Im with you K10DGuy...its a gimmick....and all this global warming is just money making nonsense.
its just another brain washing tactic by all the goverments of the world to control people and put fear in to us all.
Here in Australia we are slowly banning the light globe and replacing them with long life bulbs which cost 20 times more are so much more harmful to the environment than the classic bulb as so much mercury will be miss placed into the earth...ive heard in New Zealand they are going back the other way because of this.
The other mth when these we had theses bushfires in Victoria that killed 210 people some dickhead(excuse my lauguge) so called doctor of the environment was blaming "GLOBEL WARMING" for the fires and that future generations are going to look back on us with disgust and shake there fists are us...this guy was going off his nut and so serious...the news reader wasnt expecting it at all...how can a guy lighting fires be globel warming fault?..and OMG BUSHFIRES HAVE HAPPENED EVERY YEAR FOR CENTURIES!!!!!!!!!!
the bush needs to go through this cycle to regerminate...its just nature..if it wasnt a guy lighting the fires...god will just send some lighting to do the job...im not saying its ok to light fires and it was a disaster what happen but bushfires have to happen.
and last night this guy on TV goes (this is classic crap) we are going to see more floods more droughts more cold weather and more heat waves and more cyclones....what the?
ummm ok ummmmmm he just covered all bases and if one happens....it will be like I told you it was going to happen....its just so funny.
One thing i really think people do not understand is this...the earth is living just like humans...if we get cold...we put something on...if we get hot....we take something off...its called ajusting...the earth for millions of years has ajusted to what every has happened..what the Arctic shelf is melting....really.....excuse me but isnt it summer....some years it will melt more than other and some years it wont...its like when i went to this glacier in New Zealand...at the time it was the fastest moving in the world at 1 Meter per day...i went back about a year ago...it had reteated more than 1 km from where i saw it...people were saying...its GLOBEL WARMING fault....it takes 10years from when the snow drops on the mountains to make an impact at the face to the glaciers....its nearly back at were i was it at school.
ok...ive just about had enough but couple more points...
Vocanoes pump out 10,000,000,000,000,000 more harmful gases into the earth atmosphere than humans will ever be able to in the earths lifetime...WOW...how we going to stop them? got a cork anyone...first thing i said to my little girl at birth was...im really "sorry for bringing you into suck a screwed up world"..it really makes me sad that shes going to have to put up with all this crap more than i ever will.
Last thing....it like the financial crisis...just the goverments pumping fear into the world and keeping everone in control and business now have more excuses to make more proffits and saying we have to sack 1500 staff and the financial crisis is to balme...yep these companys are still making Billions of $$$$ a year..lol...its classic..like in Australia this company Pacific Brand scaked 1500 staff to move all operation over to china or were every saying they cant afford to keep it open as people dont want to buy Australia made...ok this company makes Bonds for target and yacka clothing which are big here....so now its china made....are they going to drop the cost of there clothes?..i mean they pay the people in china $600 less a week than the Australians...so ..now instead of being made here...we pay the same price for them to be made over seas and they make more proffit...doent make sence.
IF EVERYONE CARRIED ON LIKE NOTHING HAD HAPPENED WITH THIS "FINANCIAL CRISIS" NOTHING WOULD HAVE CHANGED THE GOVERMENTS NOW HAVE MORE CONTROL.........WAKE UP PEOPLE!
arrrrrrrrrhhhhh that was fun....lol...not having ago at anyone...just my 25c

You unlock this door with the key of madness. Beyond it is another dimension: a dimension of vitriol, a dimension of ignorance, a dimension of hurt feelings. You're moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of absurdities and out of context opinions. You've just crossed over into.... THE RANT ZONE.

I was going to take a picture of earth hour, but realized my camera uses electricity. I thought I would use my old Canon A-1 instead, but even it would not work without the battery.

I didn't want to be a hypocrite so I didn't plan to take a picture. But then friends came over, and had we turned off the refrigerator the beer would have gotten warm. So since we were going to be hypocrites after all, we watched satellite TV. There on Nat Geo we were told that we are heading into another ice age, that the earth is cooler than it was 5,000 years ago. Supposedly the wobble of the planet and the orbit and all... In any event, it almost seems like either one of the two camps is wrong, or we should be thankful for global warming.

