Just finished scoring and I have noticed that there are some "really good" basic editors on this site.
Maybe its just me. I haven't learned how to use all the tricks in basic yet.

I didn't enter this challenge and when I went to vote I thought "am I missing something here?" Being relatively inactive on DPC I figured there was something amiss with all the outdoor and/or non-living shots. Okay, I get the pet portrait situation - done it myself. But the other stuff? Glad I'm not in this one. Best to you all who followed the rules and intent of the challenge.

Those people who clearly don't read the challenge description (or even the challenge title, I sometimes think) always end up at the bottom of the pile anyways. Maybe they're actively trying for the brown, for some reason.

I gotta admit, I gave out lower scores for chopped off heads. Just a personal preference I guess, so sorry chopped off heads people.
Cropping the top of the head (typically above the eyebrows or halfway through the hair) is a common technique of classic portrait photography. You'll find many examples in the portfolio of Librodo (quite possibly DPC's top portrait photographer) and among the highest rated photos.
True, but cropping off just the top 3 or 4 hairs is not a recognized technique
I find this topic really interesting because composition is one of my favorite parts of photography (sorry i'm a little behind in commenting on it).. I think you can get draw someone in more with a crop that does cut off the head and it can create a more intriguing shot - you just have to do it right and make it look like it's intentional (a really good photog on this site told me that once and it's in my head all the time as I shoot). So I tend to do it in a lot of my shots.. I don't think scoring someone based on that alone makes sense. If it looks bad.. sure. But if it's done right it should improve a shot. Next time you're watching a movie take note of how many heads are cut off. Bet you see a lot.

Personally I don't mind artful cropping-off-the-top-of-the-head; it's the artful half-a-face out of the left or right border I can't stand.

my goal was to beat my last portrait challenge. I figure I have a while to go before I get past my personal best for travel photography.. but I couldn't be happier watching this score keep rising! |

Someone just filled me in on the brown ribbon so it is making more sense now :-) |

I guess some people feel a last place ribbon is better than no ribbon at all!

Grrrr.......
I'm SO kicking myself right now. I have a shot that I specifically thought about, planned for (in my obscure way) and managed to get kinda close to what I had in mind, and I didn't enter it because I knew it would score poorly. Had I known the one I DID enter would be a low-5'er, I'd definitely have entered my non-DPC friendly but very deliberately captured for this challenge shot. All my current consultants are hereby fired! (That would be you guys on Team Germany!) :-) |
I stopped asking for advice about shots I'm interested in entering. I always enter the wrong one, so no more asking for advice on which to enter, I'll go with my own instincts and learn from my mistakes, not others. I have 3 or 4 shots from past challenges that would have scored higher then the ones I actually entered. grrr is right! |

That would be a personal take on it. As for me, if I ever get one I'll hang up my skates camera. |

I'm in the same boat. I entered what I thought was the more DPC friendly shot and sitting with a 5.5x score. The one I wanted to enter was vetoed by my model. And I just got a comment today that pointed out the one thing bugging me the most about it (the entry). Grrrr.......

I wouldn't have to wonder about that sentence, if your average vote cast was a little higher :-/ |

Woah, you just pointed the big finger at yourself by stating that. rofl
Is your opinion more important than mine? Sure looks like it by your attitude. Must be an old age thing... |

my opinion is that the people who voted my photo a 1-9 are mistaken. VERY MISTAKEN. it is clearly a 10. this is a fact.
