Hey, i'd be more than happy to send some cashola into the pot. It isn't right that this happened so i'd be happy to help a fellow photographer (and DPCer) out.

PM me with details if this goes ahead.

Hey everyone,

Thanks so much for the goodwill and kind gestures to help financially, but I am really OK. I am really nervous about going out in public places at night alone, but hopefully I will get over that and will get my confidence back.

The dpc community has been amazing with PM's and emails, and this post has really touched our hearts.

Right now I feel a bit in shock. I have been replaying all kinds of scenarios in my head.

It could have been dropping the camera in the water that saved me as he must have thought I wrecked the 'film'. He may have gone back to his mates who had second thoughts and that's why he pursued me.

Thanks again for all your kindness everyone,

Enzo

Well, if you're after a local DPCer to go out and take photos with at night, I have two boxers... then we'd have safety in number, safety of two fierce looking (though they're gentle as... but most people don't realise that) dogs and I might be able to pick up some photography tips :)

Thank god you are ok, Enzo. Who knows what could have happened..

I hope you're not going crazy thinking about the "why" and "what-if's", keep it easy and stay safe..

*hugs*

Pepper spray and tazers are useless against guns.
It's best to go with a friend and have both of your cell phones ON and CONNECTED, with bluetooth wireless headphones. Have a wireless headphone on and your wife or friend connected on the cell phone. That way you know it's working.

You could alert the police in the area, that you're planning to do some early morning shooting, unless it's on private property. The best bet is the element of surprise and being prepared.

I've had one guy ask me about my camera with my 80-200mm lens on the beach near sunset. Luckily it was not desolate. It was in a good neighborhood, too.

Once I almost got chased in a foreign country, a stranger in a car asked where an obvious City was when they found me stopped viewing a map. After a minute I raced away, and kept moving fast through stop signs and passing cars, just in case he was following.

I heard of a famous photographer from Europe got some of his equipment stolen on a shoot in Brazil (about 3 years ago). Now he has a body guard friends go with him.

Until I get insurance on my equipment I don't go to the beach at sunrise or sunset, or downtown. Even then I plan to try to find someone to go with.

I do not plan on carrying any guns (I'll use my voice, brains and feet), although when someone is on drugs, that may be necessary.
Yes, a trained dog would be good, too.

I've been off-site with my houseguest, just saw this. Horrifying story. When I shoot at night/dawn I take Karma with me; she's all black, her leash (a "gentle leader") looks like a muzzle, and she's fairly sizable, so she acts as a pretty good deterrent... I'm glad you're OK, Enzo.

Enzo, I'm so glad you are okay - what a terribly scary experience! And I'm very sorry about your camera.

What is really freaky about this story is that it sounds like either the guy who chased you is just a paranoid nut job, or you stumbled upon someone committing a pretty serious crime. Surely his motive for chasing you down was that he was terrified you had something on film (memory card) that would identify him. I hope the description you gave the police help them find him in the future - he sounds like a menace to society! And I really hope he didn't have a child or a body in his car.

I never have any fear when I'm out in dangerous places at odd hours taking photos. I'm a Ninja. I don't have any need to carry a gun or any weapons, my entire body is a lethal weapon. Though sometimes I do carry my throwing stars, numchucks, or poison darts.

Seeing your profile picture, we don't doubt this in the least. Just your appearance would strike fear into the heart of a mortal man. In fact, you didn't happen to be in Australia recently did you?

Maybe instead of carrying a a taser, you should carry a roll of film? The next time someone demands your film, just fumble around with the camera bit and toss it to him. ;-)

Holy Crap! That is insane! I'm so glad to hear you are ok. That must have been realllllly scary. So happy to know that you are ok!

3. Never stand in a place that someone could trap you...
4. Be aware of who might be around...even quiet secluded places have people hiding out doing all sorts of stuff...

5. Make your best attempt to convert your fear into confidence (breathe, assay the lay of the land, yawn, anything calm, specific and unhurried).
6. If 5. doesn't work, fake it well (think of yourself as a lawyer for the Hell's Angels or something similar).
7. Respond to verbal provocation calmly or humorously, preferably on the aggressor's 'level'. A 'leading' response can diffuse aggression, i.e. do not simply 'answer' a leading question -try to diffuse instead.

(Easier said than done, but, probably, worth the exercise)...

I think you can shoehorn that image into a challenge somewhere ... maybe an advertisement for the durability of your memory card if nothing else! :)

I thank God, it wasn't worse than this, but it was a costly lesson,

Wow! What a harrowing experience. Glad you got out of it relatively unscathed!

I couldn't agree more about your points of caution above. Earlier this year I went out late at night to the National Mall in Washington D.C. and ended up being initially stalked then outright chased by a group of 6 or 8 skin-head types. Thankfully I got to my car and rolling before they caught up.

One additional caution I would add specifically for the men: Don't think you are big, bad and tough and don't need to worry. I am 6'7", 260lbs (and looked bigger in heavy winter gear) and quite capable of taking care of myself. I always felt I didn't have to worry until that night. I am quite sure the collective group would have pounded me into a thick paste.

Oh, and if a fund gets started I'll be happy to kick in. :-)

Hello. I read your post and wow that sounds like one of those bizarre experiences. Glad you made it out ok even if your camera took a dive.

I don't reckon that you need to worry about the guy any more though. By the sounds of his odd behaviour he was probably wide on drugs and doesn't even remember doing most of what he did, let alone would he have had the thought to take your plate number or anything like that.

I think you can chalk this one off.

Enzo, I'm SO glad you're o.k. Bummer about the camera but the guy sounds so crazy, you were lucky to get out of it in one piece.

Thank you...I am overwhelmed by the generosity and kindness of the people of dpc. When I think of what COULD have happened, I am glad I am still around, not in hospital or even in a morgue somewhere. God has been good to me...

Thank you to everyone that has PM'd me...especially DrAchoo and iamwoman who said some things that meant a great deal to me...everyone said great things, so I hope I am not leaving anyone out ... thank you dpc

Enzo, I just read your harrowing tale--and I'm so sorry it happened. And I saw your photo -- is that the fellow's sillouette we are seeing? It's a shame really you didn't take any pictures of his face, because then you'd have something good for the police!

Thanks also for the sage advice about shooting alone. I've had the same worries sometimes when I've seen someone suspicious and I'm in the middle of nowhere. Anyway, glad you're ok!

What a terrifying story, man.
Glad you came out of everything okay (scared nearly to death, but alive!).
Cameras can be replaced. Lives can not.
It was mentioned in an earlier comment that as residents of Australia, nobody can carry weapons - the outcome of your ordeal could have been a LOT worse (guess there are advantages to living in a country that had it's beginnings as a penal colony,eh? ;) ).

Praise the Lord you are ok bro. Take care and stay in prayer.

Enzo, this story is the one thing we all dread, out alone, early morning/late evening, in remote places. We all take the risks, but hope it never happens. You did well to get out of there in one piece.

Now comes the hard part, getting out there and getting on with life. Don't let this keep you from going right back out there and taking those amazing shots.

Good luck my friend, hope everything comes back together.
