just an FYI,
i got clarification from the SC that sharpening multiple times is allowed. just remember that you can only use the basic sharpen filter, none of the customizable sharpening filters/tools are allowed. |

Does the order of post processing matter? e.g. can we sharpen multiple times and then resize? Also, If I remember correctly from prior Minimal challenge discussions, there was an issue that we can only resize once? |

Only resize one time. Sharpen (without customization) evidently can be done more than once. Experiment with your image. I only have one image processing application with a non-adjustable sharpen tool. (PSE8) I used the Auto Sharpen. All of my other apps (Aperture, iPhoto, Graphic Converter, Pixelmator, Sharpener Pro) ONLY have sharpen tools WITH sliders or degrees of adjustment. Those are not allowed, even if one uses the sharpen tool in default mode.

| I was wondering if it is allowed to sharpen and then fade it back a bit? The default sharpening of the resized image was too strong for my taste. Nothing on "fade" in the ruleset... |

Correct, you can only resize in a single step from the original to the final size. |

Sorry, no fading allowed; that's not the "default" setting but an adjustment to the filter. |

I'm not entering this one. As much as I like street photography, I went with Photoshop terms this week. However, I'll enjoy passing out 1's (or is that 10's?) to everyone who did choose to enter this one. Especially looking forward to the midget hooker shot.

I use lightroom so i'm not able to use any of its sharpening features, but when i export the photo for resizing there is an option to sharpen for screen or paper ext. can i use this or not ?, there is no slider just a standard, low or high choice box.
Really enjoyed shooting for this challenge, it was nice trying to get the photo good straight out of the camera, i'm not overwhelmed by my result but i'm sure i learned a lot with this one. Looking forward to seeing everyone's effort. |

well, finally decided out of a small handful of ones i liked. minimal editing does make post processing simple and quick. it's definitely nice dedicating just 2-3 minutes to process vs. hours.
and on the subject of midget hooker shots, i missed out on the most incredible opportunity to get a really unique shot....
when i was on my normal morning walk at 6am, i came across a transvestite prostitute that was probably close to 60 years old. she had on a red skin-tight-one piece-way too short outfit on, a long-straight-dark red wig, and using a walker. damn, if i only had my camera with me at the time.
she did say a nice good morning to me which was kind of her. |

Well, it tells you that MOST editing tools aren't allowed, and then clarifies by saying "you MAY...sharpen your entry using your editing software’s “sharpen” or equivalent option. The use of customizable sharpening tools, such as Unsharp Mask, is not allowed."
On that note, I just downloaded GIMP for my editing a little while ago, and as far as I can see, it doesn't have an auto-sharpen feature, only adjustable sharpening tools.
I would REALLY like to sharpen my image before I submit it. Does anyone know of a free editing program I could download that has auto-sharpen? Please please please let me know!

Not one of my best photos, by any stretch, but you get the idea. Plus, I was shooting from the hip then, and have since gotten away from that. I still like to get up close. Good luck with your new lady friend.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I love taking off heads and limbs. I pulled out my old Olympus C-7000 this past week, just for this challenge (since I have to shoot JPG anyway, I put the better glass aside). At it's widest it's 38mm -- still not enough. I ruined this shot cause I couldn't quickly fit everyone in the frame. So it goes.

download the trial version of cs3 photoshop then the trial of cs4 then the trial of cs5... gives you like what 3 months of photoshop? ;) |

yeah!! Good for you! Don't worry if it plummets -- you got out and did it! Besides that -- you have a built in excuse. :)
The thing is, when you look back on it a year from now, you'll remember it because of what was going on at the time -- not because of its score. Many of my challenge entries are just ties to other memories.
Besides that, you'll have company. There's absolutely no way my entry will do well. We can commiserate together. :)

Well, I take it by this that a PS7 Sharpen is allowed. How about a Sharpen More or the Sharpen Edges or unsharp mask. Or running it thru the Sharpen more than once?

It really sucks that you cannot start out from RAW in minimal editing. Was it always like this? (If yes, I should have been DQ-d last time I entered, but it was probably over 2 years ago). I've just taken some last-minute shots in RAW (as always) on the way home from work to just figure out now that they are useless for this challenge. Well, next time I better read the rules before shooting...

haha, nice, but i ended up dl'ing irfanview instead, and it was fine
and my friend has PS waiting for me, so all good :)
