I am entering a Photo Contest for the Orange Audubon Society. I can enter 5 photos and I'm having a terrible time picking my 5th entry...if you could help me out I would really appreciate it. If you see something obvious that needs to be tweaked please tell me.

The rules in this photo contest are very, very strict. The photo's can be altered but not "overcooked". Nothing non-native/man made to Florida can be in the pictures.

I need you to help me pick 2 photo's of these 4.

These are finally finished and ready to go

Thank you.

This one has the most impact for me.

This one is very fine art feeling

And I love the pop of blue on this one, I would like just a little more space on the bottom though.

The 2 I liked the most were the 3rd one(great white heron chick) and the 7th one (great white heron with the brilliant feathers)

I did not like the #1 shot because of lack of detail on the body

I don't think we're being very helpful here :) Correct me if I'm wrong, Ja-9, but you have already decided on the last three and want two more from the top four. Correct?

Wonderful images! Of the four in question, I'm usually a sucker for a bird in flight but I feel these are your two strongest images:

The other two are great also but I feel the branch in the heron's beak hides the birds face two much and with the chicks (on my iPad) the top of the main chick's head is blown enough to be drawing my attention to it. I hope this helps and good luck. They are all amazing photos.

ahhhh yes...that is what I'm after...but also if there are any glaringly awful things that I can correct...

For the Audubon Society I think #3 and #4 are more what you might see in their books.

i think they are all wonderfully processed.

this one if you clone out or crop those leaves at the top.

of the 4, i like #3 and #4 the best.

I'd definitely choose the 4th one, but there looks like there might be an ever so slight hint of halo on the head. Could also be the color of the water itself, sorta hard to tell. It's not terribly noticeable in any case. And the 3rd one is nice, but you do already have a pic of young birds, which I find to be stronger. The bird in flight has a bit busy of a background and the 1st one loses some bird details which I'd imagine are key for Audubon.

Thank you everyone...you are definitely helping me out...

ETA: Last year's Photo Contest just thought you might be interested...there is a whole list of previous contests.

+1
I like the fine art feel of #1, & the face & feather detail in #4.

I'd go with the last two of the four. Nice set all around.

ok, here is the "full frame"

to crop or not to crop...and how much (this isn't totally finished, so any input would be helpful)

I am not sure how much to crop but I would tend to leave the same amount of room top and bottom rather than your original post in which there was more room at the top. Great set of shot, Janine. Good luck.

OK - I never remark on these kinds of things so take this as just my 2 cents. I would enter #1 & #4. The only thing I might try to do is correct the blown out areas of the back of the neck and the top of the shoulder on the egret. The blue water behind the Anhinga sets it off beautifully and I don't see anything to change in that one. Just my personal opinion. All of them are gorgeous and I would love to find out where you shot them.

All around Florida...

Tri-Colored Heron - Ding Darling NWRC - Sanibel, FL
Baby Great White Egrets (2) - Gatorland - Kissimmee, FL
Anhinga - Lake Eola - Downtown Orlando, FL
Great White Egret in Flight - Kraft Azalea Park - Winter Park, FL
Great White Egret on Bush - Gatorland - Kissimmee, FL

some of you may laugh at the Gatorland ones...but it's a natural rookery/breeding colony. 100's of birds come in to nest there. What is so wonderful about it is that you are on a boardwalk at about the same height as the nests. You can see right into them. Some of the nests/birds are within "arm's reach"...it's pretty amazing!!! Last year I purchased my photo pass at the awards banquet for the Audubon Society. It lets me in at 7:30 and I can stay until dusk/dark... If any of you are ever here during the migratory/breeding season (Jan - Jun) it's a visit that is well worth it.
