For those who had a bit of fun with the sub-5 FS bit, if you want comments on your shot, post here.
I know why mine scored poorly - the only way I could have received a better score was to submit something else, so I'm not in need of any critique. I'm not disappointed with my score (7th worst of all time - quite the accomplishment for a FS where you can't get DNMC and having over 270 entries thus far!) but I'll admit I did want to make a few people smile at least and based on the feedback, that didn't happen. Ah well. It was worth a try!
Post away - I promise to provide feedback on all shots posted in this thread. (And yes, I'll comment on sub-5.4 shots as well, even though you didn't fall into the club.) |

This was your shot, scoring 4.6
I gave it a 7, but like you I know why it didn't score higher overall ... it's because too many people have a preconceived idea of what's good, especially when it comes to portraits. But what I wonder is why? Why limit yourself to one interpretation of the portrait? Why not let your imagination (if any) off the leash? The world doesn't really need one more oversaturated, oversmoothed, overprocessed portrait with overpimped eyes. Why not at least admit the possibility of another point of view? Just occasionally?
This was my shot, scoring 4.8
It was not intended to score any higher. I was hoping for about 4.5-4.9 and my wish was granted. I wanted to try for a shot that would have a strong appeal to a very limited audience and it achieved exactly that; a big kick in the 10s and for a bonus a DeadGuy red award. So I was in your sub-5 club and delighted to be there.

my FS entry ended up at 5.08 ... one of my worst scores also ... I'd really love to know why it scored so low ... I understand that it's not DPC eye candy, I understand that this was a candid shot and those typically don't do well ... I didn't expect a score above 6.0 ... but surely didn't expect a 5.0 either!

I honestly don't think 5.08 is a low score. It's an average score but it's not low. Maybe your expectations are higher than mine at this point but I surely wouldn't complain about a score over 5. I'm also very new here so I am still learning. When I score a photo I start with a score of 5 and work from there. The first thing I think about is: does it strike any emotion in me? Then I look into the details. If a photo doesn't strike any emotion in me then it won't score more than a 5 or 6. I didn't score your photo but if I did, I probably would have scored it a 4. Now if it was contributed in a different challange it's score may have changed to a 5 or a 6 but probably not any higher because it did nothing for me.
As for mine, I went in with no expectations. I know why it scored low and I know things I could have done to improve it. At the time it was only my second entry and I had never played around with photoshop that much up until then. Looking back I may not even had submitted that shot. Yeah well.....live and learn.

Not my own entry, but I really think this one makes some strong social commentary and deserves some more feedback. I was surprised that nobody got the message out of it that I did.
My own entry was a boring but decent shot that scored an expected low 5. |

I suspect my choice of title affected the score, which was rather lower than I had hoped at 4.7000.
Although I recognize many reasons that this would not be in the top 1/3 of a free study, I was sad to see it come in at only the 7th percentile. I entered some thoughts in the "Photographer's Comments" field.

You know, in an odd way, they make a nice set. :-) |

Still a bit confused by this...the funny thing is that all of the comments I received were positive ones. I did get a PM saying that it wasn't too DPC-friendly because there is so much going on in it and so far I think that is the only explanation that makes sense.

A disappointing 4.7815 for this one. I tell myself it might have done better in a different challenge, but I wonder. But unlike some of my other low-scoring photos, I still like this one.

I'm cool with mine because I already knew going in that not a lot of folk like motion blur, or blur in general. That's perfectly okay! I'd still like the opportunity to keep torturing you all with them ;) |

No offense pamelasue, but I have no idea how your photo out scored mine. My submission was called "Surface to Sky". Can someone tell me how what seemed to be a snap shot out scored my pic? I mean, half his head is gone.... I don't know what the hell is going on here? Am I over-reacting? At least Pamelasue realized "I understand that this was a candid shot and those typically don't do well ..." I am a little confused, or just a really bad photographer... It must be the latter.... |

I re-read my post and it sounds pretty damned self absorbed... I am new to photography, so I don't expect to be in the 6's or even the high 5's, I just wish someone would tell me what was wrong with my submission... |

Whew! Thank goodness you outscored me! Mine was seriously a snapshot.... :-)
Note the smiley face - said with a bit of humor, but it does bring up a point... I *like* snapshots. Well, I like snapshots when they have a story to tell, a memory to keep. Isn't that a big part of what photography is or can be? A memory to capture, at one single moment in time, to keep? Anyway, that's my rant for the day. I shall comment on the shots posted here in a bit.
Oh, wait. I just realized I have one more bit of a rant - there are two things that can be asked here: why did my submission score so low, and what is wrong with my submission? I would offer that the answers can be very different. |
