I put a lot of effort into my entry and I don't really care what my vote is because I'm happy with what I did.
What i would like to know though, is how to vote. I have voted, recently, on a couple of challenges (only one that I participated in, and with a bad entry at that) but will admit that I didn't really know where to start.
For this free study challenge there are so many entries! I don't want to insult but I don't want to overdo either. Help please! |

Hi Penny!! Welcome!
There are many ways to vote... and people will all argue as to what is the best method.
The important thing is to find your own style, vote consistently on each image, and ignore what everyone else says. *grin*
Except me. *grin even wider*
I'm just kidding about the 'me' part... but to help you out, because I had no clue at the start, either... here's how I vote.
If it meets the challenge topic, is in focus and tolerably composed, I give it a 5. That's where I start.
If it's off topic and exceedingly wonderful, I'd give it a 6 tops.
If it's on topic, and better than just 'average' but not yet 'wonderful'... I'll give it a 6 or a 7.
Eights are for stuff that really wows me... but is not technically wonderful... still I'm moved.
Nines are for stuff that wows me... is really good... but's not perfect.
Tens are for the ultimate in wonderful... technically, emotionally, and every way.
That's my voting system... there are many threads totally about how to vote.
I rarely give below a 4.

thanks Lydia. That's kind of what I thought. But, if I really don't think a photo is "up to snuff" should I just pass over it and not vote? Or should I look at it as though every photo, if it's entered at all, has had effort put in and deserves a vote not lower than 3 or 4? (I guess that's what you're suggesting as I can see you gave an average score of 5.7022 for all these images).
I appreciate your advice (or anybody else's for that matter). Thanks. |

Many different approaches work. Here are some of the things that cross my mind when I vote:
a. Mid point from one to ten is 5.5, so it is impossible to vote "average". (Many people miss this, thinking 5.0 is half way to ten - it is but only if you start from zero, which is not part of the scale).
b. I try to evaluate images on multiple dimensions. The importance of a dimension varies from challenge to challenge and sometimes from image to image. Technical (sharp if it supposed to be sharp, exposure fits intent, good choice of depth of field, nice dynamic range, color handled well, post processing appropriate not oversharpened, ...); Design features (figure and ground, balance, rhythm, dynamic tension, pattern, texture, perspective, depth, color relationships); Content (clarity, ambiguity, humor, simplicity, complexity, style, emotin, story, ...); Wow factor (general impact on me where I am now, would I put this up on the walls to look at over and over).
c. Then, for topic challenges, I may add or subtract a point or two for meeting or not meeting the challenge title and detaied instructions. Notice that some people feel justified in giving a 1 if the image doesn't meet the challenge. Search on "DNMC" for endless threads on that controversy.
d. Make the mechanics easier. Many people use a "sorting" approach. Go through all the entries and make an initial decision: slightly lower (1-5) or slightly higher (6-10) and initially give out 5's or 6's. The result page then lets you concentrate on one group at a time. In the slightly higher group, I thenk look harder at the various scale elements, check out the horizons and edges and distractions as well, then move the better 6's up into 7's and 8's. Back to the 5's, move some down to 4, a very few lower scores. Then it is easier to refine the 7's and 8's to move the best up to 9 and the perfect up to 10. After doing the sorting approach a while, it gets easier to do more of the categorization in the first pass.
e. Commenting helps me look closer at the pictures and figure out more specifically what works and what doesn't work in an image. That sharpens my voting and helps me with my own photography too.
Sorry for being long winded. Hope that helps. Search on "voting" for more than you'll ever have time to read. Your profile page displays the average vote you have given over all voting. If that is down in the 3's or lower, or in the 7's or higher, you might want to recalibrate yourself. In the end, if your voting is consistent, you won't hurt the relative ranking of anyone, even though you'll have a tiny effect on their final average score.
-edited to remove duplicated words.

One way to look at voting in challenges is to use the scale as it is provided to us: where 1 is a bad image and 10 is a good image.
corrected typo...

Thanks bob and bassbone for your suggestions. I do like the idea of dividing the entries into above or below the midpoint first, especially when there are so many. And, like I said, I'm not sure "bad" can be applied to any entry that one has spent time on. I'll give this a little more thought and then get moving... |

Whew, Deb. Finallly swallowed the whole enchilada:
You have rated 415 of 416 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 5.8602.
Lots of good entries. Mostly followed my own advice to Penny.
Penny: Forgot to say welcome to DPC, and to mention that I use the sorting approach with a mental picture of the caliper of image that fits into each and not as a voting on the "curve" where some have to fail and some have to go to the top. When a challenge has more great entries, I give more high scores. |

worth having a look at this guide. As others have said there are many different opinions on voting :) If / When you find a photo that is not good in your opinion still give it the vote you feel it deserves, but if you have the time add a small comment on what you didn't like about it, constructive criticism is almost always well received. |

I'm about a third of the way through them, commenting on about a quarter of what I vote on.
What are the odds of getting the three "hooters" entries one after the other... ? (And I'm not referring to owls.) |

I'm halfway through voting, I vote all or nothing...and I have to say I am much more impressed with the images in this regular ol' FS than I am with what I saw in the Master's. Not much commenting, but maybe I'll go back after I've voted and add some. |

Thanks Deb for the motivation to get out and vote. It has been awhile since I've voted and I really enjoyed it. I must admit that this was a "speed" vote for me and I used absolutly no "standard" for voting...It was pure gut reaction :)
