To add to this, quoting D.T Suzuki (Zen and Japanese Culture, pg 23):
Wabi really means "poverty," or, negatively, "not to be in the fashionable society of the time." To be poor, that is, not to be dependent on things worldly -wealth, power, and reputation - and yet to geel inwardly the presence of something of the highest value, above time and social position: this is what essentially constitutes wabi.
and
In painting especially, disregard of form results when too much attention or emphasis is given to the all-importance of the spirit. The "one-corner" style and economy of brush strokes also help to effect aloofness from conventional rules. Where you would ordianarily expect a line or a mass or a balancing element, you miss it, and yet this very thing awakens in you an unexpected feeling of pleasure. In spite of shortcomings or deficiencies that no doubt are apparent, you do not feel them so; indeed, this imperfection itself becomes a form of perfection.
Sabi:
When this beauty of imperfection is accompanied by antiquity or primitive uncouthness, we have a glimpse of sabi, so prized by Japanese connoisseurs. Antiquity and primitiveness may not be an actuality. If an object of art suggests even superficially the feeling of a historical period, there is sabi in it. ..
Just some food for thought...

A good idea for a challenge topic... but I can see this one cause more confusion and debate than any we've had before. Oh, and DNMC nazis will have a ball with it.

I'm sorry but I think this is a pretty lame challenge idea, right up there with Zen.
It's a free study with a funny name which no one is going to be able to understand anyway. The photos on the link Louis posted exhibit no common theme unless you sit there and convince yourself that they all represent some esoteric eastern philosophy which is the antithesis of you, your lifestyle, and the environment in which you live. That is to say, you lie to yourself and pretend to understand it.

Most will probably just shoot the same thing they always shoot and shoehorn it in and the voters will do what they always do and just pick the prettiest picture with little substance so in that respect it's lame but so is every other challenge if you just look at that.
For those who will actually shoot what the theme calls for and for those who will actually take the time to vote and appreciate the content underneath the eye candy or lack thereof it's not at all lame.

I'm SURE I can do another dog picture for wabi-sabi, and not only lie to myself but have others misunderstand me.
I want the chance. (Edit to show I am favour. Of the challenge).

For more insight, here's the Wiki article. I find it cool that the Wikipedia itself owes something of its history to Wabi-Sabi. |

Woke up from a dream about Wabi Sabi and thought it would make for a good challenge. It's already been suggested I see so consider it
bumped. |

We had a 'beauty in the everyday' challenge a few years back to address wabi sabi. Long overdue for another, by any name. |
