I've been trying to wait for my 100th vote, but voting seems slow today.

Actually I was thinking I'd be 5.3 to a 5.5, so it's a bit lower than I expected but pretty much where I thought.

The 'logo' associated with the award was always rubbish so I'll produce a new one (with an eye motif) which I'll dish out from this challenge forwards.
I do need to get better at specifically targeting those images that don't necessarily jump out at a first viewing though - I think I've lost that over the year or so I've been doing this.
Thanks for the encouragement.

100 vote check and to tell you the truth... I'm really happy with this score because I have the kinda shot that really isn't really DPC material. I had it pegged at around 4.8-5.0 so to be above that, I'm happy. I got a few good comments out of the deal and the voting pattern is quite interesting... I'm looking forward to seeing the breakdown after the challenge |

Loving the large number of comments. Half of them are appreciative of me trying something different. The other half are doubtful that the pic conforms to the challenge ruleset. I'm happy :) |

I found that this free study had a fantastic set of photos
First time I gave 4 10s in a FS.
I gave 7 9s and 9 8s! Thats truly alot for me.
I tend to be tougher on the FS because its supposed it be the cream of the crop.... great job!

Are you serious?????
I've gotten about a half dozen of these from you and I took it as a sure sign that my work's been acquiring more subtle and artistic qualities.
I'm pleased, and flattered to have caught your "Unconventional Eye" comments.
Thanks ever so much, and PLEASE don't stop!
Thanks for grabbing mine in this FS, too!

I think perhaps we have been quick to simply check the helpful box, but Paul really did not know how much these comments are worth to many of us. We need to make sure such things do not go unappreciated in the future.

He pointed out things about one of my photos that I didn't even realize. I just thought it was a cool picture. He helped me to realize why I thought it was a cool picture. |

Oops. I certainly wasn't fishing for these sorts of comments (thanks though).
When I first started doing the comments, they were a response to a thread where people were lamenting the paucity of comments for a particular subset of images. I set out to deliberately find images that quietly went about their business and didn't adhere to certain viewer expectations. I would comment on images I wouldn't normally dwell on - force myself to ask the question 'The photographer liked it enough to offer it in the FS - what did they see?' By forcing myself to write quite a long piece, I found I came to appreciate the image more than I might have imagined (at least most of the time).
However, as I've continued with the series, I've become aware that I now tend to restrict my comments to images that do appeal to me, albeit for reasons of their quirkiness. As a consequence I think my comments have become something different to that which I had initially intended.
This month, although I have been doing the longer comments (though they are not as long as they used to be), I've also made a point of commenting on all the 1s I've given out. That act did result in me bumping a few to higher scores - evidence that with the writing comes new appreciation. However, overall I'm not sure it has been a good thing to do; it is difficult to be constructive when you have little positive to say about an image. Having now made the comments, I'm really not sure it benefits anybody - and in truth, I now feel I have been a little self-indulgent on commenting on those particular images. It seemed like a good idea to offer a rationale for a low score, to give some explanation, but when I got down to it and really did it - I doubt I came over as anything but pompous.
OK - enough hijacking of this thread; not the place to do this sort of reflection.
Back to the business at hand:

I've also got one of Paul's Unconventional Eye comments. What a great way to start the year! Just as it was a great way to end 2010 when I got his "Worth a Longer Look" for the November FS. Thanks Mate - and please don't stop.
