My Free Study.......such that it is....not appreciated here, yet won a local camera club contest with a score not often seen....
I'm starting to wonder why I bother.
Of coures the title was supposed to be PALM Tree Reflections...
I would appreciate genuine critique if you like.
This was shot in broad daylight at the beach, I fished it out of an image probably 70% larger than what this is, darkened it and hit the contrast kinda hard to get the effect of the sun & tree reflection without losing her face and hair detail.
I hammered it around with my HDR conveerter for tonal range as well.
I really like the way it came out, and so have most people who have seen it, but it only did 5.8 in the FS.
So be it.......I'm just starting to get really frustrated with challenges since my work is selling and winning competitions in the "real" world whilst getting clobbered here.
It's just kind of demoralizing.....
Sorry.....whine off now.

TO NIKONJEB - I liked your picture in the FREE Study and commented on it. I thought the conversion was great and it was a nicely produced black and white. I relooked at the challenge and to me, I did see pictures that I don't understand how they ranked above yours. But personally, I wouldn't get discouraged. Just take a look at portfolios around this site. Almost every photographer has scores that range all over. And you don't see too many that always consistently produce high scores. In fact, I really like looking at everyone's early stuff. You can see how much they've grown and that gives me enouragement. I haven't come across any photographer that doesn't have deep dips in their challenge entries. Besides, you have some great scores in your portfolio. Everyone could get discouraged here, if they let the ups and downs of scoring get to them. Everyone's in the same boat as you - that should make you feel pretty good!
I'm just a newbie, but wanted to share my thoughts. |

To NIKONJEB- Scoring high here and selling pictures in the real world are two different things entirely. Here the judges are photographers, many professional who judge pictures for their technical quality as well as its creativity.
In the real world I could sell pictures of red barn's all day...I don't find them personally creative tho. The key to getting high scores here or selling pictures in the "real world" is the same principle as for any business....find out what the market wants and give it to them.
