Your average vote cast is a 3.3 mate, I know what I call that... You claimed, and I quote "Guys, I am done voting on all the images. Some great work out there! I already have 2 new favorites from this pool.
"

Say no more squire. However, I am pleased you are happy.

I think I offended quite a few champs here;-)

No pun intended guys. Chill, and be open to criticism... There are many mastros here, and a single challenge cannot judge people. Besides, I am still new to this community. Just because I was tough on scores doesnt mean I do not intend to learn about the art. I would still say: chill and enjoy.. its fun!

I'm mostly frustrated that I entered a shot that I really liked, worked hard on getting the lighting how I wanted it and no-one else likes it lol - Dropped .12 in the last 9 votes and gone from 5.02 to 4.88 those scores are like DNMC scores bl**dy voters ;)

Yeah those ones kill me, the worst ones for me are when I nail one technically, and I get beat out by one that isn't very technically sound but it is "dpc friendly", those are frustrating, but typically I won't get too upset if its a shot that I'm proud of anyways.

Here's a suggestion.. When you vote a shot a 3 or lower, why don't you leave them some kind of comment to say WHY you feel this shot deserves a vote of 3... otherwise, my friend, it is a simple case of TROLLING and you do not want to get branded with that badge here.

I suggest you go through your LOW VOTES (not THAT many huh) and leave some helpful comment so they may LEARN what was so bad about their shot in your opinion..

off you go.

Sure thats a great suggestion, mate. I will start doing that now... hopefully I will finish by the time the voting ends.

Appreciate your advice!

At the risk of being yelled at here....I think it's kinda funny that as soon as someone gets a 1 or a 2, they scream 'troll!' Can't people comprehend that maybe their photo is only worth 1 or 2 to someone....?

I think I've given maybe only one or two 1 scores since joining DPC and a veeery small amount of 2s (I really don't like voting under a 4 unless I think a pic is really poor) but any I have given or may give in the future doesn't make me a troll as far as I'm concerned; it quite simply just means I really didn't think much of the pic!

I got four 1s and sixteen 2s in the purple challenge and while it was disappointing, I didn't assume that my pic was so good that it was incomprehensible someone could give it a bottom-rung score without being a 'troll'.

Anyhoo, my average on the abstract challenge has gone up a teeny bit. I'll admit I was hoping for comments wondering what the heck my image is but oh well, plenty of time, hehe.

This is me not yelling.. but as an example, this photo got 2 ones. I'm thinking only trolls would rate this photo a one. Seriously.. c'mon!!

I wont yell, promise :)

I think the problem is that Prash was asking for comments to help him learn and better his photography etc (if I remember correctly anyway) and yet he has voted on 496 pictures with an average of 3.3 (only 20 comments made and 5 of those were on other challenges and all complimentary) that's some seriously low scoring and he is giving no indication why).

I think I vote a bit low myself sometimes and am setting about creating a proper structure to my voting pattern but even so I have made 298 votes and have an average of 5.10 (which should rise a little as I revise my scores over the next few days), I don't think anyone would call you a troll for voting a poor pic low after all that's what the voting is for, but to consistently low vote across a large number of votes whilst asking for help and guidance is a little ..... off maybe.

I don't think so. I think someone that is hands-down, completely, 100% fed up with the constant visibility of shots like this on DPC might vote it a 1 simply out of frustration or simple dislike.

Your tastes are going to be different from someone else's. It is wrong to automatically assume that their reasoning behind such a vote is simple discordance or evil intent.

Thank you for putting it there nicely, I really appreciate it from the bottom of my heart.

I figured what the issues were:

[1] I am new to this community
[2] This is the first challenge I ever participated in
[3] I ranked the best picture in this pool an 8, and everything else was relative to that, so a lot of 3s etc.

To correct my rating scale, I shifted and compressed all my scores (linearly) to be between 5 and 10 now. So now, the lowest score I rated was a 5.0. The top pictures to get best scores from me still remain the same, but the whole scale is shifted now. And no matter what, I will not change the top picture votes because that is one right I reserve as a voter. Here are the new stats:

You have rated 317 of 318 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 5.1640.

