When I'm going "OUT" to shoot, there are certain things I usually take with me, besides my camera. They are:
Telephoto Lens
Macro Lens (Broken at the moment though)
Magnifying Glass
Small Flash Light or Torch as some call it.
Lens Cloth
At times a small water gun to moisten flowers
A small, portable tripod, and if Hubby is with me, we'll bring the larger Slik
4 charged batteries
3 or 4 Compact flash cards 256 MP, 128 MP, 32 MP, and 16 MP.
One or 2 bottles of frozen water, that slowly melts and quenches my thirst in the hot Florida sun. One is always in my holder on my shoulder.
A hair clip or something to hold back foliage to get a clear shot of my subject, if needed.
Benadryl Capsules for the times I get attacked by Fire Ants, because of my own carelessness.
Business cards and a pen. I frequently will email a pic to a person who was kind enough to be a model in a landscape image, etc.
A snack
I'll usually apply some lavender lotion before I set out, that helps repel mosquitos, but is not harmful. I'll carry a small bottle of essential oil too.
The camera stays around my neck, and everything else fits into my light-weight camera bag.

I must travel way too light. I take my camera, a spare battery, a lens cloth and sometimes a tripod.
I will be adding an X-Drive II for my upcoming vacation, but it will probably stay in the car unless I plan on taking a serious number of shots somewhere (more than 100). I might try to add a lens hood and a miniture bean bag to the kit before the vacation though because I plan on taking a lot of landscape type shots.

If I have planned to shoot in a city, I add a bicycle to my camera and spare battery kit.

This is what I had for day one of Railfest. Camera, 2 128 cards, 3 close up filters, a star filter, B2 and t2 filters, haze filter, my press pass, 3 sets of batteries, a little notebook, my wallet, camera hood, old washclothe, monopod, 2 ziplock baggies, a large plastic grocery bag, Motrin for the sinus headache from all the pollens, and a very comfy pair of shoes! (Might have been the most important thing)
Before anyone asks about the ziplocks, one has the end cut out of it and I slip my camera into it to protect it somewhat in the rain. The second one I use to stick the camera in when I put it back in the camera bag. Keeps it nice and dry if the rains start socking through my bag, which has never happened yet.
The grocery bag I tied around the outside of the bag to also help keep everything dry. It might not be the best looking but it sure does work well for someone who doesn't do enough photographing in the rain to invest in proper rain gear. |

I usually take my camera with me... my memory cards... my extra battery.. all of my filters.. I never know which filters i may need. A tripod is a necessity.
Some of the out of the ordinary items I carry with me...
One white plastic garbage bag folded up in a pocket of my camera bag. This is a useful item for several reasons. It can always serve as overall protection from bad weather, but it also makes a nice hand-held cloud when you need one for diffusing direct sunlight.
I carry my cell phone with me. Sometimes it's useful to call in pick up order for dinner on my way home. It seems that a lot of the places I end up making photos are in places where there is no cell phone service.
If I'm going into the mountains or planning to get off the beaten path in any way, I take my handheld GPS receiver. Believe it or not, this has come in handy on more than one occasion :) Men are bad about asking for directions... they are even worse when there is no one to ask :)
I carry my mojo as well.

I try to keep as minimal as possible though ..

My thoughts exactly Mag.
Sometimes I carry my Powershot G2; sometimes I lug my 21 pounds of camera gear.

I have four bags and two tripods.
Mostly I just grab bag 1 now.
For long trips I grab bags 1 and 2 and maybe 3.
Bag 4 mostly stays home :).
I have one aluminum tripod that does everything from pointing at the sky to pointing at the ants on the ground. It has two camera mounts. It does horizontal and vertical camera positioning. It has the quick release snaps. But is rather heavy and I only take along if I have a volunteer to carry it.
The second tripod is sturdy plastic and is very light. But does not have all of the features of the first tripod. This is the one I carry most and just attach it to the bag. It was broken this past weekend so I will have to replace it.
Bag 1 - Canon EOS 10D
Bag 2 - Support equipment for digital cameras
Bag 3 - Olympus C-3030Z
Bag 4 - Non-Digital Canon EOS 650
Bag 1 (Quick out and back shooting):
Canon EOS 10D
28-90mm lens
105mm macro lens
70-300mm zoom lens
2x converter
Filters
Flash
Flash bounce
Spare battery (Note 1)
1 gb CF card
512mb spare CF card
Lens cleaning kit
Pen
Paper
Napkins
Note 1: Presently the battery life for the Canon EOS 10D does not require me to carry a car charger. I have the AC charger that is carried in bag 2.
Bag 2 (Long Trips):
Vixvue 20gb portable HD.
Fast 6 in 1 usb memory card reader.
Battery Chargers - EOS 10D, AA quick charge and Digipower pack and AC charger (Olumpus).
Cables - USB camera and Vixvue, Video (TV) (connect to TV for large preview alone or with friends), AC plugs.
EOS manuals.
Olympus manuals.
Some software - In case I go to someones house that does not run XP mostly.
I'm not addicted am I?
LOL

The worst thing about GPS devices (have the Garmin Etrex Euro), especially the small ones without a map.........
Arrow says: : "Go that way!"
But there is a 50m wide smelly swamp/river wet muddy stinky etc "that way right in front of you" and you need to do a 5km detour to pass it....
Don't step over the edge of a canyon! :)

When my Lowepro Orion Trekker gets here I'll be stuffing it as below:
Canon 10D Body
EF 50mm f/1.8 lens
EF 28-105 mm Zoom lens
Lens Hoods for both lenses
UV Filters for protection (52&58mm)
Circular Polarizer Filters (52&58mm)
Close-up Lenses (52&58mm)
Spare Battery

This is the planned equipment list for now at least. I'll be using it to visit as many of the nearby state parks as possible :)

Canon 10D, Tamrac Expedition 5 backpack for the gear.
70-200 f4.0L, 50mm f1.4, and 100mm f2.8 Macro lenses. Poarizers and UV filters for each and graduated ND filters for the 50 and the 70-200.
Two extra batteries. Two CF cards (512 MB 40x Lexar). My 30GB Super Digibin portable hard drive. Water bottle and snacks.
Oh yeah, my three boys ages 1, 3, 5. Being a stay at home dad right now, my photo trips usually have to include them. They are detrimental for taking shots, but my wife gets mad at me when I lock them in the closet! (Just a joke, no need to call social services!)
