At the risk of being a whiner, I repeat my question (asked by bergiekat as well): are we posting daily? Weekly? Whatever we feel like? Is this a side challenge? I want some parameters, damnit! :-)

You are required to post 5 pictures daily and comment 100%. I think this is called the "Larry Rule".
I'm going to try a pic a day. |

Sorry. Thought I said 100mm and since there aren't little notches you'll have to cut me some slack if I'm a silly mm longer ;)

Got you down. I see that you are the only registered owner of the 10mm. Would be interesting to see pictures from that lens. |

Well, I may be able to compete on equipment, but at this point my camera bag is still bigger than my portfolio so I can't claim any points on talent. ;) |

Yeah, that Larry was always sort of a d-bag.
In answer to the questions about participation level - a photo a day is usually considered standard, but this is not a strictly enforced rule and you should feel free to participate at whatever level you can for the month. Remember that participation in a side challenge is only partially about posting photos, and that one of the things participants really enjoy is receiving comments on their photos from the other participants.
(Note - if anybody here is actually named Larry . . . I'm kidding. If nobody here is named Larry, then I stand by my characterization - Larry is a total d-bag.)

Thanks, Ed ( shutterpuppy), for adding my name to the list, and for the clarification on the side challenge "rules." Actually, I think Ken ( mad_brewer) was referring to me when he mentioned the "Larry Rule", though he was just kidding about the five-a-day thing. And I also know you were joking, so no worries. Though now that I think about it, I suspect I've indulged in my share of d-baggery! |

Anyone up for a side-side-challenge? I'm going for the side-challenge triple-header:
Sunglasses for a month, posting before and after shots, with a 10mm lens...
I'll either be wildly successful or poor and unemployed by the time it's over.
50% is my goal.

I'm only doing a double header: I figure people are going to get really tired of car keys @ 100mm ;)

Originally posted by shutterpuppy: Hi all - inspired by Gordon's great general idea here, let's see if we can drum up some interest in a side challenge for June.
The idea is to pick one prime lens (or one focal length of you only have a zoom available) and shoot all pictures for the month with that lens. No switching out! If you don't normally work with primes this is a great way to get some exposure to "composing in your head" and "zooming with your feet." If you do normally shoot primes, perhaps pick a focal length that you don't use as often.
Ideally you would shoot everything for the entire month with the one lens, or the one focal length, but if that is a little draconian then just commit to shooting all the images for the side challenge with the one lens or one focal length. To get the best benefit from the exercise, it's probably best to keep your cropping to a minimum, but other than that, post-processing can generally fall along the lines acceptable within the Advanced Editing rule set.
A photo a day would be great, but feel free to participate at whatever level you have time for. Remember that participation in a side challenge is only partially about posting photos, and that one of the things participants really enjoy is receiving comments on their photos from the other participants.
Two of the the best thing about side challenges:
1) no DQs!
2) No DNMC Nazis!)

RKT @ ~50mm (Lensbaby 2.0
citymars @ 85mm
annig @ 50mm or 60mm (apparently, he can't commit) HEY!! I am a SHE and I can commit-to playing with both of them hehehe
mad_brewer @ 10mm (10-20mm)
jimsapp @ 500mm (50-500mm) (really, I must do something about my drooling problem)

Germaine @ 50mm
bergiekat @ 50mm
If you are interested in joining, post below and I will add your name to the list. Once the month gets going I will start a new thread for the results.
Also, if you have been putting it off, this is a perfect opportunity to pony up for that DPC membership. Makes it much easier to view and comment on your photos. (And therefore much more likely that you will get views and comments on your photos.)
Come on . . . you know you want to. |

I was out yesterday (June 1) with my trusty old SMCA 50mm 1:2.0, no autofocus. I am reminded how much zoom lenses and auto focus has done to my tecnique. I have felt for some time that as my equipment gets better, my photos get worse. I guess it is just too easy to shoot from the hip.
At any rate, I will be posting some of my photos with observations throughout the month. I look forward to seeing others' work and hearing their observations as well.
Best of absolutely everything,
Bill |
