Thanks to everyone who volunteered to be a part of this project. The volunteers are as follows:
jimmythefish (James Davison) muckpond (Rob Elliott) azrifel (Sander Admiraal) Gordon (Gordon McGregor) Patella (Jeff Niekamp) stephan (Stephan Uhlmann) jimmsp (Jim Burkstrand) Gracious (Grayce Dillon) inspzil (Bob Broadbent) zadore (Phil L.) BigSmiles (Carolle) sulamk (Sandy Mckenna) Konador (Ben Roberts) Kavey (Kavita F.) lionelm (Lionel Marechal) andrewm (Andrew Majoribanks) jmsetzler (John Setzler) KarenBryan (Karen Bryan) Justine (Justine Olson) Alecia (Alecia Mitchell) myquil (Mike Clark) emorgan49 (Ellen Morgan) Natasha (Natasha Mitsuhashi) Shutterfly (Wendy Slocum) Karmat (Karma Shuford)
To begin this project, I would like for everyone to do a test critique. I think Gordon's guidelines are a great resource for performing this exercise. Here they are from the previous thread:
*****************************************
Here is something I scribbled down as some guidelines - all edits/ changes very welcome: (Some of this taken from other guidelines)
Making A Critique
A critique is a written evaluation of a photograph. It shouldn't just say 'I like/don't like this picture'. Here are some suggested aspects to consider and comment on in your critique
(1) COMPOSITION -CONTENT - This is what the photograph is saying. What is the Center of Interest in the photograph? Where does your eye come to rest in viewing the photo? If there is more than one focus point does that add to the photographs interest or distract from it? Where was the Center of Interest placed within the frame of the photo? Did they use the rule of thirds? Did it improve anything ? What other eye control elements are in the photo (leading lines, contrast, diagonal lines, etc). Did the photographer get close enough to the subject to include only what is important? In other words, are there wasted parts of the frame that contain items not adding to the message of the photo? How is colour used ? Does it add or detract from the main point of the picture. Black and white or monochrome can be used to enhance texture or shape relationships in a picture that additional colours can hide.
(2) BACKGROUND - How did the photographer use the tools of selective focus or depth of field to deal with the background? Is the background simplified, included or a solid or is it nonexistent? How does the background add or distract from the message of the photo?
(3) CAMERA WORK -TECHNICAL - Exposure and focus begin in the camera. Is the subject sharp and clearly in focus? Are part of the photo that need to be clearly focused out of focus? Exposure is observed in the details of the shadow area. A properly exposed photo will have some texture in the shadows. Is the photo exposed properly and give some evidence of what you see? Is there detail visible in the brightest parts of the print? If there are areas of the picture that lack detail or are very contrasty is that good or bad?
(4) DIGITAL PROCESSING - TECHNICAL - Has the image been processed correctly ? Is the white balance correctly compensated for, or does the picture suffer from a colour cast ? (E.g., yellow indoor pictures from domestic lighting) Has the picture been correctly sharpened ? Does the image have JPEG artefacts or other evidence of poor technical processing ?
(5) YOUR OPINION ON THE PHOTO - What do you like about the subject? Is it an emotional shot, a story, a statement, a humorous photo, or what? Is there anything about the photograph that you would do differently if you were the photographer and had the chance to do the same shot?
******************************************
This is just a guideline that will help you make a useful and in-depth critique. Please apply it as you see fit.
Please critique the photo that is linked to your name:
zadore jimmythefish azrifel gordon patella stephan jimmsp gracious inspzil bigsmiles sulamk konador kavey lionelm andrewm muckpond karenbryan alecia justine myquil emorgan49 natasha shutterfly karmat jmsetzler
After these critiques are complete, we will take a look at all of them and see what the group thinks about them.
Suggestions:
Keep the challenge topic in mind since we are dealing with challenges.
Don't hesitate to say what you 'feel' about a photo. Take a look at the camera equipment and settings as well as the description information.
Good luck :)

Done. I did my best not to do 'tto much for nothing' and jeeping in mind I will have to do between 10 to 20. I use the guidelines a little, not too much. Thanks for putting this up John. I am a little 'scared' by people 'shooting' (even kindly) on my comments. I am a little 'uncomfortable' with the idea of people looking at my critique ... Remember the goal is to comment a picture .. not to .. comment the comments too much. Comments apreaciated .. but it is kind of the extent of my knowledge and of my style !
Long life to this idea !!

Lionel, I think you did fine :) I don't think it's really necessary to 'score' the photo on a 1-10 scale though, but that is completely up to you as the reviewer :)

I wish you would've picked any other shot for me to critique!! But I did it. Carsten is a very good photographer, but I do not like this shot. Anyway, I'm done. I structured it to Gordons guidelines to see how it worked, and I think that it will work well for me. Is this remotely what you were looking for? |

Is there a deadline? I can't load pictures from links like that at home. It just takes me to a blank page, always happens here in Flintstones land. I have to wait till I get to work. |

I finished mine although I screwed up by not running the spell checker before I hit submit :( Not sure how much is wrong but if past spell-checks are any indication, it may not be legible :)
By the way John, I spell my name with a 'y' instead of a 'ui' :) Nearly everyone that knows how to type has a real hard time with it since fingers are trained to go to the u after the q :) I just do it to be annoying :) |

Just for you info guys .. I read a few that people entered ...and I think we are on the good tracks ... Looking at the picture and the comments .. I thought my self .. sometimes 'oh yes he/she is right' (and that would help to improve my own picture) and sometimes "I do not agree totally with that". But I do think that if I had get something like that on every picture I submited .. I would have liked it !!!!!!! Lionel |

I'm not a critiquer, and I don't play one on T.V. :-), but I do have a picture in the test list to be critiqued. So, my question is what criteria did you use to choose the initial list? I just so happen would love to have an in depth critique of this particular photo as it didn't score as highly as I thought it would.

Done! Hope its Ok, at times I felt myself disagreeing with some of the other critiques and had to make sure I used "in my opinion" enough. Just like any other critique, although trying to be fair, they are still biased! |

i think we all have the same fears. But .. when you think about it, we are trying to do our best, we are trying to give our opinion and being fair.
So ...as lkong as people are not expecting a 'judge/guru/master' comment .... I think the result is beneficial

I think they selected every 25th photo froma couple of challenges.
Reviewers: You're all doing a fine job so far! You have different styles, but all of your comments seem reasonable, fair, and pertinent. My guess is you'll learn as much from this activity as anything you do here. Thanks for your efforts. |

Done. It's interesting that the average score on this photo was about the same as my individual score. I would also guess by the time it took for me on this one, that I would be able to complete 3-4 per night, meaning 3-4 nights to complete the project every week.
