Enzo, that's one scary story! I'm glad you got out of there unhurt! I wouldn't worry too much about him tracking you down. I'm sure he was just trying to scare you, or he would have done something down on the beach when you were all alone. It's only in the movies where all the criminals have contacts in department of motor vehicles!

What a crazy scary story! Thank God you are OK...

I got groped by a teenager last week while out taking photos on my own in a town, near Amman. Within 5 minutes of shouting big time at this guy and him running away, another man starting seriously harrassing me...to the point where I walked to a police station and got my friend to pick me up...no more photographing on my own in Jordan!

Whew! What a horrible experience! Glad you are back here to post though.

Holy sh*t. That's a helluva a fright, and shows just how easy it is to get caught unawares. I'd bet you never even noticed the guy before he came up to you, wrapped up in the scene and the shoot. That one struck home for me, because I often take off early in the morning before the family is awake, and find myself in some deserted location when the mine wanders as to just wtf would I do if someone came up and started a hassle. Even with a cell phone on me, I'm never sure I'd be able to use it.

Glad you made it out. Bummer about the camera.

That's terrible! Do you think maybe you did get something on camera?

Perhaps try to write down as much as you can remember about the guy: how he looked, scars, mannerisms, etc. You'll only forget them as time passes, and it might help down the road if you have everything documented.

Not to mention, you know where it happened. I know you probably never want to see him again, but at least you know where he might "frequent", and next time you'll be prepared and have your cell phone and taser/real gun/double barrel shotgun ready.

Seems like you experienced something we all assume may happen to us at any time. Glad you used your head and made it ok. Me, I have a license to carry and I do carry whenever I go to potentially dangerous places.

1. Never do this kind of photography alone. Take a friend.

4. Be aware of who might be around...even quiet secluded places have people hiding out doing all sorts of stuff.

I'll add a piece of advice:

1. Take a serious self defense course.

I was confident before I started taking a karate course (more like mixed martial arts). Now, after a few months, I am certain that I can defend myself against more than 99% of anybody if it absolutely comes down to it. My son takes the same adult classes that I go to. I feel that as society becomes numb to the violence that we see and hear about daily, we are more and more at risk from these unsavory characters because they are more likely than ever to do something than ever before. I want him to have the confidence that he can defend himself if he finds himself in a situeation in which the trouble can't be avoided in the first place.

Thats really scary and I am glad you are ok. Pepper spray isn't really effective in most situations, especially in the situation you were in. It could of cost you your life. Best bet is to carry a gun, stun gun, or a taser. The taser is your best bet because they can fire up to 15 feet and they will not kill the individual, well not all the time. The taser paralyzes the central nervous system which controls are muscles and the person drops to the ground in seconds.

Beat me to it.

Enzo (and I) live in Victoria, Australia. We do not have the right to bear arms (or carry) down here - SMILE!

As far as I can tell it's the same for Tasers and Stun Guns.

Wow, you're prolly going to be looking over your shoulder for a while, eh? Try your best not to stress, though, If he was afraid you caught him doing something really bad, he probably took off to somewhere far away as soon as he saw you pull up the the police station with supposed evidence. Glad you're OK!!

That is crazy; What a real jack@$$! It's those kind of people that make me want to bring along my S&W 44MAG. I was raised with morals and kindess so I don't take it lightly when someone thinks that they are BIG STUFF/bully. I'm sick of these kind of people!

PS. Lisa packing 'heat' here in the states isn't really legal either!

Horrible experience. Glad to hear that you are ok, but a bit shaken up. Sorry to hear about the camera. But as we all know, you can replace the gear...

Let's go kick his butt Enzo C'mon...

I never go out on a shoot with my boyfriend.

He's 6'5", almost 300 pounds, wears all black, has a scruffy beard and long hair, and answers to the name of Chainsaw.

Never felt safer in my life...

.. without a permit you mean, right?

There are a few states that allow you to carry a concealed weapon if you have all the right paperwork.

The moral of the story here is ALWAYS carry a roll of film with you!!! :)

Glad your ok.

Did you describe everything to the police? Car color, description of the guy, etc. ???

Omg, that could really be a good idea! You hand it over, he goes away... hmm, I might have to tuck one in the kit for just-in-case...

Sounds like the best plan I've heard so far. Can we all borrow your boyfriend?

Enzo, VERY glad to hear you're still with us. Send the camera in, get a new one, whatever, but keep shooting and stay safe.

(And I love the idea of carrying a roll of film to "hand over"... )

Glad you're okay. Shame about the camera but it's just hardware at the end of the day (and insured I hope).

In similar circumstances I always keep my bag closed and underneath my tripod (for quick escape), and if lighting permits shoot (photos) of the aggressor a few times (just in case). I also find it really helps to look 'grungy' and journo like, rather than middle class and hobbyist (not difficult for me). "None of your business" is often the best reply if I'm feeling confident of the situation, "nothing special - just something for school" otherwise.

Hope you get your body sorted out soon

Best

Yes, you are correct.

What a horrible horrible experience. It'll take a lot of whatever to get over. (Maybe it is you and not the Bear that needs a visit from JulietNN). Peace.
