does the IR light not work the same way as normal light in terms of dynamic range?

I'm no guru and I don't know if this qualifies but here's my attempt at IR HDR from my previous posted image.

Here's the tail end of Ike as it leaves the heartland. We had it pretty easy compared to Texas. Got here about 4:30 CDT, packing gusts up to 60 mph. Some damage around town, but outside of a couple of trees into roofs, and one guy's new red truck under a fallen tree, not bad. No flooding or any of that. By noon the clouds had parted and just bands of clouds here and there.

IR Sunset. Not tried one of these before.

Glad to be seeing some more variations on IR shots. I myself have been trying to do different things- both with subject matter and with processing. One of the things I love about IR is that it encourages that.

In this case, an attempt at night IR. A simple, abstract of the swimming pool area in my complex. It was taken with a converted P&S camera which means that it does not have long shutter speeds so to get anything to come out, you have to increase the ISO- in this case to 800. That means more grain. I don't think this did that bad for a P&S at ISO 800 and I did not do any noise reduction on it (afraid of losing detail and turning even muddier). There is a small area of sharpness within the grain- the railngs and the bars you grab to climb out of the water.

Situations like this make me wish I had a DSLR converted, but I cannot afford that right now. The point for me is to keep trying it even in situations you may not think of as IR situations.

Water seems to go green sometimes for me but the lights in the water also make it look blue/ green in visible light.

That's funny. Whenever I think about something I end up seeing it here. First it happened with the IR HDR and now the nighttime IR.

I would say it definitely doesn't work the same way - but on the other hand some pretty cool effects can be obtained when tonemapping an infrared shot. I've got two IR HDR shots that I really like (taken a while back):

Cheers!

Beautiful stuff here kids! I'm impressed!
I see some 40Ds playing...anything special you have to do to the 40D besides the filter to do this stuff? Can someone kindly pm? ;)

Sorry to hijack.

The whole point of the side challenge is to share, inspire, and learn. Questions are welcomed and encouraged. My camera is specifically converted to shoot in infrared so I do not have any experience with trying to use filters and a DSLR. The original thread announcing the Side Challenge is here //www.dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREAD_ID=815018 and there were some good links posted on the second page of it which may have some information for you.

The general info I have read is to try to take a white balance on something green (like grass or trees)with the filter on and that the filter will use up a couple of stops worth of light so you will probably need a tripod and longer exposures. Experiment to see what works best for you.

I was working a lot this week but finally got out. My take on a basic flower shot.

Night Time Sleep Over on the Beach. But it is really day time. An example of how infrared can make a scene look completely different.

Another example of this would be my highest scoring image (and first blue ribbon!). It was also take on a sunny day- with a few clouds around, but the IR made it look like a dark and stormy day. The car in the corner with its lights on was a bonus. The "light" is the sun reflecting off of glass in the lighthouse tower and the "steam" was just a cloud.

This seems to be slowing down a bit. For those who would like to participate, but do not have anything current, the person who started the side challenge said you could use older images too. I was out to the speed boat races on Mission Bay this past weekend. A point and shoot was not that great for the races due to the distance, but I still tried. This one has some crop to bring me in closer and remove a bit of fence from the foreground.

This one I did a bit more work on to try to get a nice color I liked. I tossed most of my tools at it- channel mixer, hue/ sat, selective color- then masking some of the effects, along with a soft gausian blur on portions of the background and a little dodge/ burn. All were pretty subtle changes which added up.

slammed by work, sorry

I think I finally caught up with commenting, more or less, so now I feel less guilty about posting some more:
