There's a local photo contest I was considering entering with "Spring" as the topic. The competition usually garners some pretty decent work, and I can't decide if any of these are worth entering or not. I love them, but I'm also biased since I've been smooched by the little punkin.
So...honest opinions: worth entering? If so, which one?
I appreciate any thoughts...deadline is midnight tomorrow.

Peter, I like em all, but if I was to plump for one of them it would be the last one as I look at them.
I like the b/w ones but how do they look in colour ?
I would have no problem entering any of them.Great series.

Wow! Those are ALL great! I think #7 is probably the best with #6 a close second. Great job, and good luck. Let us know which one WINS!
EDIT: Changing... #6 is the best. #7 is second.

Very beautiful markings. Great captures.
They are all good!
I like the classic look of this one with both of them having
their ears up.
and I like the last one. Shows character and is emotive.

I left some comments on the shots. The second one is my favorite, and although I'm a fan of the toning, I dont think it screams 'spring' as I usually associate lots of bright colors with it. Very nice series!

Gives the sense of mother teaching the young how to run. Kind of touching. |

Last one IS great!
But I also love the first one - shame it's not sharp. It's a lovely portrait.

Did you do a little dodging on any of the shots? |
|
|
04/16/2004 03:42:10 AM · #11 |
@ Fadoi - a little. I should have mentioned those are the rough cuts. If I decide to enter one, I'll take more care in preparing. *edit - more burning than dodging, but who's counting?
@ KV - i was sad about the blur too - I'd actually put the cam away for the day when i saw that, so had no time to set up, and the light was low. :(
@ Mood/Peecee - the light was really flat, and it's barely spring here, so it's mostly brown and grey, hence the quadtone choice. I suppose there's atemptation to go take a pic of some bright flowers or something, but i vowed to only take pics i dig from now on :)
@ Marjo - Bill (the guy in the pic/ the breeder) agrees with you - he likes that best, and he knows the breed inside and out. good call :)
@ Chris, DG, Bill - thanks for the input...at least you mostly agree with each other :)
thanks again.

One more vote for the last one ... he seems so curious! The perspective is great! |

Another vote for , for the angle, perspective and the other horse looking over the shoulder feel.
Works for me too, just to show the size difference between the two.
Almost works - I love the glow you've added to the foal, but the sky/ background elements aren't very interesting. If you could get away with cropping tight on them, maybe but as is it doesn't really grab me.
Has the human interest aspect in spades, works well and the textured background from the larger horse just really tips it over the edge - another strong option. Honestly, I feel the slight lack of sharpness doesn't damage the impact at all: this as a great image. I'd enter this one and the last one if it were me.

the last one really engages the viewer so that's the one I would enter. are you dodging and burning the shots in PS because the mommy horses head to the left looks a little off ? other than that beautiful work! good luck :) |

yes, I burned the heck out of most of them. as i mentioned these were really rough cuts just to give the impression i was trying to convey (like 2 minute edits each). I'll get a little more serious with the ones i think i'll keep. no point wasting all that time if I'm not. :)
thanks again all for the input. I have until midnight tonight to decide i guess :)

I like the last one too but I'm concened that more sharpness is on the mamma horse than on the newborn. It looks a little odd the way the hooves are cut off. Maybe there is more to work with in the original? From what I see here the first one might be the most solid pic though it is not as impactful as the last one. Very nice photos here.

5 is my favorite, but they are just wonderful photos.
Good luck, and I could see any of them doing well in the contest. |

OK so the deadline has passed, and here's what I ultimately submitted (I spent a little more time editing this time around, so the evidence is a little less obvious, and I hope a little cleaner looking)

I should know within the week. Typical me: I've known about it for 6 weeks, and submitted 20 minutes before the deadline. I wonder what my therapist would say about that?
Anyhoo - thanks to all for all the comments and help; all y'all really did help me make my decision.
Respectfully,

I would have said, had I seen this thread when it was first posted, that I didn't see the Spring connection necessarily - not only because you can get foals around anytime, but the landscape in those shots is too wintry-looking for me. Of course, everyone else on the planet may not see it my way, as may not your judge, but if it were me I'd have wanted something to poke me in the eye a little more.
That said, you've definitely submitted the best selection and range of shots there P, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if you win.

Thanks Ed - I appreciate the comments. It's a Canadian contest, and the weather being what it is a foal is a very seasonal thing around here. :) We'll hope they see it my way.
