correct!

So if, for example the image is a macro of an insect where foreground to background is say 3 or 4mm, if it's all in focus you would call this deep DOF?

Whooeeee!! maybe my first pic to achieve above 6.5...Lets not bet on it but really optimistic here. 25 votes gone...will it drop further?
On the DEEP depth...I can only wonder what went on in the minds of them that took it. Maybe they are a bit like me before I started to think more about the theme of the week...I used to err allot in this..at least in the minds of most commentators.
Good luck to all

So in fact this challenge is actually "make everything in focus" rather then "Deep DOF"

down from 6.0x to 5.8 again .... dang. For anonimous thingy reasons I can't say why I'm upset by that, lets just leave it that several hundred feet in focus all the way is deep DOF in my book ......

Simplified high aperture like f/6.7 or above, the rest will do the camera, but still I think the true deep DOF technique is to have one object up front and a panorama behind it and both to be in focus, clear and sharp

This was my comment

"Simplified high aperture like f/6.7 or above, the rest will do the camera, but still I think the true deep DOF technique is to have one object up front and a panorama behind it and both to be in focus, clear and sharp"

The above statement is not mine

Not true.
I can set my camera to F22 but if I zoom I will loose the large DOF, in addition if I focus at a point in the farfield I will also loose nearfield focus
Look up Hyperfocal distance

i am currently voting and i am surprised by how many shots are actually shallow DOF rather than deep DOF. It seems some did not understand what was expected of this challenge. A quick google search and some reading can provide a great deal of information about what the terms mean and how the vast majority of people will view and vote on the challenge.

Got up to an even 6.0. I'm pleased. Nice if it holds.

There were quite a few images where there is clearly an out of focus foreground and background, with very little DOF range.

totally agree ... I just finished quickly scanning the entries and was amazed by the amount of images with a very shallow DOF ...

I wonder as there are so many shallow dof entries that some many people misread/understood the topic and thought a deep dof was indeed shallow? you know, like when you open up the aperture you get a smaller F stop and when you close it down you get a bigger number?

Yeah maybe that is why I am getting a couple of 1s & 2s. Drop 0.5 in less than 6 votes.

Yikes I spoke too soon, it is getting worse.

so sad that photographers dont understand basic terms. They really should be embarrassed and remove their photo from the challenge.

I have voted on 83 images so far and 30% of those are shallow DOF.
Does this mean that those who entered shallow DOF images will be voting on the true Deep DOF entries as DNMC I wonder

Seriously dropped in just an hour. Someone didn't like it much. No comment of course.

i worked hard on getting Deep DOF, and even with all the shallow ones entered, am sitting at a 4. This stinks!!!

A strong possibility, I think. Or retaliatory voting. Ah well, the open challenges to tend to have more c**p going on in them.

Well I'm happy that I have learned a great deal about hyperfocal distance etc etc as a result of taking part in this so as far as I'm concerned it's been a good one regardless of final score

It's really heartbreaking. My last 3 entries were in the 4s for the majority of the time (missed focus managed to creep up to low 5s). This one in particular I really liked.

I haven't looked at the photos, so I shouldn't be commenting, (but of course I will!)

Is is possible that the people doing macros are trying to show a deep DOF in a shot where it's very difficult? For instance, the second place winner, from the last depth of field challenge, photographed a guitar. The DOF is only 6 about 3-5 feet at most, but it's extremely difficult to get that deep of a depth of field for that type of set up. I actually thought about doing a macro, but getting a dof that's very hard to get in a macro. Could other people be thinking along the same lines? For instance, taking a macro from the front of a grasshopper, it is very difficult to get the whole grasshopper in focus. They could be doing the same thing with macro that the guitar person did.

Just saying, keep an open mind about the type of photograph and the corresponding DOF.

disclaimer: haven't looked at the shots, and I'm in the other challenge--not this one.

That concludes our public service announcement.

Getting some low votes this morning. Whoever was voting last night liked it much better.
