 still not too fond of the crunchy look I seem to get out of all my IR landscapes - others' work seems so much more "clean" to me

but I like the clouds here; when I set this up I had thought that the 2 foreground trees might stand out better, but they didn't, really

You'd have to sit and wait for clouds to cast a shadow on the background trees in order to get the effect you wanted. Patience my dear, patience.
I don't mind the crunchies.
