So I went to the store and played with lenses. I was looking for a nice wide lens. I saw this one in the case
Tokina 12-24mm f/4.0

It was about 450USD. However, he quickly put this lens, the Tokina 20-35/2.8 on the D80 body. It was very nice, and about 200USD more expensive. I asked to try out the first one, but he was quick to point out that the lens in the case was for a Canon and suggested that it was worth checking out. He told me that if I have the kit lens that came with my D80, that it would be about the same as far as width. Is this guy full of it?

I think the kit lens for the D80 is the 18-135mm DX lens. That is already wider than the Tokina 20-35/2.8, except for the large aperture. The Tokina 12-24mm/4.0 would be a better choice.

better still look for the sigma 10-20mmm - that is even wider and by all accounts a better lens. More expensive, but i would think it would be worth it in the long run - its the wide angle i am planning to buy after a while of researching them.

I have a 2.8 15mm Sigma fisheye I could give you a good deal on (less than any of these) - However, of the mentioned lenses, I have heard good things of the Tokina 12-24 and Sigma 10-20.
Let me know if you're interested in the 15mm fishey.

I have the 10-20mm Sigma, and it is one of my most used and loved lenses. I think 10mm is a world apart from 20 mm which just is not wide enough for me, especially on my D200. The 20-35 2.8 would be a nice lens, but the bit that you are missing (10-20) is the bit that makes super wide angle lenses awesome.

all were at 10mm.

The Tokina 12-24 has a good reputation, but I LOVE the Sigma. It is sharp and contrasty. Highly recommended. Steer away from the 20-35. If you get anything in that range, the 17-50 2.8 by Tamron or Sigma are reputed to be awesome as well but with a more useful range.

very good and diverse selection of wide-angle shots, Enzo! Thanks for sharing!

I recently got a 12-24mm Tokina and love it. Don't have yet many examples in my DPC portfolio, here is one

Sigma 10-20 is fun, I love mine:

... you can even bug your monther-in-law with it.

I agree with the crowd: once you see how wide 10-12mm is on your cam, you won't be happy if you have to settle for 20mm on the wide end.

The lens I got with mine was the Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-70mm.

OK...gotta do some more research. I have time to save up for it.

Thanks for the offer, but I'm not sure I would get much use out of a fisheye lens. Just out of curiosity, how much would it be? If my wife lets me and the price is right, I might be allowed to.

thats the correct one that most people use... in fact I'm going for one of these in the very near future also. Apparently both the sigma 10-20mm and tokina 12-24 are excellent lenses, with similar overall image quality. I'm purely going for the sigma because all things the same, i'd rather have an extra 2mm on the wide end, than have a larger aperture. 90% of the time it'll be used as a landscape lens, where your stopping down anyway

In short, yeah, the guy's full of it.

20-35 f/2.8 is a seriously nice lens... for a full frame body...

It's the equivalent of a 30-50mm f/2.8 on a D80. Sure it's nice, but as mentioned before, the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 is going to be a better choice with a better range (equivalent of 24-75 on a D80).

The Tokina is sweet, cheaper and often spoken of as highly as the Nikon variant. Going wider even by a mere 2mm will make a significant difference. As you get near the really wide end of things, each mm makes progressively more and more difference.

The 2mm difference between 10mm and 12mm is VASTLY different from the 2mm different between a 28 and a 30mm and to carry this even further, not even remotely significant if you were looking at - for example - a 600mm lens vs a 602mm lens...

The guy in the store was full of it regarding the 12-24 being equivalent to the kit lens. The Tokina 12-24mm is a great lens for wide angle on the D70, D80 and other non-full frame Nikons and Canons. A lot of really nice photos on this site were taken with this lens (as others have said and shown you). I have also heard really good things about the Sigma 10-20mm but haven't tried it myself.

The Tokina is my most used lens - has done the best for me in challenges and is nice and sharp, built like a tank, and available for Nikon or Canon.

OK...I know people like the Sigma, but according to this article, it seems Tokina is the way to go. I'm still new and don't know what sites are good or bad for reviews, but he seems to be pretty straight with his comments.

Any comments on the This Article?

The article starts out with a punch!

"Get the Nikon" nothing else even comes close.

Actually, the article by Ken Rockwell sited below does not say that. It says that the Nikon is a little better than the Tokina, but if Ken didn't have a 1000 bucks for a lens, he would have bought the Tokina instead of the Nikon.

hmm - I'll keep my money in my pocket....

Ken's a putz. You need to read him selectively if you bother to read him at all. IMO.

I have played with both and the Nikon is a far better lens. Depending on what your doing with the images might make more of a difference. Let's say, very large printing as opposed to internet play.

The Tokina is a world class lens for the price, no doubt. Well, well, worth the money.

A few Nikon samples of mine...

It's all very dependant on what you like to photograph.

I know people that walk around with a 70-300mm lens because they love to photograph birds or sports. Most people will walk around with something like a 17-50, or a 24-70. I myself love my Tokina 12-24 because wide angle is just my thing.

Applied to your situation, either buy something wide-angle (like the tokina, it rocks) or buy something more general, like the tamron 17-50.

The 20-35 isn't the best of both worlds... it's rather none of both worlds. You might as well buy a 24mm or 28mm prime instead of that.

I saw you've got the kitlens now, a 18-70. What's the focal length you use most? If you use the 18mm a lot, I'd go for the tokina. It's a great addition to what you have. If you hardly ever use 18mm, don't bother with the Tokina 12-24. Get a replacement for your current lens like the tamron 17-50

And this is a *GREAT* site to compair lenses.
