I also recieved a comment from Teafran and have recieved a couple previously. Of course, I was pleased to receive such a details comment. However, when speaking with some collegues who are also here on DPC and the comments they recieved, two had identical comments. In looking back through some of the comments Tom has made, the same few comments seemed to be repeated on a large number of entries as if they were cut and paste.
I encourage commenting, and try to comment when I can, however, to find that the comments being raved about were cut and paste and applied to a wide number of different photos did cheapen it a bit for me..............
just my opinion, of course you guys can all disagree with me if you feel............
It is a scores thread, so

Yes , I have seen the same comment on another fellow Singapore DPC'r but I have no issues with this as the same can be applicable to another image. So I am not taking anything away from Tom Teafran, I still think he is doing a great job. This is my own personal opinion of course. |

agreed. I have never been sorry to receive a comment from him, even having read virtually the same comment on other's photos. In fact, however he does it, I always feel that his comments are insightful and to the point about "my" entry. That's what counts for me. |

It is interesting. Cut and paste comments have created some havoc for a user or two here in the past. |

I just received a wonderful comment from Teafran - I have no idea if it is the same as any others, but I'm sure he wouldn't say the same thing for another shot unless he meant it. He goes into great depth and shows that he has considered the image carefully. Whether he chooses two or three images that he has similar feelings about is his business, at least he's giving great comments. We shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth, and be grateful that he's commenting at all. Its not an English competition, lol. Thanks Teafran! |

The key to writing a good cut and paste comment template is the same as writing horoscopes... keep it general enough, but not too general. |

I just received a comment from Teafran that pretty much nailed my entry and helped me to complete my very own journey on the DPC Circle of Grief which had been a long and painful one until that point :) His observations which I felt were spot on really helped me to put my entry into perspective. Thank you Tom.
I have also noticed the duplication in some of Tom's comments, however, with hundreds of entries in any single challenge it is near impossible to comment entirely uniquely and with such quality and insight on each entry. In my experience, where it warrants it or it is possible to do so Tom makes a comment that is considered and specific to an image, a personal example of which would be on my Nightmare entry. If however a more generic comment is perhaps more appropriate it seems a cut and paste comment is used. Even these more generic comments are well thought out and clearly consideration has always been given to the image and which comment to apply. It should also be pointed out that Teafran will often do a second or even 3rd pass to reappraise images. That in itself is a massive undertaking.
As a photographic community we should be encouraging people to make well thought through and considered, constructive and helpful comments. In many ways it is as much an essential part of the community as the photographs themselves. The process of making considered comments on hundreds of images is a massive task and should be encouraged and acknowledged. As such I'd like to offer Tom the DPC Comments Legend blue ribbon for his contribution to this community. Thanks Tom.
also having just had my first K10DGuy comment :) I'd like to offer one to him too. Thanks for your valued contribution to the community.
I hope people don't mind this act of spontaneous recognition. Thanks, Paul.

As stated before, I second TallPaul's thoughts - its a great idea to offer the comments legend awards Paul, well done! Hopefully it will entice more people to comment constructively, rather than just to meet a 100% comments award for the sake of it. The comments that we all receive make as much of a difference to us all as the scoring - possibly more. We're all sitting here wondering if anyone likes our work, and if we place in anything other than the top 10 and receive no comments, how are we to improve? The odd pat on the back is definitely encouraging, and well considered advice should be welcomed. |

You are absoutely correct - I do duplicate comments on images that are just routine and I will reuse comments on more outstanding images - there are only so many ways to say "This really sucks" and be nice about it and "HOLY MOLEY - THIS IS BRILLIANT".
It's the ones in the middle that I spend more time on offering whatever I can in terms of how I feel about the images. The middle ranked images need the most attention and time because if an idea is just shy of being executed in my opinion, it's worth the time to offer a creative comment as it satisfies both the commenter's need to express an opinion and the photographers need to have a critique.
It's a perfectly valid way to offer commentary when faced with 435 images to rate and comment on and while not often done at the local or state level club competitions it is done at the national level in several venues. If you've ever sat in on a magazine photo shoot evaluation, you'd know exactly what I'm talking about.
With respect to being "cheated" or feel that somehow the commentary is "cheapened", look at it from the perspective of the viewer. Exactly how many grayscale images with single color highlights can you view without getting bored with the technique? How many cityscapes with lights reflecting on water can you view, even if technically and artistically excellant, without saying "not another one"? And flower shots galore. Would it be fair to say that the whole "cheated" and "cheapened" works both ways?
So far, this technique has worked. I recieve personal messages about specific images and they always ask what I meant by this or that. In that instance, I can offer more personal and detailed opinions and advice based on my experience and knowledge.
I'm the first one to admit that I'm not the be all and end all of photographic knowledge and that my opinion is exactly that - my opinion - you may take it or leave it. The fact that some opinions are repeated is a direct reflection on the nature of viewing, rating and commenting on many similar concepts and styles.
Please understand that I'm not being defensive here, just explaining how I view this particular commenting (or lack thereof) issue.
If there is one thing I've learned over 63 years of living on this planet is that you can't please every one all the time. I'm sorry that you felt "cheated" and that the commentary was "cheapened" by reuse on certain occasions - I apologise to you personally for that, but that does not mean that I will stop using that particular technique when I feel the need for it.
Later,
Tom
PS: Just thought of something that you might be interested in. Even using cut and paste on some images, it took exactly 15 hours, 17 minutes to rate and comment on this particular challenge over three days. That has to be some kind of record. :>)
PPS: Sorry for the length of this reply - I sometimes tend to ramble on and I try to resist that tendency at every opportunity. Remind me to tell you the story about my dissertation sometime - it's classic and very funny.
Later,
Tom

I'm humbled and honored by this gesture and appreciate it very much. It certainly wasn't necessary as I really enjoy my time here and am having a good time reviewing the imagery of many very good photographers.
Thank you.

You have rated 434 of 435 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 434 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 7.9654.
And my entry?

It did hit 5.1 something at one point which was pleasing to me. My imagery isn't to everyone's taste and I understand that.
Later,
Tom
PS: And no, the single comment I received wasn't one of my own. :>) Thanks to jstrong for the very kind comment. |

no good deed goes unpunished, eh guys? of course he has to repeat himself, a lot of the images look the same and can benefit from the same advice.
i fully appreciate every comment i receive, except for one that compared a lighthouse to a sex toy and one that was just a "~" both of which weren't really very helpful. i think it's great that Tom takes the time to comment. I also try not to just praise just him in the scores threads because that might hurt the feelings of my other commenters. If people feel unappreciated, they'll stop going the extra mile. Then you're left with one guy to comment everything and that's not quite as beneficial, even if the other comments aren't as in depth or what you want to hear.

Hm. 15 hours in 3 days is pretty amazing. I put in over 30 hours for the 100 comments I did on the 1000th challenge, but over the whole week. |

Once again I have had a comment from Teafran and there was no way it was a cut and paste.
Tom's comments are very astute, reading them and then looking at your photo, you can see exactly what him means and often have to agree that he is on the money. So, Tom, thanks for another comment that makes an awful lot of sense, and was a pleasure to receive and read:))
