Alright.. so I said i'd update.. did a tour today.. gotta go over the numbers with Pedro on Sunday.. should be able to post stuff Monday for lodging options.. etc.. Have a great weekend everyone :)
03/11/2008 02:10:57 AM · #235
Okay .. so Sunday didn't work out for P and I to meet. We did however meet tonight and have decided on a location and found a very affordable and available lodging option for everyone.

I am contacting the place tomorrow to confirm we'll take the facility rental. I will also set up a block of rooms for your lodging options... when I know how you can book your rooms... (if you so choose to go this route) .. I will post the account or conference number to quote along with a contact name and phone number.

Should be by tomorrow night if all goes well with the booking. I'll have to do most of the phoning / booking on my lunch hour tomorrow.. but the ball is absolutely rolling.. and its in our favour :)

Just don't stand in its path if it gets rolling really fast! :)
03/11/2008 05:51:38 AM · #237
As much as I would love to be there, I must regretfully bow out. My schedule just won't support a trip at that time. I do expect to see LOTS of pictures posted afterward!!

Hey everyone,

Okay so here is the scoop.

Pedro and I met, we decided on the Olympic Volunteer Center (1833 Crowchild Trail N.W. Calgary) at the end of McMahon Stadium next to the Red and White Club for those of you familiar with the city. We have 3 rooms booked for the day (July 5, 2008) and one of the rooms can be divided to make 4.

Lodging options: We have worked out a deal with conference services at the University of Calgary and I will be making a deposit to hold the rooms (60 of them) for a total of 40 days. The day I pay the administration fee I will be given an access code for you to all call and make your reservations.

There will be two bedroom apartments with a kitchen, living room and full bath. Each bedroom will have a single bed and you will be able to lock your door. The quoted price I have for the 2 bedroom apartments is 50.00 a person / night. Given this is Stampede Week and all the hotels laughed at me when I inquired about a group rate... its a stellar deal. I toured the campus and saw the apartments first hand and they are equal to hotels with the bonus of a kitchen if needed.

The second option is the dorm style rooms. Its a big room with a bed on each side. If there are two people per room it works out to about 29.00 a night / person. Washroom down the hall with a common area and common kitchen.

There is public transportation to and from the University.. via our light rail train system and or Buses. You can bring your laptops there will be Wifi (?) connections in your rooms and on campus. Those of you in Europe and elsewhere.. will need the proper electrical adapters. You will have passes to use the state of the art exercise facilities and pool at the university as well if thats at all interesting to you. There will also be places to purchase food (small outlets or restaurants in the area and on campus)

Its right across the street from the workshop as well.. so location is perfect.

I suggested people might want rooms starting around the 3rd.. until the 8th. or so.

Thats the news thus far.. its now a matter of signing contracts ... laying down deposits.. and getting your codes to start booking.

So far we have 5 people who have paid.. *see list below*

Any questions.. email me at europemeetscanada@gmail.com

Alright so I finally rec'd the contracts. I was away with work flying and its now easter weekend. I will go pay the deposits Tuesday and we'll be golden to start booking your rooms... You will have as I mentioned earlier 40 days in which to book before the block that we have reserved is open to the public and you will take the chance of not getting a room if you leave it past the 40 day booking block.

Shelia .. grumble away sistah.. you will love 16th ave.. just repeat after me everyday until the workshop 100 times a day... I LOVE DRIVING 16th ave. in Calgary .. I LOVE DRIVING 16th ave. in Calgary.. before you know it.. you'll love driving 16th ave in Calgary ;) HA. Its all about re-framing dolly ;)

Happy Easter everyone..

I know right? who puts stop lights every block on a highway!

I lived in Calgary while going to University. I think the only time I drove 16th Ave was to go to Peter's Drive In. There's always a better way to get across the city.
