To milk the cows you have to go to Tillimook... which is about 90 miles west of Portland. A long way just to milk a few cows. :D
There are any number of places open at the Troutdale exit, which is just west across the Sandy River on I84 which is about 6 to 10 miles or so west of the Corbitt exit. The Troutdale exit use to have the cheapest gas in Oregon at the Conoco. I don't know if it's still the cheapest as I wasn't able to see the sign when I went by a couple of weeks ago. The line was always a pain and you had to pay indoors, even with a debit card. But there are a lot of fast food joints at that exit. Cascade Locks might have something open although I don't recall any fast food joints. There is a great cafe there for lunch though... the last time I was with about 25 other photographers we invaded the place for lunch. They were short handed too but were game to get us all fed. LOL! I can't remember the name, but there isn't a lot in Cascade Locks. It's on the right side as you are driving east through town. And if you make it towards Hood River, there is the Char Burger. They have great burgers and pie. They are right next to the Gorge Hotel. If you go right (opposite direction than towardsthe Gorge Hotel) at that exit there is a Wal-Mart and some fast food places a mile down the road. Hood River is another 5 miles east of there.

That is one thing I have to remember when I go south across the border...can't pump your own gas. Mental note to self as I have been in trouble before for trying to do that in ya'alls neck of the woods...
Would like the great cafe for lunch that you mention as I am a carb junky major, short handed be damned :-)

I don't think they're open that early for coffee, but a place that I can't go down the gorge without hitting is the East Wind Drive-In in Cascade Locks. (The little orange shack on the north side of the road next to the park.)
Best milkshakes known to man (usually). They're kind of a spendy place, though. |

OK... Here are a couple maps of the area to show folks where things in the west Gorge are located...
The first one shows where Ainsworth, Benson and many of the waterfalls we'd be interested in are located in relationship to each other. All milage is measured from Multnomah Falls so you have to interpret a bit.
PDF from Corbett exit to Dobson (west segment of Historic Columbia River Highway):
//www.columbiariverhighway.com/historic_columbia_river_highway.pdf
and a prettier, really lousy one from the State of Oregon but with a wider general view:
//www.byways.org/explore/byways/2141/travel.html
DrAchoo's suggestion using the Corbett exit is best but if it is closed as was said earlier then to get to The Women's Forum Overlook there are two choices:
1-Coming west from Ainsworth
Take Exit 28 to Bridal Veil Falls. Drive west about 6.5 miles on the Historic Highway. It is about 1 mile past Crown Point and on the right side of the road when driving west. The Overlook pullout is well marked.
2-Going east from Portland and surrounding areas
Take the Troutdale Exit (18, I believe). (You could get your Starbucks near there if only they were open at 4:30am. LOL!!!) Drive east on highway 30, the Historic Columbia River highway, probably about 12-13 miles through Corbett to the overlook. It will be on the left side of the road when driving eastward. You could also go to Exit 28 and backtrack using the first set of directions.
Note:
Interstate 84 and the historic highway parallel each other through the gorge, but even though they are quite close to each other much of the way there are very few access points from one to the other.
For example, at the Multnomah Falls exit on I-84 you park practically right next to the falls and only have to walk 50 yards (meters) to it from the parking lot. Yet even though you have to cross the the old highway to get to the falls you still can't drive onto the old highway from that exit.

jbsmithana,
My wife will be with me -- so that's one more for your list.
(That's kind of fun saying that -- we were married in March, and now "my wife" will be joining us Hah!)
Oh and Jeeps (the dog) will be with us too.
What's all this talk all of a sudden about 5:00am?! I thought *I* was crazy to hit Oneonta Gorge at 7:30. (Let's see... A person should be able to make both if I.. er.. . if *they* don't stand around and gab after the sunrise. :) ) See you all on Saturday.

You can do both... you'll have plenty of time for sunrise(about 5:15) at the Women's Forum Overlook and Oneonta Gorge at 7:30 and probably have a quick waterfall stop or two in between.
You and DrAchoo could still do the Oneonta hike together you talked about if you want. You'll want to discuss that with him. He is gonna try to make sunrise as well and so is Ursula, Sheryll, Agaricus, fas-ligand and possibly others.

I think if I went up the gorge I'd be the only one and that would defeat the whole purpose...

You had best be careful at the edge of the overlook...

DrAchoo,
I've been contemplating throwing the dry suit and dry bag in to wade up the gorge to the falls. The suit may be a bit of an overkill, but I'm a little short skinny guy that gets cold when submerged in water beyond the knees. (My wife and dog will probably need to wait either in the car or before the wading gets too deep).
I'm planning on doing the gorge though.

Would that be DIR photography? :D
I would do the Oneonta hike with you if Becky weren̢۪t going. However, she is so I won't.

Mick,
I've read and re-read the manual... I can't seem to find any mention of the proper DIR configuration for water-filled slot-canyon waterfall photography. hmph.
However, Linda isn't going to be wading -- if you *really* want to come, perhaps Linda and Becky could hang together while we carry out this bit of photographic foolishness. Just a thought.
Otherwise, we'll see you at 10:00 at Benson.

My wife has indicated that she'll probably be coming along with her P&S, but that may change when I try and wake her up Saturday morning. ;) |

Well, I'm pretty sure the dry suit has to be black, or else you'll die. I'm not sure about the rest though. I guess you'll have to get in touch with JJ about that.

There you go, trying to screw up a perfectly good excuse. :D
You're going to start out at 7:30, right? If we make it up there early (might happen), then I may take you up on that. Or maybe I'll just keep Linda and Becky company. We wouldn't want the girls getting into any trouble.

OK - looks like 21 for dogs / sausages. I'm leaving in the morning but will check this when I get down there Friday night to make sure there are no more hungry mouths to feed.

In order to make sunrise I'll have to leave around 2:40AM to meet fas-ligand by 3:30AM and get to the Overlook by 5 barely in time for sunrise panoramas. That is getting started pretty early but AM light is what is best.
We are looking to bug out around 1PM. That will be plenty long enough for us to harrass everyone and the "fas" has got an obligation at 5 he needs to return for.
Looking forward to meeting everyone. :)
