset lays out what's allowable, not what's required. The whole rationale behind creating the expert ruleset was to allow our members to experiment with (and enter) images that use increasingly more-complex processing solutions. The specific motivating factors, at the time, were HDR images, Textured-overlay images, and, to a lesser extent, multi-image compositing. Eventually HDR and focus-stacking were incorporated into the advanced ruleset after they were "proved" in expert challenges.
The ruleset has kind of run away from us lately, so that extremely complex editing extravaganzas have come to be practically de rigeur, but that certainly wasn't the goal. The idea was just to open *some* challenges up to more editing options. And that's still the state of the ruleset, so to speak. I don't think it's proving any valid point to talk about in some manner penalizing, by low votes, images that don't "use" the expert editing ruleset. As far as I'm concerned that's just a pointless splurge of hyperbolic rhetoric. |

With an advertising budget large enough to support TV ads you'd think they could've afforded to survey more than ten dentists....

The three expert challenges in a row finally convinced me to try some 'expert' moves in Photoshop. Awesome. Well not my results, but it was awesome just to actually have success combining parts of different photos. |

We all love this place, that's obvious. Roll with the punches then. Have an imagination or learn a few things. It's all expert, really. |

I still think a name change of the rulesets is in order. The name "Expert" implies that the challenge is for expert photographers, as if it's a more rigorous challenge than an advanced challenge and way beyond a basic one.
