Sorry, but the separation of church and state exists for a reason. Regardless any one person's view of any particular religion, the school's purpose is to teach life SKILLS, not worship.

Please do not confuse my response - I agree that teaching children to get along with others IS a major part of growing up, and vital to people becoming mature & productive members of society. I just don't see that religion is the answer, given the huge debates it ALWAYS causes.

Kelli - Both children could be taught that their behaviors were not acceptable. Degree of 'punishment' could be determined by their individual track records (was it their first offense, or tenth?) Either way, good luck.

Guys, whoa!!! Please stay on topic. I got confused just reading this. Homeschooling and the virtues (or lack thereof, depending on your perspective of it) is a totally 'nuther thread! At least the way it was introduced here. :)

OK, I don't know exactly how the discussion turned to religion and child abuse, but this is what I'm planning...

I have a conference scheduled for Monday with the principle. I'm going to ask that this be stricken from his permanent record and explain my reasons. Spitting is actually considered to be a form of assault in NJ (I'm not sure about elsewhere), and I don't feel this warrants that. Failing her agreement I'm going to ask that it be explained in detail, that it was a raspberry and not actually spitting and the reason be added that he was responding to verbal abuse. Failing this, I'll appeal to the school board.

i really don't mean to sound rude, but if you DO write a letter, you should make sure to spell it "principal."

i agree that this sounds like an overzealous punishment, and i'm sorry for your son. if i had been suspended for every raspberry, i'd probably still be in 2nd grade.

some people say i still should be.

Sounds like a good, rational, fair plan. Best to you. Hope it is resolved to your satisfaction.

A permanent record really doesn't follow you around, only in movies.

Not for you whole life, lol! But I'm pretty sure disciplinary actions follow you until the end of high school. I could be wrong though.

Sorry for my principle/principal mixup (damn spell check)!

Ever since I watched Jesus Camp, homeschooling scares me.

That lady showing her children "educational" videos that talk about how fossils are fake and that dinosaurs and man roamed the earth together, and not teaching them science because it goes against god...makes me reallly scared for the future.

I can understand this, but before Adam bit the apple, the the world was pure and no killing. So, some Christians believe that preditors were created by God after this first sin. So, maybe radical, maybe not. But evolution is still a theory and all links are being questioned each bone discovery.

Some think that Creation is a theory.

Who is right?

Just a thought......8>)

Haha...I have beaten up more people then I can count in my life, yet still have perfect credit. Maybe being a bully helps your credit in the long run! SCORE!

Not trying to argue, but that seems like a very perplexing concept, a (conservative im assuming) christian, working in a field such as biology.
Yes, an I used to be an active member in Audubon (many offices held), worked for National Wildlife Federation off and on for 10 years, did an Outdoor education stint in Ohio (there I was labeled a conservative conservationist, in 1981) and I'm usually the only conservative amoung the groups. It was fun, but getting to old for the non-sense. I believe in evolution, but not sure when it began. Mutations usually lead to death not new species. My favorite saying is adapt, migrate or die. Back to original discussion.

Personally, I believe in a wise, omnipotent, and benevolent higher power/supreme being.

I also think that he/she laid the groundwork for evolution and the forthcoming arguments to amuse him/herself for the last few thousand years.

Go ahead.....refute THAT!!!! LOL!!!!

Soon the poor kids won't even be able to pick their noses in peace!

My past school records didn't get beyond the school. For all the times I was in the office for swats for fights, throwing snow balls and spit wads (no AIDS in those days), and just talking in class. So, I don't think this incident will affect your child. But, I would definitely have the record cleared on the principle of not having a fair hearing before suspension. Sorry I started the other rant stuff. It all has been discussed before. Van

Not possible. I have a grandmother to take care of who doesn't plan on leaving her house until she dies. After that, it's quite possible we'll be going south. Warmer climes and cheaper cost of living.

I don't think creationism gets to the same level of proof to warrant being called a theory, in the scientific sense of the word. Most discussions seem to either accidentally or deliberately aim to ignore the meaning of the word theory in this context and jump to the more colloquial 6th version

theory n.
1/ A set of statements or principles devised to explain a group of facts or phenomena, especially one that has been repeatedly tested or is widely accepted and can be used to make predictions about natural phenomena.
...
6/An assumption based on limited information or knowledge; a conjecture.

What happened sounds all ridiculous to me. My son (5 years old) got "in trouble" at Kindergarten the other day for saying BUTTCRACK. Oh well. Talked with him and told him not to use that word anymore.
I have caught him giving a raspberry (not that I care muh about that) before and was quick enough to flick his tongue with my finger...then told him that e could get in trouble for that at school. Doesn't do it now.
You never know what is going to be next. Giving birth control to 11 year olds (without parents knowledge) by the school is ok, but that raspberry thing by an 8 year old...YIKES! Just wait 3 years and then just have him start asking for condoms and equal rights for him getting a birth control pill too. :)

This just goes to show that you cannot legislate common sense.
