deb, these are fascinating pics. it's bringing back all the classical history i studied. the tigris and euphrates, the gloden crescent, all that. i love looking through your desert collection. there's some wonderful stuff in there.

.

well, here's the beast with his shaved leg. they bored out his humerus and put in a rod the whole length, then put two screws in both top and bottom, to hold it stil. he can't go out except to pee and poo for the next 4 weeks, then can only go on very short walks for the following 8. we're all going to go insane.

I am so forgetful, that if I have a decent Free Study I enter it right away. Then if I get a better one I swap it. I was totally surprised last night when my FS shot popped up on my home page. Where did the summer go? How can it be Sept. already?

I'm not unhappy with FS score, considering it was a basic edited shot in an expert editing challenge. Also, I rarely do well in FS anyway.

Christian, not to rub salt in your wound, but that really is a fantastic image. I'd have given you an 8 or 9 for that. The upside? It's still a fantastic image. Enter it over at BetterPhoto.com. You can even keep your copyright on it over there.

I seriously wish that "baghead" comments weren't allowed - it's too easy to be snarky or rude when you're hidden.

For me, the shots you should not enter are the shots you yourself do not like, but that you enter hoping they will do well for some reason. Experimenting, trying new things, and ending up with an image that isn't everything you wanted but that you want to try before voters is okay. Entering stuff you just don't like doesn't really help.

So, if you like your FS shot, and wanted to try it, then forget the score. Turn it off if you need to, but ignore it in any event. And then see what comments you get, and what others (especially TSers) think of it after the challenge, as well (I don't always vote, and don't always comment when I do vote, so after comments are most likely from me right now).

My humble advice is, let it ride. If the score bugs you, then wait until after and ask us why we think it didn't do so well. Lots of good people here will tell you honestly what they think, and will also see the best in it, as well.

It's not all about the scores (though I myself forget this often enough, it's sunk in rather well as of late, and my images have been the better for it).

Best to all with images in!

Rob

P.S. My fill the frame entry, which has really, really grown on me this week the more I've looked at it, and which was "punishment" from the speed free study, is either going to be my fifth or fourth highest scoring image (currently sitting at 6.1776). So there!

Exciting times today, we put down a reservation for a new house!

If all goes to plan, we should be moving in in a couple of months. ooer

Congrats, mist! You and Snaffles can trade new home stories. :)

For anyone interested in the impressionism challenge, here's a short list of techniques I collected while reviewing high scores in the last version of this theme:
- shoot through glass with water on it
- shoot through glass with vaseline on it
- move the camera in the direction of prominent lines visible in the subject (e.g., parallel to the horizon)
- shoot into rippling water

Interestingly, none of the images I reviewed used PS filters to achieve the effect, which is refreshing.

Update on my life it still sucks :) NO not really there is lots worse. I'm going to have to get around the clock care for my mom, there is no way that I can do it myself, there are lots of good care givers here in town so that shouldn't be that hard. I was going to have back surgery next week, but the insurance denied it so now I have to appeal that. But this too shall pass. I'm going out today and take some pictures that will brighten my day. Mist and Snaffles welcome to the pride of ownership. It's great to have your own home.

Thanks Rob...I really liked the colors in my entry...unfortunately...I didn't look at the full size image on screen and the focus is off...which of course is sudden death in a FS...lol. Maybe I should get lazer eye surgery :)

Ditto on what Rob said.....though the sentiments have been spoken from one of us to another many times, that was a real pearl for accuracy and concise presentation.

As for your own critical eye......give yourself a break; it'll come with time. I know I have come so far since being here.......the help and support available through Team Suck is both wonderfully supportive and extraordinarily instructive. I am constantly amazed at how easy it is to look at my own work now and be both honest critically and yet accepting of a work that's decent even though it didn't turn out exactly as I'd planned.

A funny aside.......I'd been hyper-critical of some of the photography work that I'd done for my daughter;s cheerleading team. Then another parent put together a disc that had some shots from all of us on a slideshow and gave it to all the team. Although a nice gesture, and an act of selfless devotion for the time and effort required, some of the shots were soooooooo bad it was almost painful.

So ever since, I've been less critical of what I get for the team and have produced some truly good, not great, but good shots that people are just thrilled to see 'cause it's all about their kids' participation and not my photography skills, and the endless quest for betterment. It's all about perspective!

Your work shows that you have a natural flair and a good eye.....give it time!

Ok, I've been doing some reading about lighting recently (and portrait lighting in particular), and this is probably my best recent portrait attempt. I'd really appreciate some feedback on it if some of you fancy having a look.

Thanks for that, and I like to say, the only time I don't like to share my scores, if it looks like being my best, as it has jinxed my score a couple of time before. I liked to share my scores here, with regular updates, if and when they change.

Luckily Team Suck doesn't require me to some minimum number of entries each month, or I would have been left behind awhile ago. I had some great ideas for a demotivational poster, but could not get both time and camera to happen together. I'm hoping that tomorrow lends itself to some Bokeh opportunities though.

I agree, it should be fun to vote on. Love the desert shots Deb! Just haven't had time to do much commenting. I feel like a lurker, just quick looks at everything. I've been so busy with the new job and I still have to squeeze my grandmother in everyday (make her dinner every night, do her shopping, write her bills, etc.). Then I have to come home and do mine too!

You are a beautiful person Kelli, and it shows with the love you give to your Grandmother.
