There is a small group of us here at DPC who love IR photography, so it would be nice to get together and share some shots and different PP techniques. krnodil and I were talking about a possible IR side challenge for this September. We could do a 30 day challenge where you can post as many or as few of your shots during the month as you like, B&W or False Color, landscape or portrait(yes they are kind of cool) it doesn't matter as long as it's IR related. Post up if your interested and I'll add a list of names if we get a hand full. I'll try to PM this link to some of the known IR shooters out there. Trevor~

List so far:
trevytrev
krnodil

kinda redundant to say "I'm in" at this point, I guess, but I console myself that my post at least functions as a BUMP. :)

I'm in... had surgery yesterday on my dominant wrist...so the smaller camera I use for IR would be nice to shoot with right now.

I'd love too, but my D100 died and I sold my d70, so I'm not sure if the d300 and d60 are worthy. I haven't had time to test, but according to published reports the filter pack cuts off too much infrared. I would imagine they would work, but would probably require 10 second or longer exposures.

I am interested also...

I have updated the list so far. Hyperfocal, feel free to give it a whirl on those cameras and post if you like. I kind of signed you up Karen, hope you didn't mind:) A few more would be great!

I'll do it if someone would kindly explain to me how to change the white balance while using the Hoya filter lol. Judi's got a tutorial where she's able to change it so that there's less red in the photos but I just cannot get that to happen.

Sounds like a fun challenge!

The way i do it is to set a custom white balance with the IR filter on against sunlit grass or blue sky. This works on a nikon D50.

I will give it a go. I can't promise that my work schedule will let me do it everyday...but I will try.

Anyone want a camera they could convert to full time IR? :)

I'll see if I can get my D70 converted in time...

You might want to PM JeffryZ. He hasn't been very active lately, but he does some darn fine IR work.

A friend just loaned me his IR filter so I could definitely use this as an excuse to experiment more. Count me in!

I'm curious...are you all shooting with a converted DSLR or Photoshop conversion? Enlighten me!
08/23/2008 06:18:11 PM · #20
I think - correct me if I'm wrong, Trevor - what we have in mind is infrared shots achieved via either converted-to-IR camera or the use of IR lens filters. Usually IR shots do take a decent amount of post-processing to get it into acceptable shape. But taking an ordinary photo and then using Photoshop or similar to make it look like infrared isn't what we're going for.

My Sony F717 has a native IR mode. To shoot IR in daylight I do have to use an IR filter. (Sony opens the aperature all the way in IR mode to foil the creeps.)

I loved my Sony F717...but now have the F707. works the same way...put in nightvision mode, put on the hoya filter...and snap away..sometimes use a ND 4 or ND 8 just to help out if too bright outside. swap channels/add a gass-blur about 1-3% and flatten. Gives nice false color to the images...

I updated the list and If I'm missing someone let me know. As for the Faux IR created in PS or other editing software I agree with krnodil that we would prefer to stick to pics taken with an IR filter or converted camera.

OK, I'm in, I've been wanting to learn IR so I'll this as kick in the toosh.
