Why not make it a real challenge and limit to basic editing rules and cropping in one axis only for aspect ratio selection?

people like side challenges because of the lack of restraints, its more about getting and receiving feedback and improving your skill

I am certainly not trying to set any rules, just trying to understand what a side challenge is. So, do we critique each other on a range of photos that we take during the side challenge period? Is it typical to submit a photo per day/week/ 1, 10?

Well, live and learn. I am in in any event...

Hey Bill, no problem. The ideal in a side challenge is generally to try and shoot for a photo a day. Since most of us (except for Mr. Roflmao, of course) have lives outside of DPC, how many shots people actually take and post varies wildly, and everyone is encouraged to participate at whatever level they can manage.

As someone else said above, "side challenges" aren't really challenges - no ribbons and no scores - but rather a way to participate, get a lot of feedback, and get to know some of your fellow DPC members better.

Who is Art?

LOL. Indeed.

Thanks shutterpuppy. Unfortunately, I have a live outside DPC too. :-(

At any rate, 50mm f2 it is.

alright, count me in. I have never done one of these, but what the heck. So do I, since I am not a paying member, just link to my photos? Count me in at 200mm, and I'll be as extreme as Art, minimal photoshopping (only converting to B&W if I want) and ALWAYS f2.8 (might as well make this interesting for a first time, and get used to the new lens). *Takes a deep breath*

shoot! I want to try this... I almost ALWAYS shoot at 50 mm...

amathiasphoto has a good point... I too am not yet a paying member (though I'm leaning towards it in the near future...perhaps even more near if it's a requirement for side challenges...) and was wondering how exactly you post your photos if this is the case....

OK, I've decided on 300 and no duct tape.

anyone care to help answer this?

You can post a link to your photos. If you do it that way, make sure you have it set up so that we can leave you comments! :)

Is it too late to join in???

My lens of choice will be....my 50mm

Sign me up for my 85mm f1.8

Should be fun, I really enjoy the primes.

I'll sign up for half a month at 100mm. (I'm heading to the sandbox for a few weeks in June and will not be taking the camera with me this time.)

For those of you wondering about membership... I highly recommend you fork over the whopping $25 and get a year's worth with a portfolio. It makes it MUCH MUCH easier for those who want to look at your pictures and possibly comment to do so. Otherwise there's a lot of jumping around between sites/windows etc and at some sites you have to enter stupid codes to comment, etc. The comments you receive here will be worth the membership fee. Go for it!

Yippee will LOVE sharing a side challenge with you - am thinking of changing over to the 100mm myself - UNLESS I get an 85mm 1.8 before then - GRIN!

would enjoy joining, and sure I will at one point... when my wife gets a job, and money isnt quite the issue that it can be now! Thanks for the advice though :)

Nifty idea. Just recently I started using my 50mm more. So I'm in with the trusty 50mm f1.8.

Sounds fun...I'll give it a go with a 50mm.
05/23/2008 09:07:13 PM · #46
Is there room for me as well? Put me down for my 50mm...
05/23/2008 09:33:08 PM · #47
I would love to do this with 10.5mm but I just know that something will come up and I will have to change lenses. 50mm doesn't sound fun to me. Maybe when you do a week's long project I'll join.

Yeah, come on in! Feel free to participate as much as you want.

Note to all - been a busy day, but will get around to updating the participants list tomorrow at some point. I'll keep updating it every day or so until the end of the month.

Great to see all the turn out. This is going to be fun!!

I'd like to join too. I'll be using a 100mm. (I'll be gone a week in June.)

Might I suggest that this is the perfect opportunity to try shooting at a different focal length?
