I'll be there.
...but GeneralE wants to do the Sonoma County Fair on the 29th, and if he's still game, I'll meet him there, also. |

And, I'm up the hill from Chico in Paradise. I thought I'd seen some local sights in these challenges (besides mine, that is). I can do the 14th or 15th. Anyone want to carpool? This will be my first GTG, so not at all sure how to prepare. |

This sounds like a super GTG. Wish I could come. Here are a few notes on Pt. Reyes 'off the top of my head'. Others will probably add to the list of attractions.
At the Visitors Center there are several short trails and attractions. From memory here are a few:
The Miwok Village is an authentic re-creation and is used ceremonially today.
The Earthquake Trail – shows the effects of the 1906 earthquake including a fence on the boundary of the quake.
The Woodpecker Trail – through the woods seeing lots of trees showing woodpecker holes or caches of nuts. Other woodland and meadow scenes, panoramics. Horses, maybe.
My very favorite all-day trip to Pt. Reyes is to
Pierce Point Ranch You might stop at
Inverness ,
at the General Store to buy a bag lunch (messy, good sandwiches) and take Pierce Point Road off Sir Francis Drake Blvd.
On Pierce Point Road there are a couple of digressions:
.....1. A state fee beach, Hearts Desire, is pleasant. Two trails are fun to do.
.....2. Or stop at Abbot̢۪s Lagoon for a stroll to the ocean
This drive takes you along the spine of Tomales Point. At the end of Pierce Point Road, watch carefully
for Tule Elk
after you see the barrier that holds them in. It is almost a sure thing that you will see some of the herd. And several informal pull offs make it easy to photograph them if your lens cooperates. (This is great wildflower territory in the springtime) At the end of the road there is the Ranch that can be explored. Barns, sheds, fences, etc.are nicely restored.. Walk to the end of Tomales Point if you wish.
Or follow the road downhill to its absolute end a few yards away, and take the trail down to the Pacific. If it happens to be low tide, it̢۪s a bonanza. Rocks and scenery are good any time. It is a challenging hike.
If none of this attracts, there are additional treks.
Limantour Beach
Drakes Bay
North and South Beaches
Chimney Rock
The Lighthouse.

I'm sorry we'll miss you, Michele. I was hoping Point Reyes would be far enough north for you and others, so it's too bad that the date won't work out.
Alice, I thought your seminar was on the 14th. If you happen to be free on the 15th, I hope you can make it. Regardless, thanks so much for all the great suggestions on where to go in Point Reyes.
And I've been remiss in not welcoming Jennifer to the west coast. I moved out here from New Orleans, so just let me know if you need any help with the culture shock. ;-)

Thanks Philip! I'm actually from California originally. I've finally recoverd from the culture shock of the South and now we're leaving. Isn't that how it always goes though. :) I'm really looking forward to getting back that way. |

Yes, we're having the reception at the Gallery (A Woman's Eye Gallery) on the 14th for the watercolor painter but the festivities will likely go on all weekend. If I can sneak out the door, you bet I'll be at the GTG. |

Mark has kindly informed me of this thread - I would love to join you all in Point Reyes! - but July 15 is my mother's birthday, and I'll be spending the day with her. Maybe next time - and I know there will be tons of great pictures to mark the occasion!

Just saw this thread. I'll be heading out to Cali to visit my daughter who lives in the area. I'd really enjoy joining up with you if we make it over that weekend. I've been dying to see that area, and Muir Woods is one of my favorites.

I am maybe 50% for Pt. Reyes if it's on Sunday, and I won't be taking any long hikes. It'll be disappointing to not walk down to the lighthouse. : ( |

Heh, heh. Yes, THAT stroll down the stairs is only the equivalent of the Empire State Bldg. Anyone can do that one. (It's the getting back up...)

They Light the lighthouse the first and third Saturday of the month -- reservations required.

There's an excellent viewpoint of the light house from the top of those 308 stairs. It's a nice vantage point to take pictures of the light house and the backs of all the people who are walking down to it.
It would be great to see you if you're out here then, Rebecca! Please just check this thread for more details as we get closer. Hope to see you then.
And Damon, I'm sure your mom would love to spend her birthday with you and your photography friends in Point Reyes. Bring her along! ;-)

Things just improved at work. It looks like I'm going to be able to get away during July. We're working on the weekend of July 15. I'll keep posted.
I'd even be delighted to walk those stairs, as long as the temp isn't horendous. |

I'll gladly take those kinds of temperatures. We've been up near 100 and sticking there.
What part of Sonoma County are you in? I'll be in Rohnert Park. |

I live about 3 miles west of R.P. and about 8 miles from the ocean, and it's about 10 degrees hotter here than on the coast. It's also possible to be in the 90's inland during July, which makes the coast an even better destination. |

Hey, just out of curiousity...Do we get to wear those "Hello, My Name is..." nametags? :D
I suck with name and faces and I know it sound like a dorky thing to do, but if we all wore them with our usernames and real names on them, I think it would be better than calling everyone, "Hey, YOU!"
just a thought :)

Name tags might not be a bad idea. On the way to one GTG, I walked up to a guy with nice Canon equipment and asked him if he was DPC and he looked at me funny.
If we stick with Pt. Reyes National Seashore, the Visitors Center is an easy place to meet up and any congregration of cameras would be easily noticed.
But darn, I'm still pretty sure I won't be able to be there. I'm still hoping. |

So I have been to Point Reyes a few times. I went to Mclure's Beach which is where I took these shots. and . It has lots of cool rocks going out into the ocean and on the shore. Lots of photo opportunities. The downside is that it is very far even from the Visitor's center it is about 35-45 min at the end of Pierce Point Road. Once there there is a 20 min downhill hike to the beach, not too hard but should be noted.
mpeters and I just went to Sculpture Beach, it was a very foggy but had some great seascapes and rock formations. The easiest way I think to get there is from Limantour Beach, which is a long Sandy Beach, near the parking Lot is a marsh that could also be nice for photos. You would have to walk South down the Beach for about 30 min or so without stopping for photos(not likely :P) On the way is also a little creek coming down and into the ocean. Here are some pics on the way there.
I went to the Lighthouse once, it was closed(Wednesday is always closed) and there was 70 mph winds. From what I can remember the best photo other than walking to the lighthouse is the shot of South Beach which someone posted in this thread, i think it is about as far as Mclure's Beach, just a different direction.
The other beach I thought would suit the needs of most since It has a cafe I think and easy close parking right to the ocean is Drakes Beach. It look to have lots to shoot and the beach is accesible to all.
BTW here is a park map in .pdf to get an idea of where everything is.
linky
These are just some ideas I thought I would share :)
It was long post, there were mistakes ;p
