2.72%, including 60% of all student financial aid and much of the safety oversight for our food supply. Congrats. |

What an elegant solution, we can all starve to death or die from contaminated foods and no one will be bright enough to figure it out.

Thanks. I thought it was a good idea. Actually, leave a little money for oversight but programs/entitlements like student financial aid leave that up to the states to fund. Problem continues to be solved.

Yep, no way to solve a problem than to push it off onto someone else.

I found an interesting comment here;
I think you guys here are no fun to argue with as I agree with most of your conservative, hummer driving, gun toting, liberal bashing views. I go to liberal threads and stir the pot. Preferably international liberal threads where the lefty atheist gay Obama supporting socialist outnumber us conservatives. One needs a thick skin in there.

Nope. The buck stops at the federal level when it's a federal issue (ex. oversight). The buck stop at the state level when it's a state issue (ex. state school tutition).

And that would solve the problem how? By making states raise taxes to fund financial aid? How does that do anything but make things even more complicated and convoluted?
Yeah...good plan. |

In my opinion, NPR is the most neutral one I have read/heard. |
NPR always seems to have a bit of a granola bias when I listen to it. BBC does a reasonable job of being neutral/ right of center for Europe, probably slightly left of center for the US, given that the US is about the most right wing country around at the moment, the notion of 'neutral' is always going to look left wing to a majority of Americans. Compared to most other countries, the Democratic platform is a right wing platform. It's been said as a joke before, but reality does seem to have a liberal bias.
ETA: I suppose Austria is probably more right wing of the Western countries. Not many others come to mind.

Well, seeing how highly he regards people with opinions, I suppose he can be pretty much considered a "net kook" and ignored now. |

Speaking of trimming government spending, y'all realize that if "W" lives as long as his dad, we'll be paying him almost $200,000 per year for another forty years ....
"Retired presidents now receive a pension based on the salary of the current administration's cabinet secretaries (Executive Level I), which is $191,300 as of 2008."
I'm just thrilled at this absolutely vital use of my taxes. Now, let's talk about lazy poor people who want a government handout ...

Because I just started posting in this thread so it's not so hard to do? Trust me if you saw the first one, the second one, etc., you wouldn't be taking this so seriously.
ETA: Hint it started with a reply to a DrAchoo post.

I think that's a pretty clear indicator why this entire debate/discussion is so f#@$*ed-up.
40% approval rate...huh?
There's also like a bunch of polls that say 25% of Americans think the country is ok and going in the right direction. I assume they are the exact same group that approve of Bush.
Who are they? Where do they live? Are they on medication? Were they deprived of air at birth? Is it safe to meet them? What type of foods do they consume? Are they allowed to drive?
As David Brooks (NYT Right Wing columnists) said "people love their lies..."

I'll second this. I'm fairly sure NPR has some liberal bias. If not in the reporting, then in the selection of stories to report. What they do a good job of is avoiding editorializing which joke news stations like FOX and MSNBC do all the time.
I've wondered if my drifting to the left has to do with listening to NPR. Seriously.

I prefer to broaden my perspective on events by looking internationally as well, usually to the CBC, BBC and Le Monde in addition to domestic sources. One of the interesting things I've noticed is that very often, foreigners are much more informed on US politics than Americans. |

Yeah, I've noticed that, too. You always get a better perspective on anything from the outside looking in. Not nearly as many emotions getting in the way. |
