Dose anyone have the ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 70-300mm F4.0-5.6 lens? i seen it today on newegg and its there lowgrade super teliphoto for only 300 bucks and was thinking about pickin it up. would it be worth it or should i just save up for the High Grade ZUIKO DIGITAL 50-200 F2.8-3.5<- $600 to $1000 i love the distance on the 70-300 though cause i shoot alot of nature, the only thing i dont like is theres no F3.5

I don't know anything about the 70-300 but I can tell you that I DO LOVE the 50-200. I just got that for Christmas and I feel like I can do so much more than with the kit lenses. When I was doing research, I saw many times where people would always make a comparison between the quality of the ZUIKO and the Sigmas for our camera. And the 50-200 constantly gets rave reviews. It was in my opinion at the time that it was better to wait and save for the better lens. Like I said, I am not able to make a comparison, but I AM really happy with what I have!

I have the 40-150 f3.5 - 4.5 Zuiko Digital lens that I used to shoot this photo

It seemed fine to me but I think I would personally save up for the Zuiko Digital 50-200 f2.8-3.5. But if you don't have the patience I don't think the other lens is bad either.

Becky - that was the lens I used all the time before I got this one. I would use it for all the family sports shots and was pleased with it but I just wanted that little extra reach. I know you have that macro lens (which I want to get some day too lol) but I have been able to get some really nice close up shots as well with this lens. I think that you will see a world of difference between the 40-150 and the 50-200. I think I am in love with the lens right now so that is why I keep gushing lol.

I have both the 14-54 "high grade" lens and the 40-150 "standard grade" lens. There is a huge difference between the two - so much so that I rarely use the second one. I'm kicking myself that I let the deadline for the $150 rebate on the 50-200 come and go. I covet that lens.

PS - a note to Olympus owners - go look at the E3 profile page and see who has joined us!

Thanks for your comment. One day I will get the 50-200. It was on my Xmas list with the external flash (FL50) and several other photo items. I let my husband choose from the list so I would be somewhat surprised. He chose the flash which I love. As soon as I put some cash aside I will definately go for the higher grade lens. As for the macro lens, that one has become my primary lens. It was well worth the money.

I use the Macro lens mostly and love it. The kit lenses are not incredible in quality but they do get the job done. If you work with the sweet spot of the lens then there is no reason that the 70-300 wouldn't be a good choice. I understand wanting the better glass because I posted a photo here the other day shot with the Macro lens of someone surfing about 1/8 mile off shore and from 200 feet above the ocean. It looks great for the distance and the extreme crop. So the quality of glass really does make a difference. Even with the bad compression here in this jpeg, you can see the surfer pretty well.
