I'm back. Had a great time, with great company! No shots yet, will try and get some up in a while. We missed all who couldn't make it :-(

Well...

Thanks to Tater, we know you all went out and had a blast. But, I for one am inquiringly curious as to what happened. Did you all get into doing things that you don't want to talk about? Hmmmm

Did you take pictures that could be considered of a national security issue and you are all in jail pending arraignment? Hmmmm

You all had such a good time yesterday that you decided to continue all night long? (I remember some of those kinda 'parties' from my youth) Hmmm

But mostly... did you all make it home okay and did you get lotsa pictures???

Please...someone...let us know!!!

I earned nine hours overtime and saved $20 in gas money.

First of all, I want to apologize for not making it. I really did have my heart set on it but sometimes, stuff happens.

Just got back from up north. When is the next GTG planned? I saw a tentative date of October 20th at the Detroit Zoo. That would work good for me so if that is the date, Put me down for a maybe. I'm afraid to say I'll be there for sure because it might jinx me.

I'm already excited about it and can't wait.

By the way, when will we start seeing some of the shots from yesterday?

I had a wonderful time! ... we didn't do anything illegal.. (well I hope that going into the capital building while it was closed and the depot wasnt illegal...)
Taterbug and PamelaSue and Kaelva are a riot to go out shooting with.
Pam and I got to sneak into the choir loft at a church in Lansing. :)

Some ideas for Detroit:

Pamelasue, would Greektown be a good place to shoot in Detroit?

How about the River Rouge area for old run-down factories?

How about the Cork town area by the old Tiger Stadium? Would that be a good urban setting?

Is there anything worthwhile in the Royal Oak area?

And of course, the zoo.

all of those are great ideas ... Greektown isn't very big ... mostly limited to a few blocks, but can be good for street photography and there are some old buildings and churches nearby ...

River Rouge has lots of old factories ... have to be careful around the Ford plants though ... from what I've been told, they don't particularly care for people taking photos of the factories .. you can't get super close to most of them either ...

Royal Oak is fantastic for street photography ... tons of interesting characters walking the streets ... some old churches too ..

the Zoo is in Royal Oak, so that would be a really easy 'set' of things to do ... Zoo late morning/early afternoon ... then to Royal Oak for dinner and candids!

I need to jet down to Eastern Market one Saturday morning and see how 'hoppin' it is this time of year ... I think it would be worthwhile to shoot there ... great candid opportunities ... there are a few groups of guys that set up huge drum grills and cook chicken/ribs ... they've got a blues band that plays in the afternoon ... lots of abandoned buildings ... very close to Comerica Park, Ford Field and Greektown ... Hart Plaza and the Ren Cen are right there also .. the kicker is that downtown is mostly a ghost town on the weekends .. except for the Fox district if there's a sporting event ...

Lemme do some brainstorming and try to think of other neat places to shoot around here ... I'm exhausted and drawing a blank at the moment ...

oh yeah, forgot to post what a wonderful time I had yesterday .... can't wait to do it again ... might be a few days before I get my photos posted though ... we tore the carpet out of my office this morning so my computer is packed away until we paint .. thank goodness for my 'work laptop' ... unfortunately, no photoshop on this box ... be patient, I've got 4 gigs worth of images to sort through also!

Thank you all for posting about yesterday's happening. I apologize to all for not being there. I was so totally excited to go...bought new rechargeables, a couple more SD cards and, as noted before, worked on getting the 'Neon' in shape for the trip. Maybe if i had just left the doggone thing alone it woulda made it there and back without problems. Oh well!!

