Surfer riding a big wave at Pila`a Beach. A few rides later and his board broke in two.

I cannot believe I took this with the 50mm Macro and it looks this good. I am about 200 feet above the ocean and maybe 1/8 mile away from the surfer. The waves were big but we are expecting 25 to 35 foot swell this weekend. I can't wait.

This bay, Pila`a is a beautiful spot on the island and a man named Pfluger did some illegal grading on his property above the bay and killed part of the reef. He was levied the largest environmental fine for a private landowner by the EPA.

The surfer is great to give us perspective of the size of those waves. Well done.

Wow, I haven't thought to use mine like that. I am always doing portraits or macros. Glad to see it did so well. I can't wait to visit Hawaii again with my DSLR. Hopefully one day soon.

You know what's really funky cool about you using the macro lens for this? It makes the waves look regular size (like when they crash on the shore) and then that surfer dude looks like a toy. That is a really cool effect!

Wow - hadn't I read your notes I would have thought you're much closer. When I saw the surfer, I realized how big those waves must be.
