A lady (Ellen) who is an acqaintance of mine and whom I know from another photo site and who is not a member on DpChallenge entered this black and white photo on this other photosite. When I saw it I immediately had to think about the Ansel Adams challenge here and I thought that if she had been a member here and had entered this shot it would have scored very well. What do you think? She titled it "Storm Waters"
(Photo removed at photographers request after consult) Thanks for looking.
Ps. I gave her the link to this page so please do leave your comments here for her to see.

I think it's time she became a member here. |

True.
9/10. I find the frontsides of the smaller stones to be a tad dark. |

For me, 6.
While the tones are nice and there's some pleasing lines, it just doesn't speak to me, and I require a photo to speak to me. |

No offense to anyone but I voted on the Ansel Adams challenge and it was one of the most boring challenges I have ever voted on. I would have given this a 10. |

Yeah I agree Karen I was underwhelmed, either his style is very difficult to replicate or people just don't 'get it'. But this photo would fit very nicely. |

I've not voted yet but I know I was struggling to get anywhere near his style! I'd barely heard of Ansel Adams before this challenge and my research was brief from looking at the previous challenge and some of his images. I had a couple of hours to try to shoot for the challenge so no chance to re-shoot, b&w is a completely new concept for me to try to comprehend ... I do have a new appreciation for b&w photography I think and I want to learn more about his zone system .... so whilst my entry isn't the best I've learnt something :)
Back on topic (!!), that shot is awesome, it certainly has a "wow" factor for me, my only minor criticism is it's a little dark |

Thanks .... I probably shouldn't admit it was a sheer fluke .... I took the shot I wanted but it just didn't look right, the missus suggested converting to b&w which looked so much better! |

You might want to retitle the image with her name added, "Storm Waters by Marge Simpson", whatever. Rigt now it looks like it's your work...

I agree. There are a select few images that I think are really outstanding. However, the majority of the images seem to have been snapshots taken with a camera phone and converted to B/W. I also noticed the number of photos that are in sepia tone or include a subject that I don't think Ansel would have taken a photo of. But thats just IMO. |

To say that the "majority" seem to have been shot with a camera phone is pretty silly :-P... There are quite a few shots that seem fairly murky, but that's normal in open challenges regardless of topic, besides which conversion to B/W by simply desaturating is a pretty good recipe for how to make an image look blah, and a lot of people may not have been exposed to the finer points of serious B/W conversion in editing software.
I'd personally agree that Sepia toning is not "in the style" of Ansel Adams, but I'd vehemently argue that subject matter is (or ought to be) irrelevant in this challenge. Adams' style is a matter of light and superior B/W technique and studpendous DOF. It's true that he's most famous for his iconic wilderness landscapes, but I assure you that in a long and productive career he photographed just about everything; he did still lifes, he did portraits, he did architecture, he did documentary photography, he did it all.

Bear you are correct. I should have worded my comment better. After looking again, the 'Majority' of the images are very well done. And theres a select group that I don't think got the capture or the processing right. But really who am I to say?
As for what AA photographed, I am certain you are quite right - he probably photographed everything under the sun. So, I guess this challenge (like every challenge) really comes down to what the voter thinks AA's 'Style' was. Was his style any B/W photo? Was his style landscapes? People? Everyone will have a different opinion. |

Have a look at this link to see some of the diverse stuff he photographed. Like the transmission lines at Boulder Dam for instance

Now I know why mine is hovering around 5.2x. It's boring and I have no clue on how to convert to B&W. But what the heck, it's just a bit lower than my prediction of 5.5x.
But on the other hand, I think there is some nice stuff in this challenge. I gave out quite a few 9's and 10's.