I hope this is more acceptable to the forum and the participants (I am one of them), and my sincere apologies to anyone who thought I was trolling. I had really put 2-3 hours rating the pictures, and I cannot explain the excitement I feel about DPC.

I just wish people were more mature (jeez), because my shifting the scales still doesnt change the relative rankings for the prospective winners in my eyes, and I am not going to change the winner anyways.

Fair enough, that was quite possibly a troll.

I appreciate you being willing to change and adapt to this, seeing as you are new here, I certainly appreciate you taking the time to vote on the whole challenge, I for one use the whole scale, I don't have a particular system for voting.

Typically if the shot is technically sound I won't give it less than a 5, even if it is bad, just because I see that they know how to do it, and they are certainly trying. If it is technically sound and phenomenal in other areas, I'll give it a 9 or a 10, and likely a fav., if it is not technically sound and lacks visual appeal, i'll give it the 1 or the 2, now of course there are exceptions, like the ones that aren't "technically" a good photo, but still has a lot of visual appeal.

Ok I have corrected my voting scale (just linearly shifted and stretched between 5 and 10).. it still doesnt change the winner in my eyes. If you understood Math, you would know that a plain shifting will not change the winner anyways, the relative scores will remain the same. I hope it suits you more now.

This would be the time that I will expect an acknowledgement of my efforts to correct a misunderstanding. I did that for each and every image, mate.

So much for a mature welcome of a new member, jeez!

Yes I conformed the voting scale as a whole, but not the relative scores in there. So the winner is still the winner in my eyes:-)

It is funny how people go for absolute scores and not relative skill set.

Thankies for not yelling :) I don't really have a voting system as such; I know what I like but I'm flexible. I only tend to vote low if a picture is A) too small/too grainy/too blurry to make out any details, B) very poorly composed, or C) really bad editing (too high saturation, too much contrast etc.) If a picture is ridiculously off criteria-wise then I'll chop a point or two off as well.

Ouch...

Guess this is a good learning experience.

This is a tough challenge, especially for someone still new to the challenges. What your image does here could be completely different when presented to an audience outside of DPC.

Smile and have fun! :-)

Bingo. Don't worry about it, Prash. Thanks for the time you put in, especially since you did it twice.

I wouldn't presume to tell someone how to vote. But since you're new, I would suggest spending some time thinking about the full voting scale. What would make you vote 10? What would make you vote 1? A 3/10 is a very low vote, so be sure you really think it's worth such a low score. A 9/10 is a very high vote, so make sure any 9s you give really impress you, move you, make you laugh, etc. But beyond that, vote as you like. As long as you're consistent, it doesn't change the rankings.

FWIW, I typically go like this. Again, you choose how you vote, but as a newbie, maybe this can be input for you as you settle into your own voting style.
10: blows me away. Usually means it connects emotionally, not necessarily being technically perfect
9: blows me away, but is just missing something to keep it from 10
8: very, very good. A shot I'd love to have taken
7: A clever take on the challenge, quite good technically
6: Solid. Exposed in a way I like, focus pleases me, subject and interpretation of challenge make sense (which isn't the same thing as "properly exposed, perfectly sharp, obviously fits challenge")
5: A 6 that didn't quite make the mark
4: Something that either is way outside any connection I can find to the challenge but is done decently well or something that's really not a good shot to me
3: Really poor execution
2: Barely worth looking at
1: Utterly unredeemable; I want the 5 seconds back it took me to hit 1

There are variations, of course. For example, sometimes if something makes me laugh, I'll vote it highly. Or if something hits me emotionally, or is a very unusual concept.

I don't get it. I'm happy with my score of course, but I see some excellent images out there, and hardly anyone is reporting higher than a six.

Nice start! You'll have to keep us posted at the 100 vote checkin. :-D

I don't know exactly what you mean by "mature" advice, but here's mine:

- You'll never please everyone

- Follow the rules of the site, but otherwise follow your heart.

- Learn, but try not to follow.

- Wear Sunscreen.