So glad to hear that you had a great time. Can't wait to see what kinda shots you came up with...not to mention hearing about all that went on. Hey... someone has got to live vicariously for me! i got no life! ;)

Ok, ya'll asked for it, so here's some pics! :-)

So, we all met up in front of the capitol
The building is supposed to be closed on the week-ends. Di tried the door, and it was open, so in she went. Of course, we all followed :-) The folks in there were real nice, they said they were in fact closed, but that we could go ahead up to the main floor and take some photos!
there were these kids lying on the floor!
Kaelva and Pam were tired, so they joined them :-)
Not really!!! :-P That's just the best way to view the dome
When we left, we circled round the area north of the capitol, and checked out some cool old churches
Then we walked up to Washington st., shooting stuff along the way
Heading down Washington Square, tummies were growling bigtime, so we stopped at Kewpees for olive burgers, shrooms, and chili cheese fries. It was a nice lunch!
And Di let me play with her Lens Baby!
After lunch, Di's friend had a special treat for us. He works at GM, so he took us all on GM property, to a lot that is right next to the north side of Winkin', Blinkin' 'n Nod! What a cool up close and personal visit!!!
That was way, way cool!!! Definitely the closest I'd ever been :-)
Then we headed over the river to Moores River Park, for the view that most people ever get to see
The park was fun. There were some people fishing, Di bribed one of them. She said if they let her take a picture, they would catch a fish. She took the picture, and moments later caught one! (I'll let one of the girls show ya those pics) There were some kids playing there [thumb]591005[/thumb] These girls hung with us for a few minutes by the water. They were pretty funny, and had lots of questions!
Then we headed up to Old Town for the Blues Fest. We had to walk over and check out Brenke Fish Ladder
We ate....aGAin! :-) Then it was time to check out some cool music
It was quite a day! I think everyone was getting a little tired (boy has this little guy grown since Frankenmuth!)
We all had long drives ahead of us (I had to go a good 4 miles or so myself!) It was a great, really fun day, I'm already looking forward to the next one! (You better be there Bob!) :-)

Gene ... those pics are awesome!!! I can't wait to get my computer back up and running so I can spend HOURS going through my shots and processing them!! Might have to set the puter up in the dining room as a temporary solution ...

Thanks again for being a part of my first DPC GTG ... hope we can do it again soon!!

Way to go Tater! Some outstanding shots! Gotta say that although I felt bad not being able to make it Saturday, NOW i feel like I may have missed out on the time of my life. Only time I have ever been to Lansing was in 6th grade I think. All I remember was that the Capitol is BIG. Oh, been there as a college kid but I don't really remember then either... uh... don't remember a whole lot from those years at all! :)

Thanks for the pictures. From the looks on the faces I can tell that I missed out on a wonderful experience. Maybe next time!!

Yeah, I was thinkin' 'bout ya when we went to that north side of Winkin' Blinkin' 'n Nod. I know you love shooting that place, and I don't think you ever got that view either.

Very nice shots Geno. That was cool that you were able to get into the Capitol Rotunda. Did you get some good shots at the Blues Fest?

haha no she didn't break in but i'm sure she was tempted :D

anyways i tried to get an assortment posted of photos here.. I didn't get a chance to edit them at all other than rotating and truthfully I didn't even look at them fullsized.. I had two minutes to grab a bunch and let them load away while I did my errands..

Another interesting idea for a GTG in Michigan is a trip around the thumb. I did this earlier this year and it was pretty cool.

I drove to Harbor Beach and then from there I drove around the thumb on 25 following the lakeshore and ended up in Caseville. I got some neat shots from it.

There are some great photo ops in Harbor Beach, Port Hope, Port Austin, and Caseville.

I would love that Bob. I was over there this summer and I didn't get a chance to explore much. It would be awesome to go.

These shots were taken on that trip.

My wife and I just moved to Northern MI. (Traverse City/Petoskey area) from the thumb area. It's absolutely beautiful up here too. Lots of hills that provide fantastic landscape shots, gorgeous sunsets, numerous harbors, lighthouses, nature preserves, etc. Not too much in the way of "urban" settings, although there are some very nice downtown shopping districts with unique architecture. We're also not too far from the Mackinac bridge, the third longest bridge in the world. Perhaps this could be another locale.
