Something else to do:
To get rid of the tell tale signs of a 45 deg rotation, scale it to 150% after rotation so the new rotated layer covers the entire layer below. The third one above uses this technique.

To my amazement, when I started with this image , which is a stained glass window I photographed a while ago, when I used the darken blending mode after the first flip (horizontal, and the lighten mode after the second flip, I ended up with this somewhat surrealistic looking image:
Then, even weirder, I found that if I used the lighten blending mode after the first flip, the baby appeared instead of the mother! So then I did one of each, rotated the flipped/merged mother layer 90 degrees and ended up with this odd composite:

Kickin' back, watching the Rose Bowl & flippin' & blendin'! Sometimes Soft Light or Screen creates interesting results.

Well, I don't see how they can keep these out of an Expert Editing challenge... Or am I missing something?

I might be missing something, but my understanding is that you may not create new image areas & essentially that is what we are doing here. I sent them a file & an original. They said No. But, I think I was asking in the context of Advanced Editing. You think we could, under Expert Editing? Wow. |

I haven't discussed this with anyone (like SC types), but personally I think they'd be OK under Expert editing, but none of the other rule sets. |

Oh. Oh yeah I remember now. The subject kind of dominated the editing there. |

From this original
and
From a related original
and which took ages and I like it, but the thumb looks like ****
And from another in the series
Not only is this process so addictive that I can't stop doing them, I have trouble even moving on.

Almost as good as a cup of coffee as a wakeup call.
Here's another one, not quite so out-of-the-park
..and now a variation on that one: This time, I carved out a section in the middle, did a Control J to put it on its own layer, and then did the usual processing. A whole different look ! I may have to pursue this avenue.
Okay, one more edit, and then I'm out of here...
details on the image

I need to step out of the box a bit more - this one is at least uncropped. :-) |

Just a piece of fun as I'm looking for more images that create a 3-D effect when flipped and blended. Robert's (Bear_music's) instant reaction to this was "... it looks like a sandwich press!"

with the standard flip and blend becomes
then with varying rotations, scale and blending modes becomes
Another one with varying rotations and scale (different original, just in case you were wondering WTF):
And one more ...
