What an awful experience. Glad all that was damaged was your camera. One must be careful... My Girl's brother shoots for a magazine (travel and such.). He was shooting up north in Greece this past summer when 4 men started yell as to why he took their picture, which he didn't. They chased him, threw him down, swiped his camera and left him with bruised ribs and upset for quite some time about the ordeal.... I guess one must always be aware of his/her surroundings when taking pics alone...

I agree with Sheila. Lets not turn this into a religous depate. Lets let everyone belive what they choose and not demean folks for believing differently than we do.

This was obviously a tramatic experience and glad Enzo is safe (I only wish his camera has survived)!

Enzo is a man of faith. This is a photography site. Questioning someone's beliefs isn't appropriate here (unless it has something to do with exposure!). Whether it was divine intervention or Elvis is totally irrelevant. What is relevant is that Enzo is safe and unharmed.

.. without a permit you mean, right?

There are a few states that allow you to carry a concealed weapon if you have all the right paperwork.

Yes, you are correct.

Carry with a permit is an option in some states but not in other parts of the world, like Australia I believe. I strongly suggest anyone who chooses to carry get the proper permits and training.

This is one of the reasons I like my Manfrotto tripod & monopod. Damn heavy club, if it ever came down to it.

This hardly compares, but his right hand wasn't exacly waving "hi". Shot from a distance with a 200mm lens, I quickly departed the scene after I realized the less than friendly reception I was receiving.

I did have my Manfrotto with me...should have whacked it across his head! Oops, did I say that out loud...???

Glad to hear you're alright man, quite the scare and wake up call. The camera is just a camera and you'll get it fixed or a new one but that will haunt you for a while. I always carried a large pocket knife on me( not that it would help much) until one day a guy kept following me around asking for money, that creeped me out. Since I live in the US and in a states that allows the right to carry a firearm I finally got my permit and carry every time I go out. I do it for just that same thing that happened to you, when there is no one around to help or hear you and it's just you and him/them. I think the important thing to take from this is to be aware of your surrondings at all times, it doesn't matter what you have for protection if you don't see it coming b/c you have your head buried in your camera and are unaware. You did the right thing Enzo and I'm happy you are ok, now go get that mace or tazer. Trevor~

I just said exactly that to someone I was telling this story to. "Should have whacked him with his tripod!"

I cut my finger really badly somehow whilst out last week and bled all over my tripod - it looks like I've done exactly as you thought!

Did you at least get the shot you were trying for? (presumably the images on CF survived the water?)

Glad you're alive but keep in mind "man cannot live by shooting cupcakes, alone". That's a true photographers adage...it is.

It totally sux losing the camera. I know I'd lose my mind w/out one and hopoefully you'll be back up on that horse sooner than later.

I go out to some funky neighborhoods sometimes and you really need to keep your head up.

Again, glad you're fine.

Thank God that you are alive to relate this to us, remind us how nasty things are getting out there and remind us to keep our wits about us.

I think some of the most traumatic aspects of this thread is the spelling. Let's see if I can do worse.

Good to see you're still alive, Enzo. Sorry about the D200.

Just to muddy the waters that maybe somebody thought needed quieting...

I thought the post that encouraged Enzo to recognise himself as the agent of his escape rather than something external and intangible, was designed to help the man in his time of post traumatic stress. He was being encouraged to believe in himself, or at least to recognise the success of his own action. That doesn't mean he has to stop believing in God.

I've been wrong before.

Keep talking to us, Enzo. Bad luck and well done.

Oh my god, that sounds terrifying! :(
So sorry that had to happen, and I'm so glad you're ok!!!
Agh, I hate crazy nasty people!
And your poor camera :(
Thank god you're safe!!!

On the mild upside, I bet the guy is crapping his pants because you driving to the police station only fueled his suspicion that you were taking pictures of his illegal activity...

I just wanna point out that YOU are the one who got yourself out of trouble, not the other thing you mentioned. And I say that based on the facts contained in your story... I don't know where you got the idea that something which doesn't exists saved you. You're obviously the one who did all the work.

Are you referring to his reference of God?! Then I have one question for YOU!

How do we know that you have a brain? I can't see it, I can't feel it, I can't even TOUCH it; so therefore it must not exist! Why would we believe someone that doesn't have a brain?

No need to overreact with personal insults, all I said is that he got himself out of trouble, he didn't need anything else. I like crediting the guy better than "something else I don't feel the need to create in my head". Sorry if that makes you feel angry. :\

Guys, this really isn't the place for metaphysics.

I am sure he is long gone by now!!! I am happy you are alright. You need a stiff drink for sure.

Enzo, I'm glad you are safe. What a terrible story. Hang in there and remember you didn't do anything wrong or stupid. It was the other guy who did something wrong and stupid.

Sad about the camera, but now you can get a D300! :-D

PS: Natasha, sorry to hear about your ugly experience, too. :-(

Sounds like the best plan I've heard so far. Can we all borrow your boyfriend?

Only if you feed him!

Might be cheaper to rent him by the hour. :-)

I just said exactly that to someone I was telling this story to. "Should have whacked him with his tripod!"

That's the first thing I thought of, too ... he can't take my camera or chase me in his car if he's laying on the ground bleeding and semi-conscious.
01/31/2008 05:56:19 PM · #75
I don't know, you did the right thing. Whack him with the tripod and he's likely just to get madder than he is. Those crazy people can take a beating like an ox and keep on coming.

Anyway, I would have probably tried to use the camera as you can swing it faster at the end of the strap and we knew it was already toast...