All I know is, it is supposed to snow tonight.

My two youngest boys and I participated in Earth Hour. We lit some candles, turned everything off, talked about environmental issues on a 9 and 10 year-old level, then played hide and seek in the dark house for an hour. When it was over, my youngest asked if we could leave the lights off for just a little bit longer. He may not care about the environmental impact of Earth Hour, but he had enough good old fashioned fun to want it to last longer. I think my kids are pretty smart fellas. ;)

Here's the Las Vegas Strip before and during Earth Hour:

ETA: Each image is a stack of multiple frames. The exposure parameters for each image is the same.

Some of us here in Alaska celebrated too - we blocked out the sun 90 minutes before sun down .... now that has to do something to help global warming right? The ash fall from Mt.Redoubt completely overtook my beautiful blue sunny sky within 20 minutes....then it dropped ash on us :(

Cool pics!

Wow, I had no idea that turning off your lights for an hour would be so controversial ;)

Here's my take: Is it a gimmick?? Yes! Does it help the earth?? Not really!

But does it hurt? Absolutely not.

For me, it was really nice to take an hour and get away from the computers/TVs/ipods/cell phones/etc. and spend some quality time with people and have real conversations without these ubiquitous electronic distractions. Nine of us got together to participate last night. We lit candles and played card games and ended up doing it for three hours instead of one because the time flew and we were having such a good time. It was also a bit nostalgic, like being a kid in a thunder storm again. I'm sure that other families who participated also enjoyed a bit of bonding time. I think that's the best part of unplugging for an hour. Just my two cents.

One more to add, this group of people where playing music, and dancing between Planet Hollywood and the Paris. As the lights where coming back up, it was hugs, hand holding, and high 5̢۪s.

Good stuff Alan!
BTW, I was at the far west end of the pedestrian walk between NYNY and MGM. I set up a tripod just at the corner of the walkway where there was no fence to interfere.

LOL, by my guess about 20 feet away from where I was..

It would make a much better satellite picture if during Earth hour everyone made an extra effort to turn on every light inside & outside the house, turn up the heat, turn on every electrical or electronic device, etc. A Use Every Outlet Hour, & bench test the grid, so to speak. "D

Yep, that seems about right!
With the crowd there, it was pretty difficult to spot the folks who were more than casual observers. I was pretty focused on making sure my tripod didn't get bumped, since I had the legs set very narrow and I wanted to keep my framing constant. By the time I pulled up stakes you were probably down on the street.
Are you still in Vegas? I'm here through Thursday. PM me if you want to get together for a beer.

My wife and I went to a park west of downtown Calgary. Not really any noticeable difference. Actually I did have trouble seeing the buildings downtown...mainly because of the friggin' blizzard that was coming in.

Finally back home and had time to work on a little time lapse:

This is 80 frames consisting of 69 photos plus a fade-out and fade-in on the loop. Edited and animated at full resolution in Photoshop CS4 (81 layers, 1.1GB file).

ETA: While this is loading it will be a little jerkier and slower than when it's fully loaded. It's an 8MB file.

Nice job Fritz. Nice and smooth.

ETA: I have been thinking about the concept of earth hour in places like Vegas. Although it is mostly to get a point across that we as a whole need to conserve energy and resources, But in Vegas this probably costed the city double what it would cost to keep the lights on. The extra energy used to re-light everything was probably a bit more than what would have been used had they left lights on or even dimmed them. Then you have to think about all the extra police officers and security personal that were required on the strip during this time frame. A dark Vegas Strip full of people is heaven for pickpockets etc... However a swell in tourist to witness the event probably offsets the balance in the long run.

That̢۪s cool Fritz, I like how you faded it to black to make up for the morons on the right. We made a note of the businesses that failed to participate and no longer support them. Yes I know the entire exercise was nothing short of symbolic, but we back up our feelings with efforts to cut down significantly on power usage, recycle, we also purchased reusable shopping bags.
I have a grandchild on the way, someday I wish to take him-her to the grand canyon and be able to see the other side..

The big issue I see (apart from the power grid been blown up if everyone did it).... It lets people delude themselves into thinking they have done something and then go back to the same old ways..... Makes for some cool photos, so that is worth it :-)
