There goes my dreams...I could ask if maybe the shallow depth of field guys are out with a vengeance against the deep depth of field pics? LOL... Hopefully things will turn around....

One thing I have learnt...appart from improving photographic skills is to not take comments personal and also to take it from whom it comes.... I think most people here are out to be constructive and help each other. Great site and great peopel

Well that will certainly skew the results.

Why? It is what it is. Don't worry about it. Be consistent and let the chips fall where they will.

Voting in the open challenges is as harsh and unexplained as always. Down a good chunk over the last couple of votes.

I just joined this site, even though I'm not new to digital photography. I was confused on the challange photos "Deep DOF". I thought this meant that photo should be sharp from A-Z, the F-stop used should be atleast F-16 onwards and good use of hyperfocal length. I found there are atleast 50% entries which are shallow DOF or very soft in focus. Am I wrong here in understanding?

I think people are getting a bit hung up on the concept of having to use a small aperture ie high F number.
For example using an 18mm lens on my D200 set at F8. If I adjust the focus ring to be at 2.04m, the hyperfocal distance for that configuration,
then everything from 1.02m to infinity is in acceptible focus.

Just have a go you may be impressed with the results

I agree, it is a total combination of how creatively one uses the whole combination of lens, F-stop, distance between object and camera. But ingeneral I think the photo should be sharp totally when we say "Deep DOF".

I looked at all the photos, and there are few goos landscapes/seascapes, architecture and still life shots. especially some instrumental one, very sharp and details.

Same here. Was sitting @ 6+ not too long ago. Then four 2s (how unusual) with a few 5s thrown in and now:

Slowly going down from 6.8 ... it was too crazy for my third challenge.

DPC is addictive ... I have to think straight and twisted.

I had 6.2, and all my comments are about how nice my photo is, but I keep dropping. I had hopes of climbing back up to 6.

Been slowly dropping and now it seems to be going up again. This one might be a yo-yo.

The retaliation votes seem to have subsided. But, 0.5000 down in the last 24 hours.

Arrgghh in free fall now. Was above 7.0 at 50 votes but since then have been going in the wrong direction. This was my first attempt at using hyperfocal distance, I have to confess I didn't even know what it was until last week!. I am still amazed at how much there is to learn.
09/24/2009 03:38:38 PM · #95
Well, if you are at 6.77 in a "freefall", I'd say you learned pretty good!

It really stinks when the only scores that really help you are 8s, 9s, and 10s. We all feel for you...

I've got to post this now before it drops below the magic number. I expect the eventual winners to be in the high 7s in this challenge. There are some great images.

My pic can't decide if it wants to stay at 6.2 or 5.8, so this is where it is sitting currently :
